Title: How do you pronounce Hir?

Anyone know how to pronounce Hir?
I imagine it is like her but with more of a roll on the r. So it is more like h'err.
How about Sie?
I never realised there was such a range of possible gender neutral terms available:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-neutral_pronoun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-neutral_pronoun)
I personaly like the singular use of they, them, their, themself, theirs, themselves

I thought "hir" was homophonic with "hear".

Ich spreche Deutsches.
Hir is pronounced "hear", sort of, close enough.
Sie is pronounce "see"
The German dipthong "ie" is pronounced "ee"
The German dipthong "ei" are pronounced "eye"
Tschüss!

I have heard "sie" pronounced with a "z" sound more often than with an "s" sound.

It depends on where you come from in Germany. The harder s is more often heard in Southern Germany, I understand. As are rolled r's.

I should ammend my original reply in this thread.
Hir would be pronounced "hear" if, indeed, it was a German word. Das Wort ist "hier". As in "Ich bin hier" (I am here).
If you mean the English word "her", it would be mispronounced by a native German speaker as "hair".
Verstehen Sie?

I did not think "Hir" had any significance accept in writing. Why not "Hes," rhymes with "Pez?"

Quote from: Sarah Dreams on October 08, 2008, 12:46:01 AMSorry, I meant the English word "sie." I've also seen it spelled "zie" and "ze." I usually hear it pronounced with the "z" sound, but now that I think about it, the people who did so could have been using any one of the three words...confusing.Quote from: Arch on October 08, 2008, 12:32:28 AM

If we want to have a gender-neutral pronoun, why can't we just go with "thorkplat" and be done with it?! >:-)

Is it actually pronounced? I don't think I've ever heard gender neutral pronouns actually used IRL.
