Title: Suddenly sleeping for hours and hours after putting down the bottle?
Post by: Nero on November 13, 2008, 03:34:01 AM
For 2 years, I haven't been able to sleep past a full hour unless I was very, very drunk.
Now sober for a month, I'm sleeping 8 hours straight at a time?
What's going on? is my body changing?

Just a thought, but after the way you've drunk over the years the "enforced" depression of the booze will prolly still affect you for a while.

The effect could basically be a sorta hold-over from the more depressive aspects of the alcohol-effect. You sleep more.

Plus, sleeping is a good way to help heal the body.

Lots of options, but your quitting is the really important thing. Congrats of the 30 days, Nero.

If the only current price you're paying is sleeping like a log, then I'd say you've made out really, really well.

Congrats on the 30 days. And the sleep can only be good for you - 8 hours is a normal amount at least.

I wanted to add my congratulations on 30 days sober. I'm not sure what it has to do with the sleeping, but hopefully it'll last.

Congrates Nero on making the 30 days. Your body may just be tired after not getting enough sleep for far to long, Just give it some time.

Congratulations on making 30 days, Nero!  I'm proud of you!

Maybe your body is healing - slowly coming to a point of normality.

Alcohol has actually been shown to disrupt sleep to some extent.

But as others have said, that is a normal amount (and you are finally getting it), and most inportantly, congrats on 30 days.

I could get a whole lot done if I only slept an hour at night.

I'll have to think about drinking more now.

Hi nero, congrats on the 30 days. I have the same problem; only sleep a few hours a night when drinking regularly but when I stop for even a few days I sleep all night. Sometimes I sleep too much or fall asleep in the early evening and then I'm up all night. But it just takes time, maybe up to six months of sobriety to get back into a regular pattern. I guess I'm a bit of a lush.

Congratulations! I am not sure but I can only say it must be a good thing to actually be sleeping a normal amount of hours.

Congratulations Nero!

I can't say for sure, but I would think that your body is healing and rest is one of the best medicines you can have.  Don't worry about it too much.  If, after a couple of months, sleepiness is still a problem check with your doctor.  But for now, I think you're doing great!

Congrats Nero

Ive struggled with the demon bottle for years. When I have given up I feel worse in the morning than what I did when I was drinking (just really really tired)

Hi Nero and congrats
Continual alcohol abuse destroys liver, cardiac. smooth muscle and neuronal tissue. On stopping alcohol some of these regenerate, particularly the liver - if you haven't gone too far.  A lot of the liver biochemistry happens when you are asleep,, and it takes energy. Your body is shutting down to repair itself, a good thing. When my alcoholic sister finally got treatment the psychiatrist said " do not distrub her sleep, she may sleep all day until the body repairs" . Alcohol abuse and TG issues are closely linked both in the depression and acceptance. I know, I'm alcoholic and a medic TG - real fun.
Take care, sometimes it helps to say, I haven't given up drinking, I'm just putting off the next one, worked for me.

I haven't had an alcohol drink for years, but I can have one, just putting it off.
BTW it gets easier and you should be feeling that now - don't screw up over the festive seasons and if you  do,no problem start again

Too all of us who fight that problem
Cheers, LOL
