When I went public at work, I didn't make a general announcement. For one thing, it's a big, geographically dispersed company, and most of my fellow employees and contractors wouldn't know me from Eve. I had already told my boss and some co-workers whom I know well and with whom I have worked for a long time. The public announcement involved telling other co-workers with whom I interact frequently and people who lead meetings I attend regularly. Some of those people then told other meeting attendees. And of course upper management knew as soon as human resources did. I thought I had things pretty well covered.
