Title: Bit o pain
Post by: Dennis on October 29, 2008, 11:40:33 AM
Well, day 6 post-surgery. Most of it has been reasonably comfortable. Last night, however, I discovered a new agony - bladder spasms. Had a full bladder and it spasmed so hard that I couldn't relieve myself. It lasted about 15 minutes. Apparently that's normal and will decrease in severity, but holy cow I hope I don't have too many of those. It still feels painful.

I did discover the pain of waxing while I was in hospital. I thought I'd be helpful and remove the square of adhesive on my thigh that was attached to a loop for holding the catheter in place. When I looked at it (and it looked like I'd skinned a cat), I saw that it said "remove with alcohol". My sympathies are with the ladies who feel they have to wax. That tiny two inch square was enough for me. My girlfriend thought it was vastly amusing.

Otherwise recovery's going ok. Still not much energy and I can't lift anything, but other than enforced inactivity and lots of naps, I'm doing fine.

Glad all is well.  Hope they're giving you lots of good pain drugs.  :D  And take it easy.  I went back to work at day 4...probably not a good idea, but I'm not always the brightest bulb.

Yeah, I just took some of the painkillers doc prescribed, so hopefully that'll calm down the spasms. It does feel less painful now. I probably shouldn't have had a few beers last night either. I'm sure that didn't help.

Sounds like maybe muscle relaxers would help?

Congrats in any case though! Good to hear you're on the mend!

It's good to know you're getting better, Dennis.

Have you tried waxing your face yet? I imagine that would help you to relieve, or at least ignore, the pain of the surgery without any drugs at all!!  >:-)

If the spasms continue they will give you drugs for it. Luckily I only had spasms for a few days after my hysto and didn't need the drugs. I am glad you are recovering well. Did you have a cut down or laproscopic? It is hard to be still, I use a wheelchair to keep me from being too bored and seeing different sites but it is still hard to be seated so soon post op. Hope you keep healing well.

Had laparoscopic. Today has been one big discomfort. I realized this evening that I'm not getting hunger signals and hadn't eaten in 36 hours. Just ate dinner, so hopefully that'll help.

Narcotics and other drugs can decrease your appetite and reduce bowel motility. Can you hear digestive sounds from your stomach area? If so good, if not call your surgeon. Eating won't help if your bowels are shut down. If you are passing gas it is a good sign. You may need to be prescribed a mild laxative like colace 100mg bid or another treatment appropriate for your situation. Sorry to hear you are in pain but at least it shouldn't be for too long since it was a lap. A lot of the pain is actually from the CO2 they use to inflate your abdomen so they have room to work safely. It will take time for your body to reabsorb the gas properly. In the mean time it can be very painful.

Bowels are working fine. I have an herbal laxative called Internal Flush. It works so well that if you take the amount they recommend, you could launch yourself to the moon.

I slept most of yesterday and that seems to have been a turning point for me. Still have the gas pains, but at least my bladder doesn't ache any more and doesn't seem to be going into spasm.

Hey, are you taking any meds you might be allergic to?

When I was on amoxcyllin in Montreal, my stomach/intestines would cramp constantly every few minutes, on and on... never stopping until I FINALLY figured out what was going on and switched antibiotics.

Hey, Dennis!

Sorry to be late with the congrats/sympathy.  I've been busy lately and not checking the boards.  Anyway, so glad to hear you've managed to have the hysto.  No more annual PAPs! YAY!  Sorry to hear you're not feeling well, but I'm glad it's all within the bounds of normal discomfort for the surgery.  Wishing you a speedy recovery.

No waxing involved as long as you're not dumb enough to try and remove things stuck to your body without the proper tools.

Went to the Dr today and it turns out I have a massive bladder infection from the catheter. Things should clear up with a short course of antibiotics. yay.

I'm happy for you about the surgery, but not happy about the infection.

I guess, it'll just be a little extra time before you run a marathon.

I hope you heal up really fast and painlessly.
