Title: Metallica
Post by: Dante on September 13, 2008, 08:03:07 PM
Anyone bought the new CD yet? It's called Death Magnetic. I just got it today, and I love it! Definitely better than St. Anger by a LONG shot.

What do you guys think of the CD? Or about Metallica in general?

The second sequel to 'The Unforgiven' (Black Album '91), The Unforgiven III, was shown on this album. It's quite a bit different from the first two, but still really good. This song ends The Unforgiven Trilogy, and it ends it well. Has anyone ever heard any of these songs?

I've got the album, I think it's great the best thing since the black album. I love that the guitar solos are back and the progressive element has also returned that made them pioneers of prog metal. It sounds sort of like if they did an album between ...And Justice For All and the black album.
Metallica are one of my all time favorite bands and it's so great to see them return to form. I saw them last year at Wembly Stadium and they were fantastic!

Lucky. I've always wanted to go to one of their concerts. How much were the tickets?

Lucky for you, they are going out on  tour to support the new record.  Count on at least $60 a ticket to sit in the back of a huge sports complex, $150-200 up close, they need the money after all, Lars ain't rich enough yet.

That's quite a bit of money.  :'(

What is your favorite song from the album? Mine's The Unforgiven III (if you couldn't already tell that my all-time favorite song is The Unforgiven from my username). It was a bit different from the first two, but good. And the piano at the beginning was beautiful. I didn't think it would fit when played with the other songs because of their classic intro, but when I play them together, it is too perfect to give you the feeling of regret and remorse. *Tears of joy* :icon_tears: Those songs always make me emotional. They're my poison.  ;D Can't get enough...  :icon_bong:

If you forced me, and you would almost have to, I would take the 80s releases.  Kill 'Em All, And Justice For All, and Master of Puppets.  The newer stuff, St. Anger and the new one does not have the savage edge that they had back then, which is not odd, its a lot harder to muster up all that angst and anger when you're old and very, very rich then when you are struggling to make it and are much younger.

As for the live shows, give me the old Alcoholica any day.  I'm sure their clean and sober lifestyle is better for them and their loved ones, but it really hurt the stage show.

And they should have sued themselves up one side and down the other to keep anyone from ever seeing Some Kind of Monster.  Whatever respect I might have had for them, went out the window after watching that.

Hmm... I agree that the older albums are better. I took a liking to Black, ...And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, and Ride The Lightning. Nice old sound. But the new ones are good too. (Not St. Anger) But in a different way. The old ones give me a different feeling than the new ones; I guess it just depends on my mood. But nothing beats listening to an older track after having listened to the new ones for a long time. Almost brings tears to your eyes.

So what is your all-time favorite Metallica song? You already know mine.

when I saw them at Wembly I think it cost around £50, brilliant show. From the new album my avorite track is probably The Judas Kiss. My favorite Metallica album is either Ride The Lightning or ...And Justice For All. My favorite song is Fade To Black.

I always liked "Fade to Black" but in concert the standout has always been "Master of Puppets"

so, obey your tekla!

From the new album my favorite track is probably The Judas Kiss. My favorite song is Fade To Black.

I have to agree. Besides The Unforgiven III (It kinda shadows everything else), this is probably the best song.

Here's my breakdown of the songs and what I liked:

1. That Was Just Your Life
This song's heartbeat beginning is cool, and I like the main verse. (lyrics)
2. The End Of The Line
I loved this part of the song that came in the middle of the solo: 'Drop the hourglass of time, spilling sand we will not find. As we gather here today, we bid farewell, the slave becomes the master.' As well as the main verse. (lyrics)
3. Broken, Beat & Scarred
I like the main verse of this song. (Lyrics)
4. The Day That Never Comes
Good sound overall, has a different feel than the others. The main verse is pretty good, and the lyrics overall aren't bad. Good theme.
5. All Nightmare Long
Also a different sound, kinda a cool theme & lyrics. Main verse is good.
6. Cyanide
Although probably my least favorite song of the album, it's still pretty good. I love this part during the solo: 'Say is that rain or are they tears, that stained your concrete face for years? The crying, weeping, shedding strife. Year after year, life after life.'
7. The Unforgiven III
Do I really need to explain this one? Favorite song, and excellent ending to the trilogy. The words are more metaphorical than the first two. (Although the second one had a good handful of them too)
8. The Judas Kiss
Probably my favorite song on the album (Excluding The Unforgiven III, because with it there, the others don't have a chance). Lyrics are strange but cool.
9. Suicide & Redemption
I haven't listened to this much, because I'm not a huge fan of instrumentals (The Call Of Ktulu is awesome though), but from what I heard the first time through, it wasn't bad.
10. My Apocalypse
Pretty good lyrics, not bad sound. But I have to say, one part of the solo was totally awesome: it's about in the middle, it's a guitar played to make it sound like it's going around the back of your head. (It starts at about 1:50 [3:10 left] and ends about 1:56 [3:04 left] if you guys feel like finding it.) It really threw me for a loop the first time I heard it, but man was it cool!

Anyway, that's my opinion.

My favorite song is Fade To Black.

I like that one too. It has some of the same bits used in The Unforgiven. I can't really catch the resemblance as much now, though, after hearing it so much. But it used to be really obvious.

