When drawing up a new strategic plan to contain the spread of HIV, the Malaysia AIDS Council took care to factor in the needs of sex workers and transsexuals.
ROSE (not her real name) has been in love only once in her life, with her partner, Johan. They were not rich and they eked out a living selling aluminium cans and other recyclable materials.
He did not care that the 49-year-old had been a sex worker since she was 16.
"That was eight years ago. He gave me a life. I stopped being a sex worker. We stayed together until he died six months ago," she said.

How so sad, that poor lady. I cried most of the evening after reading that article. I couldn't even bring myself to make any comments on it until now. She reminds me of so many of the ladies that come through the woman's shelter where I work part time at here in Vancouver. It is just so heart wrenching to see some of these girls, I just wish I could wrap my arms around them and give them some of the loving they do so need.
