I was reading the thread "Girl songs to help your voice":

And someone mentioned Kate Bush.  So I thought I would start this thread because Kate Bush's album "The Kick Inside" is the number one album I like to listen to when I want to feel feminine.  Kate has an unusual voice, but it really grew on me.

Anyway, this is the one album I feel epitomizes how I feel as a woman inside, what album(s) do you feel express YOUR inner (and now possibly outer) self?

Almost anything by Roberta Flack,,,,,Killing Me Softly With His Songs, First Time I Ever Saw His Face, Feel Like Making Love....

If you have not heard of her or these songs, I think it would be worth your time to..

I really love the Brandi Carlile self title album I have listen to the album and over but I also like KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope and Kelly Clarkson -Breakaway.
I need to get the latest Brandi Carlile when I get my Pepsi points save.

I love to song that Kate Bush did for the movie "she is having a baby" but I don't remember the name.

For me, I prefer anything by Alanis Morissette or Gwen Steffani (whether she's in front of No Doubt or not). Oddly enough, some of Brittany Spears' stuff, particularly "Stronger," evokes feminine feelings.

I guess for me if i want to get inspired it's proballly globus,within temptation, & nightwish all three just have STRONG female singers god every time i listen to the tracks i have from them on my mp3 player (& you would not guess what colour it c'mon guess it's well pink a few years ago my mom got it as a joke but suprise the joke was on her) mut the ones i like that i've got are diem ex dei from globus oh and two tracks from apocalyptica & lacuna coil also just a great singer anyway so i guess  my taste is mostly gothic rock i suppose.

Anyone got any suggestions for making you feel masculine?  Listening to Nickelback (the heavy songs) make me feel a little tougher.  It totally transform when I walk and that.  A real confidence booster at times.  Its odd, but feels good...

Hehe, I'm currently addicted to ->-bleeped-<- bubblegum pop and tiny tim- no idea what sort of gender that makes me feel. Makes me smile though.

Some of Epica's stuff has a nice feminine feel, as long as you pick tracks without death grunts.  The same goes for Within Temptation & Sirenia.

How 'bout stuff from the Soviet Men's Army Chorus or something like that, pretty manly stuff there.

Anything sung by Serj Tankian makes me feel all hardcore and boyish. x] A lot of times, though, guy singers with higher voices make me feel masculine simply because I can hit the notes properly, in ways that I can't with deeper-voiced males or females anymore. This would include Interpol, Motion City Soundtrack, Muse, and Placebo.

To feel feminine I'd probably listen to Lily Allen or Alanis(<3).

Jonas Brothers make me feel all masculine.
Because hearing them makes me want to F&%$ING KILL THEM.

Listening to Enya makes me feel Androgynous. Maybe because her music reminds me of fantasy stuff and a lot of fantasy characters are Androgynous (like Sheik from Zelda)

I love Alanis.. she explains everything just right. But I am a hip hop rap kinda guy.

But some of my friends listen to Cher and Shania Twain, too.

I like Cher too..

I can't believe nobody's mentioned The Boss.

You might want to try a band called Manowar. A friend refers to it as fantasy warrior metal and the description fits. When I was deeply absorbed with being male I used to listen to their music all the time.

Or, you could do your research and find out that Antony Hegarty uses both 'he' and 'she' to refer to at least the public persona.  It's part of the schtick, and naming the band after a popular slang term for a penis does not lead to less confusion.

I'm down with Husker Du also, one of the best bands almost no one ever heard of.

I don't know about that, but I do know the CDs have been pretty well received and the band seems to be doing OK.  I don't know how the person views their inner self, but to play with that sense in a performance art setting could be its own statement.

Singing helped me tremendously to alter/stretch my voice, in addition to the way some singers' music makes me feel. Also, women singers simply wrap themselves around words differently. Some of my favorites for this have been:

Sorry? This forum is open to everyone, especially us who identify as trans, crossdresser, or androgyne. I try to respect everyone, but what do you mean by basic respect? I'm just here to be able to share with people who are going through a similar experience as I am, and for support/to support others.

My post before was just music that I personally like to listen in certain moods like the title of the thread says.

I hope nothing I've written here has seemed disrespectful, if so please tell me I'm pretty new here and new to the culture at large so maybe there's something I'm missing. I'm just trying to express myself clearly and honestly

I think he is upset that you referred to an MtF with masculine pronouns (and understandibly so, because I would have beef with someone using the wrong pronouns when referring to myself or anyone else).  Everyone makes mistakes, we just need to learn from them.

The singer in question does it, at times using masculine, at times feminine when speaking and writing about themselves - so when writing about the singer, it would be OK to use either, or both.

Can't we just talk about music?  Or does it have to be "Makes you feel feminine/masculine"  I listen to all types of music and I still feel fem even after listening to Sevendust or Sheryl Crow

In fact I think that opposites rule the music industry, females attracted to John Legend, or Usher, and men to the divas.  And it kind of leaves out instrumental stuff, which is still the majority of music, just not pop schlock.

