Are you this guy? Do you know anyone like this guy? Here at pocketnow.com, we most definitely do! The guys here are just crazy about the latest hi-tech gadgets and mobile devices. And there certainly isn't anything wrong with that. Just like the sleek muscle cars, the HD televisions and the brawny power tools, handheld devices come in all new futuristic shapes and sizes, complete with every impossible spec known to man. In summary, these super high tech mobile devices continue to redefine the word "COOL" with their sleek interfaces and hardware designs, sick apps, blazing speeds and mind-blowing capabilities. So, what's not to love? Well, we know all you guys out there certainly enjoy your newest toys. But lost somewhere along the hoopla, a very interesting statistically proven fact comes to mind. Women just don't seem to care much about these things. Hmm...

It seems to me that it not a gender thing but more of an image thing. I see many women with I-pod or phones in their ears all the time. Older people do not need these hi-tech gadgets and they have no need for image. The like to hear the birds sing and the leaves rustle.

Women like gadgets with a social component,
that's why they're so heavily into cell phones,
way more than men if you ask me.

Though men may want their cells to be super PDA's
while girls may like it better if its a video-phone,
or then can send photos easily, regardless
of the fact that this photo is not top quality.

The guy will want his cell phone to have 4 MP
even if he uses it occasionally, just for
bragging rights, while the girl will use it more
but won't care as much about the number of pixels.

Its the attachment to details that make guys different, they'll
wax poetic about the horsepower of their car while the
girl just will find it cool the car accelerates fast. To brag you've
got to use numbers, that's a guy thing

This was one of the first things to tip me off to my real gender (not really :P) - I like it when tech just works and I don't have to tinker with it.  It's awesome when I can use a gadget straight out of the box.  No guy geek I know is like that.  For them, it's all about tweaking and tuning, raw performance data, calculations, benchmarks, power.  For me, it's about whether the thing is fun and useful, or not.

Totally opposite to me :). I open a new toy and first thing I do is read the manual before I've even looked at the toy. Then I play with the toy, manual in hand, trying to tweak it to what I want. "Some assembly required" is one of the most beautiful sentences in the English language.

And that's why we love Dennis.  I'm a big fan of the manual myself.  Though I don't think its a strict gender deal, or if it breaks down upon those lines, its more along the questions and issues of usage than complexity as Keira has noted.

I also think that males might tend more to rearranging their life for the gadget, where females would seek a gadget that works with their life.  That's at least the thinking as to why females were such strong and early adopters of laptop computers.  It moved with them, as opposed to the desk tops that one sat down with an pretty much had to pay obeisence to.  It didn't take its own furniture or have its own footprint in the house (much less its own room like computers sometimes and cars always).  It moved with them.  You didn't have to go through some kow-tow to fire it up or shut it down - you opened it, it was on, you closed it, it was off.  There do seem to be males that enjoy the complexity of the set up as much as the toy - which explains the lust for Harley's in a world with much better built bikes.

But in the end I know just as many women with laptops, MP3 Players, Dick Tracy Cell Phones, exotic metal frame bikes and all the other techno stuff.  They like their autos also.  Yes they tend to prefer huge SUVs to tiny sports cars, but they have been known to fall prey to the latter on occasion, just like some guys like SUVs even if they are woman's cars.

*Loves gagets more then any girl she knows*

But... stuff tends to bore me if there is no socialising involved...

Not all the time, though! I love challengeing video games. :)

Hey, what's wrong with my car having 240HP and my bike having a 12 second quarter mile (which is faster than any car on the road except newer Corvettes and the Italian makes like Ferarri.) I can't help that I have a 3Ghz Athlon X264 with 4GB of RAM...honest! :P

I tend to end up somewhere in the middle. Certain things, like my vehicles and my computers, I know a lot of the details about (I actually build my own PCs). Certain other things, like my camera and cell phone, I don't, mostly because I only care that they work.

I actually hate cell phones that do "everything but cook dinner". It's a *phone*. You talk to people on it, not take pictures, listen to music or play games. It's a *phone*. I use computers and cameras for the rest. That's why they exist. I've taken exactly one picture with my cell phone - to replace the ugly default backgrounds it came with.

As for manuals, they're what you read when you can't figure it out by playing with it  >:-)

Sorry to throw a wrench into the whole, "social" thing, but then I've never claimed to be "normal" :P

I like paper books, no assembly, manual, batteries or warranty. They are organic, portable, biodegradable, and require no assistance.

So do I.  I hate to read stuff on a screen when I can choose a book.
