Title: Transgender man elected mayor of Silverton, OR
Post by: Janet_Girl on November 07, 2008, 09:41:45 AM
This election marked the first African-American President. The first time in 40 years an Oregon Senate candidate beat an incumbent Senator. And in tiny Silverton, Oregon, residents have elected the man who's believed to be the first ever openly transgender mayor in the United States.

That was a remarkable story. At first I almost blew my top because they kept calling him a man. But then he explained his identity and his presentation.

I expect that someday, this will be the norm. People should be people. Transpeople should absolutely be who we are.

I was too until he explained.  But now I understand and it is good that there someone out in the open. that is showing the world that we are not something evil.

If I could sell my property here for a decent price (yeah, right), I'd give the idea of moving to Silverton a lot of thought! Sounds like a pretty good place to live!

Oh God.  What if just 25% of the people here moved to that town?

I wonder if we would be an immigration issue?

How far does the tolerance go?  I'm not being negative. Just wondering if there's a threshold.

Well in Oregon, we are protected against discrimination.  But it would have to be proven, wouldn't it.  May be we could get Dr. Bowers or another to move there and make it Transsexual City, OR.  And really boost the Tourist Trade.  Great for Silverton and Great for Oregon.

This makes me so happy and hopeful for the future, I can't even tell you.. :D  And the people quoted in the article talk about it like it's not even anything special, like it's just an afterthought.. which is exactly how it should be, imo.  The acceptance that warms my heart most is the quiet acceptance that comes from people who are so comfortable with the idea that they don't even understand any other way to react.
