I'm curious to see who has martial arts experience and what type of martial art was studied. Even if you don't do any martial arts then maybe you have a child or significant other that does. You may answer for them. I would also like to know why you study or studied a particular MA.
Your arts do not have to be of a martial nature for you to mention them here.
I consider very mundane tasks done with the full presence of mind to be a creative interpretation of martial arts. Ex: dancing, singing, painting, gardening, etc.
I'll go first.
I studied Tae-Kwon-Do (TKD) for 7 or 8 years when I was young. My grandmother thought it would be good for me to devote my energies to learning something. Also, she wanted me to get regular exercise so I would grow up strong and she hoped I would learn some discipline. I was already interested in karate and thought I would learn how to kick butt.
I took classes in Shaolin Kung-Fu about 2 years ago. I had to quit because I could no longer fit a bi-weekly class in my schedule. What interested me about Kung-Fu was that it is a very old martial art, it is renowned for being very effective, it looks cool, the teacher at that particular school is the world's only Grandmaster, some 940 forms (katas) to learn, weapons instruction, and I had friends who were also taking it at the time.
I also took classes in Judo around the same time as Shaolin. I got into it because I had friends doing it and I wanted to know what it was like to fight on the ground like they do in Ultimate Fights. I quit because it was taking up too much time and was very damaging to my body but I did learn that it is very hard to choke someone who doesn't want to be choked. Plus, I got to roll around on the floor with some hot, sweaty guys. :D
I've have since decided that I prefer soft over hard martial arts. I would like to eventually study Tai Chi as well as Qi Gong. I feel the need to mention that I am also very interested in Reiki and Breathing/Meditation exercises even though they are not consider "martial" arts. I have little experience in either and was self-teaching when I had the time.
One more note.
I have been self-taught with nunchucks for more than 3 years now and am by no means a master but, I am very skilled with singles and doubles. The current accepted styles of nunchuck use are combat-based and trick-based, or freestyle. I like to dabble in both.
