Title: Femmy Ponytails
Post by: Goldy on November 18, 2008, 12:32:25 AM

I'm looking for some ideas on how to femme up a ponytail (or your hair in general) these days without quite crossing the male to female gender line.
In the 1990s I worked for a progressive employer and I went to work in androgynous/femmy boy mode wearing androgynous clothes, earrings and a high ponytail tied together with a scrunchie that matched my shirt/blouse. At other times I wore my hair down in an alice (hair) band keeping it neat.
I have worked for a conservative org for the last eight years but it is much less conservative that when I first started there and I'm looking at ways to revert back to a more femme look.
I have thick black curly hair and it was very unruly when long. Ironically it has thinned out a tiny bit at the front and is easier to control.
Unfortunately scrunchies and alice bands don't seem to be in fashion anymore there is plenty in the shops but i've noticed that only school girls wear them.
I have these nice rope-like hair ties but I was looking for some other ideas.

Try to straighten your hair using hair straitner .It really looks feminine if you make pony tail on straight hair..

Thanks Anisha that's been suggested to me before but I love my curls.
I'd also be frightened of losing them.

QuoteLol, the only way I can imagine is if you were to do it upside down.
For a very high ponytail some bending over is required.

Quote from: Goldy on November 18, 2008, 12:32:25 AMThis is quite hard to achieve as I found out when I was first starting to transition and it comes down to something as simple as inches as crazy as it may sound. :D For me it seemed like any ponytail I made higher up then 2" of the nape of my neck cause a uneasy attention and especially if the ends sat in my hoodie and the tail was straighten out with an flat iron.

But I also had double piercing on both ears with 1" loops and the other two a little smaller then a inch and a center lip piercing which I think maybe also added to that androgynous look. ;)
I guess the bottom line is just dont wear it to high ... ;)

I've decided to keep a ponytail in the middle/top of the back of my head with a ropey tie for regular days or use thin endless band as an alice band.
For more femmy times I'll use a ponytail on top towards the back of my head or a wider alice band,
Both ponytails, of course, will have a curly tail, but after Christmas I might buy a hair straightener - I've looked at them in department stores and they don't look that scary.
Of course lately at home I've taken to wearing a butterfly clip in my hair in a sort of an updo - which is a lot of fun!
Thank you Anisha and Emme for your hair straightening advice.

After finishing hair straightening, hairdressers recommend me not to tie my hairs for a while. In my case, making ponytails tended to loosen the straight hairs. Frequent straightening damaged my hairs. I usually make ponytails when my straightened hairs become loose.
Higher ponytail would look more feminine. In my country, I see most women with ponytail cover the tied area with fabric decorations.
Apply straightening chemicals only to the newly grown hairs. My hairs once became too thin and damaged as I applied the straightening formula to the entire area of my hairs.
There are some variations in ponytails, and I am also curious about new styles of ponytail.

In general, the higher the pony tail the more feminine it looks. Try pulling it back and tying it above the ears instead of towards the neck.

Once I get the nerve up to straighten my hair after christmas I'm definitely not going to waste it on a ponytail
I think curly high ponytails are the coolest think ever. I'm just too wimpy to break the chains of male hairstyles - hoping hoping feminine hairstyles will become male hairstyles. Ie so I won't have to change.

It's call a wine-induced typo. Damn you're quick!! I fixed it up within a few minutes but you still manged to fire off that little missive in between times.
Maybe I'm a little slow because I'm on the other side of the massive Pacifc Ocean.

Well the pinky finger loses control after one drink and has this uncontrollable urge to press ENTER and post anything.
I think Ms Pinky goes by the saying, "any publicity is good publicity."
Warning:
I'm currently listening to ABBA on my iPod so whatever you say won't get me down.

Would you prefer Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Debussy, Duke Ellington, ACDC, Midnight Oil, Body Count, Fifty Cent, Silverchair, Garbage or pehaps Miles Davis if you're an Obama fan.
Hey, I listen to them all - I have very broad musical taste.
I'm sorry If, tonight, I get happy listening to crappy simple Swedish bands of the 1970s.
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
But if you're thinking, "thou doth protest too much." you're probably right.

A bit of Garbage wouldn't be bad.
Caprice No. 24 in A minor wouldn't go unappreciated in an inebriated state either.
Give me Paganini anytime anywhere.

How 'bout
"For Those About to Rock We Salute You","Ballbreaker" or, "Beds are Burning".
Aussie music isn't just inoffensive "Men at Work (Land Down Under)," some of it is quite confronting and, often, (particulary in these boards) liberating.

The femmyest ponytail in the world is that which passes through the opening in the back of a baseball cap. With the adjustable band fastened underneath it.

You know how you tie a ponytail with a stretchy band where you put the band around, twist, pull the hair through it again, twist etc. I like to only pull the hair partially through the last time round so that it forms a bit of a loop.
It looks a bit like a messy bun, and works fine on both low and high positioning.

Quote from: Goldy on November 24, 2008, 12:12:08 AMI do this one when I wear a ball cap. But, for other hats or hat-less most often I will lean over and gather it up on top of my head and slightly to one side. I have very curly hair and I like the way it pops up and then hangs. I mostly put it up to keep it out of my eyes though :icon_chick:Quote from: Hypatia on November 23, 2008, 12:51:49 PM
