Title: Progesterone intoxication
Post by: Kaitlyn on October 17, 2008, 03:01:39 PM
I recently added micronized progesterone to my HRT regimen (4 days ago), and it seems to have a powerful intoxicating effect on me.  It's almost like being drunk.  10 minutes after taking it, I feel dizzy, and stagger around, and just feel all twisty and bendy overall.  I'm not able to drive safely when I'm like this.  It's not so much being tired as it is a psychomotor impairment.  I'm not sure if I'm feeling any mental changes.  Just took it 20 minutes ago, and really feeling it now.  Anyone else get this?

There's definitely a bit of dissociation, where my arms in particular feel like they don't really belong to me.

I would suggest seeing your doctor immediately.

I've looked up the side effects, and they do list temporary dizziness as a possible side effect.  It's not one of those "tell you doctor immediately if you have this" things, though.  I just hate to be a whiner.

Katie

You should take it just before going to bed

Do the effects you describe as 'intoxication' last 24/7?  If it's only after having taken the progesterone, that's almost certainly normal.  Most people (myself included) experience the same thing, and choose to take it right before bedtime.  As a side note, though the 'intoxication' effect hit me big time when I first started progesterone, it's substantially lessened with time.

It only lasts for a half-hour or so.  I know I'm supposed to take it before bed, but I'm the kind of person who screws around just to see what happens.

It actually feels a bit like mirtazapine, only less narcotic and more... girly.  I've found that a small dosage of caffeine taken in conjunction will help with the side effects.  Or, I can just take it before bed and sleep well.

EDIT: By "small dosage of caffeine", I mean that I bite a NoDoz in half.  I don't drink coffee much, never liked the flavor.
