DETROIT - In May, the LGBT community was appalled. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the language of the 2004 constitutional amendment defining marriage in Michigan as "between one man and one woman" precluded same-sex couples from receiving domestic partnership health care benefits from public employers. The decision affects hundreds of Michigan residents whose families and partners rely on one person's health care plan. To date, no other court in America has found that employers cannot extend domestic partner benefits because of an anti-marriage amendment.