I ought to start a contest.  I have a shirt from the rehearsal  sessions for the St. Anger Tour.  They did four nights at the Fillmore, (max Capacity 1000, I think they held it to 800+ their friends, family, and entourage - which is huge) and I have a shirt from one of the four nights.  Night 3 to be exact. There were 500 shirts made for each night.  It has the St. Anger logo on the front, and some creepy face on the back, and the date and venue - and it says METALLICA in big letters) If you can give me a damn good reason why you should be wearing that shirt (and are willing to pay postage for it), I'll send it to you.

So, what would make a good contest for that?

My brother bought the album. I think it's alright but not a lot compared to their older music.

Master of puppets I'm pulling your strings!1 *dances crappily to the song* ;D

I get the distinct impression Tekla is an old school Metallica fan. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vvdrienerlo.nl%2Fsmileys%2Fheadbang.gif&hash=39a71c8227b2d0c23128883d0049718475ced5d4)

I'm an old school everyone fan.  Though, as general rule, pop bands tend to get worse in their career, not better.

Haven't heard the new stuff yet but I did enjoy them a lot in the 90s. I usually get flamed by fans for "Load" being my favorite album of theirs.

Every band, if they exist long enough will do two records.  One, a very popular deal, that when examined is not really that good, and one that sank without a trace that in fact, is very good - though often very different.  So perhaps that CD is your sort of 'lost metallica disc.'

I'm somewhat handicapped by having watched them (and a lot of bands you don't like so much too) from the start as they were local, before they were stars, which was before they were international superstars, which was before they were icons.  Bands, and I don't care if its Metallica or the Dead, are much better when they are just bands, and almost horrible when they become icons.

And the reason for that is, I think, that in the beginning all they are is original.  Back in the early 80s no other band sounded like Metallica in the least little bit.  You knew it was them from note one.  Like before that horrible 'jam band' deal only the Dead dared to play like that.  By the time you become an icon, well... you get to be an icon because what once was original, is now being done by a million people.  Where before if you liked Metallica, that Metallica SOUND deal, you had to go to Metallica because only they offered it.  Now, if you like that SOUND, I got a thousand other bands you might like.  All with one or more of the elements of that SOUND.

And now, as an ICON, who launched a thousand other bands (some of whom are almost better at doing Metallica then they are, or at least are young enough to still play it real strong and real full of passion) the one thing they can't do is mess with the SOUND (that's why they are icons) so they mess with everything else in the big stadium show and it all gets lost.  When you're in a place where you have 17 semis and 1/4 of one of those semis has actual band gear, amps and guitars and drums and all that - and the other 16 3/4 semis are full of other things, well, its not the music that matters in the same way anymore.

So, its not just 'old school' its that I pretty much lose interest when a band gets beyond a place I'm willing to go to watch them, and my cut-off is about 8,000.  And even then, you better be Bob Dylan.  I really lose interest once they get beyond playing for 2000 people a night, I think that's where the cutoff between playing and production begins to weigh too much in favor of production and I just kind of like the playing myself.

Metallica is a really great band, I freakin love Kirk, and and although I havent heard the new abulm yet, I do like the song The Day that Never Comes, and favorite song of all time by them would have to be...Eye of the beholder! or to Live is to Die..., even So What although its a cover song.

Metallica is awesome. I just started listening to them again. When I was growing up, Metallica was what I listened to and Mortal Kombat is what I played so whenever I play the game or listen to Metallica I'll think of the other. Yep...Brings back memories. My brother got Death Magnetic and it's alright. I'm an old school Metallica fan though

my fist concert was when i was 11 years old, and my uncle took me to see them at the arena in Sacramento Ca, it was the first and best group I have seen in all the times I have went to see a band play. Justice For All tour was it for me. I saw Slayer and Quiet Riot play later that year but Metallica did it on stage and music wise.
all of there other album,s from JUSTICE FOR ALL,MATHER OF PUPPETS,KILL'EM ALL,RIDE THE LIGHTNING, THE BLACK ALBUM AND DEATH MAGNETIC, are far the best of all of them thay have put out.But the they are all ok, just those i listed are great. Dave Mustang of Megadeath Helped start Metallica, and Megadeath is good too, try them out.And one more for the road is Pantera WALK is awsome. But now im into alot of Manson,Craddle Of Filth,Zombie, and so on but Metallica is my Fav,,,,,,

A) I'll agree that And Justice For All... was pretty much the peak of their performance career

B) We'll have to differ on Megadeath, the best part of that band are not DM.  Though watching him snivel like a little schoolgirl in the movie Some Kind of Monster is about the funniest moment ever caught on film.

C) my offer still stands.  I have a limited ed. shirt from the St. Anger tour warm up shows at the Fillmore, one of 500.  Let me know who wants it.

Everything you said there is wrong. Dave Mustaine is a god of heavy metal and is a far better musician than anyone in Metallica (I love Metallica, so don't think that I don't) If you disagree then you probably haven't listened to them enough (I can tell this is probably true as you misspelled their name), just listen to the Rust In Peace album, from the first track you can hear his greatness as a player and a song writer.

And Somekind Of Monster wasn't exactly Metallica's most dignified moment, Lars behaves like a two year old and on the bit with Dave Mustaine, Lars cried too but that bit was editted out.