I like a lot of Riot Grrrl stuff actually. Sleater Kinney has a few albums which rule, and Bikini Kill put out some nice stuff as well. No Doubt's "Bathwater" makes me feel fem.

Mostly I prefer "genderless" music. Like trip-hop or ambient techno flavored stuff that takes me beyond gender and just into the recesses of my mind.

I enjoy Enya very much.  I also love to listen to Diana Krall.

hrmmm... actually i had a really brilliant experience a couple of nights ago. Alchemist LIVE!!!! The first gig of there's i went to i moshed like such a girl that someone who i'd never met even mentioned it on a review of the gig on the web. Their music is very heavy, but it has this hypnotic undertone that just makes me move like a woman, and like it. You should listen to Chinese Whispers! Freaking beautiful, it is the most perfect music ever, so many simple interlocking motifs slowly evolving but never falling out of sync with each other. It even got a male friend of mine – who earlier that night had been flexing his muscles at me – swinging his hips along with the music.

As for masculine, JUDAS PRIEST! Until... i turn it down low enough that i can hear myself over it, and i hear how dismally i am failing to sound like a guy :(

...EXCEPT... Hell Is Home, by Judas Priest in that brief period they had with Ripper Owens on vocals, i still don't sound great at it, but that song is nearly in my range and i can belt it out from deep down within me, punching the air on every time they say "HELL is home..." and getting every last ounce of power out of my voice. I probably still don't quite sound male, but i feel it.

Hmm. . . it just doesn't really work for me.

None of the music I actually listen to (voluntarily, at least , ;) ) really makes me feel particularly masculine/feminine, but I'll always associate heavy rap music with masculinity. I actually hate the music, but I play on an otherwise all guys ice hockey team, and the locker room pre-game (I go in after I've changed elsewhere) has always got Lil Wayne or some similar music blasting out.

Interesting topic, as for feminine I say Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, and Flyleaf because I hit every note with my high pitched voice but I still roam around singing it cause I love it

Masculine... definitely Eminem. He is my "blow off steam" type rapper. Whenever I'm stressed and just wanna run my mouth about stuff that is what I listen to. I really can't listen to rap/rock/pop without singing along with it. But singing his songs, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Nickelback make me feel masculine.

For me the choices would be Kate Bush, especially her  Kick Inside album,
Angie Hart from Frente',  Katy Steele's band 'Little Birdy', and anything by Grace Slick, especially early Jefferson Airplane.

Any guys who want to hear something masculine could give Til Lindermann from Rammstein a listen, especially some of their sea-shanty/marching song influenced tracks like 'Rosenrot', 'Ohne Dich', or 'Reise Reise'.

I love Little Birdy, ordered 'confetti' from australia especially (I'm in the UK), she has such an odd and powerful voice.

I feel all masculine and comfortable and confident, when I listen to my favourite albums and songs. They have been with me for years now, and feel like old friends.
For example John Denver's live album "The wildlife concert", or Garth Brooks' "The Chase", "Scarecrow", "No fences".
Totally the countryfish, I know.

OMG Every song you listed even Bonnie Tyler, are songs I love haha. Although Brit is my number one for eva!

I still love the same music- hard rock, metal, rock etc
in any song about relationships in any of these genres, i now relate to the point of view of the girl, so it's different but still the same to me :)

I'm just a fan of music full stop....my life without it unthinkable....

And would fully agree that music can influence mood and nature...internal or otherwise....

Wednesday 13, Korn, Cradle of Filth, Rob Zombie, Otep, My Chemical Romance, and some of Seether, Graveworm, Kottonmouth Kings, Eminem, Slipknot, In Flames, Dope, Marilyn Manson, and Vena Amori tends to make me feel very masculine. Now the bands that kinda makes me feel feminine but in a good way are Ashton Nyte, again some of Seether, The Smashing Pumpkins, Eighteen Visions, HIM, and AFI

Just got a quick question here: I notice the most answers to make you feel more feminine are nothing but female artists (for the most part) - like, did yous like those artists before your transitioning (or wherever you are on your journey), or just happened after? Or you always liked the genres that have lots of female artists?
Like, for me, I like Sarah Maclachlin, Evanacence, Cranberries etc...a lot of female artists/vocalists , but they don't really make me feel more feminine.
Like I can feel more feminine with the harder rock music more, and it looks like I'm alone on this, so just wonderin' what your thoughts on that are

Some of the songs by Erasure do make me feel more feminine, but I think that's 'cuz Andy Bell sings like a girl... !! 

Actually one of the things I loved most about Erasure (especially their early work Innocents or before...) was their gender neutral lyrics. (for the most part).

Also Bif Naked (who I mentioned above) is harder-rock-ish.  "I Love Myself Today" does bring out the grrrl in me.

One thing that bothers me so much everyday is my short hair. So I listen to Ashley Tisdales Hair. It makes me happy to think about how I'll look when it's nice and long. =/
