I'd rather like a country that had brains instead of balls ;)

I'm a U.S. citizen, currently living in western Wisconsin (Go ahead.  Get the cheese-head jokes out of your system.  ;))

However I spent most of my formative years in northern CA, and in Europe. (Germany, England, and France, plus most of my 8th year traveling to about 30 countries.)  I've also lived in Seattle and Chicago, and had the great misfortune to have been born in Ohio.

So, yeah, where am I from?  Most of the northern hemisphere.  ::)

Hey Group,

I live in God's true country.  Oregon.  1 1/2 hours to the coast, 45 minutes to the mountains.  5 minutes to the river.  And green everywhere.

I have lived in Washington ( the state, not DC ), Arizona ( great motorcycle weather ), Indiana ( 2 minutes from the Indianapolis 500 ), Michigan, Northern Cali (  yes I lived in Paradise, it is a town in northern Cali ).  I have been throught most of the lower 48.

South African, currently living in Durban on the hot, humid Indian Ocean. I lived and worked in Taiwan for a year in 2004-ish, and I lived in London till about June this year. I'd LOVE to go back to the Orient. Hong Kong ... Tokyo ... Seoul ... sigh. Taipei was awesome. Once you get used to the bustle.

Ohio.  I'm so sorry.

Anyways, me, because that's who matters.  I was born in Cincinnati, moved to West Union when I was a youngin' (1, I believe), moved to Japan when I was three, moved to Germany when I was four, moved to a pathetic suburb of Cincinnati when I was 5 and haven't moved further than down the street since, although I have traveled to Latin America for vacations.

I love America because we are the freest country in the world . . . oh wait, that's not true anymore (thank you, government and people, for ignoring the Bill of Rights).  Well, it still has that je ne sais quoi, and will always be my country and I will probably live here most of my life, although I want to live in the Netherlands for a while (Amsterdam!)

NorCal, San Francisco Bay Area, mostly the City and Sonoma County.  I lived in Iowa off and on too.  So I've lived in huge cities like SF and Oakland, smaller cities like Des Moines, suburbs, small rural towns (2) and way, way out in the country.

In terms of nationality though, I'm Irish and German, so I can start a fight with myself and I can finish it too.

Vancouver Canada!!!

I love this city. It's hip, liberal, left coast, plus I can walk down my street and get any variety of asian cuisine I could want: thai, sushi, Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, whatever. I can even find a burger joint if I wanted. LOL

This place would be perfect except for the rain.

Ah, on the Grand side.  I don't know a lot of the streets over there but we're hoping to move to that side in the near future, looking into buying a condo.  Because of foreclosures there's lots available now.

We haven't been to the GLT but go to the Parkway Speakeasy at least once a month.  Love that place, watched the Presidential debates etc. there, good times.

Wow, interesting read.

QuoteThere are allegations of a long history and tradition of sexual abuse of girls as young as 7, which culminated in 2004 in the charging of seven men living on Pitcairn, and another six now living abroad, with sex-related offences, including rape. On 25 October 2004, six men were convicted, including Steve Christian, the island's mayor at the time. See Pitcairn rape trial of 2004. After the six men lost their final appeal, the British government set up a prison on the island with an annual budget of NZD 950,000. The men began serving their sentences in late 2006, and all are expected to be freed by December of 2008.

So have they been freed yet?

Actually race is a big deal.  :-\  Especially as it interacts with nationality.  It's going to effect the lived reality of being a resident of the U.S. quite a lot.

Actually you'll find the further south and east you go, the less the color of your skin matters.
Most people down here don't even register someone's skin color.

Race isn't a big deal unless someone makes it a big deal, as in someone pops in and says, "I'm white," or, "I'm black" as if that's an overly important part of one's nationality or self identity.

I don't know what "overly important" means, but it is intrinsically important, just as much as class or gender or dis/ability etc., so I'm going to have to disagree.

The only times I've encountered it face to face are from black people, who seem to think they can blab all they want about us crackers but if we even mention anything condescending about someone of color(regardless if it has anything to do with that or not) then the double standard is slammed in your face and you're suddenly a racist.

I only have a view from my age group, but from my age group and my college experience and my professional experience, I've never encountered racism from an institution or of a violent kind.

To be honest, I agree with Annwyn. I live in Louisiana. How much more southern can you get than that? Oh what am I saying!! Even through I'm from the south and have been here all my pathetic life, I guess I can't possibly have an opinion about it.

As far as I know living here, I see plenty of "black" people daily when I go to places. I don't really notice them nor care unless they are trying to be noticed. I talk just as easy with a "black" person as I do with a "white" person -- which isn't much at first. I tend to take quite a while to open up to people.

Don't believe this post if you don't want to. I live a fairly sheltered life as it is. So, I could very well be wrong in many ways.

Seems like the longer this this goes on, the smaller my country becomes:(

No dear, the longer it goes on, the bigger the world gets.  It is after all, The World Wide Web.  As John Cleese says talking about the American World Series "When England hosts a world championship, we actually invite teams from other countries."

And that South is less racist because a) only black people down here are racisists, or b) I talk to black persons, so that can't be true.  Ya'll so cute.

No offense meant here, but since you're white, exactly what sort of racism would you expect to experience except from races other than yours?  ???

It's almost a clichie that white people never notice racism down South.

It's definitely a cliche. :\

I say 'down South' as opposed to South, because where I live, if I say 'south' everyone assumes LA, not Mississippi.  Remember, for most of us on the West Coast, America ends pretty much at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mtns.  Except for New York is out there beyond that somewhere.

I'm crossing that out only because it's true across the country.  White people here in CA are just as blind to racism as in the South.

Yep. I am North American Native decent, how much more American can that be, but since there isn't a specific category for Natives I'm a ''loserface''  "Hee, hee, hee." Like my dad use to say when I was little and was watching a sad movie and I would be crying. He would say, don't worry, it's all set up by the guy that makes the movies. ;D

Well white people in California have a lot more choices, for sure on that.  And, depending on where they live, they may well be a minority.  But it seems more insidious and less institutionalized than the South.

DOH! An educated guess, at that.

ok, tekla, here's another fave lyric of mine,

No educated guess.  Google.  You just have to know how to ask.

and I'm very weird, but I've always thought that Obscured by Clouds and Meddle were the best Floyd records, the later ones just sound overproduced and more overproduced, and then, way overproduced.

OMG! No, you're not wierd, for I whole heartedly agree. The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime,, all this and here I am considering making history herstory.

I figured some one would google it, the state reference that is. I love google. My girl hates that when ever a question comes up that can't be readily answered, I go google it.

We did it (googled) last night in the middle of the load out for The Killers to answer the question "What is the correct plural of cactus?" -- which for us, was really slowing down the effort.  And since I was the one moving the spiny little deals around, it was really slowing me down. LOL.

Try having not dated a black individual for more than a few years, once again the only racism encountered has been from across the fence.

Now you people can kindly begin supporting your claims besides making jabs at the south.
Title: Re: What's your nationality?
Post by: whatsername on December 14, 2008, 12:16:12 PM
No "jabs" intended, just relaying information contrary to what you said from people who also live there.  Clearly it is a different experience for each of you.

Institutionalized racism like the kind experienced by people of color in this country on a regular basis doesn't discriminate against you, in fact it prefers and privileges you.  So, again, I can only really repeat my question, as a white person, exactly what kind of racism would you expect to encounter except from non-white people?

If by those assertions you mean you've never seen a white person say or do anything racist, I would be astonished to learn that's true.  I have experienced white people saying and doing things ranging from mildly to overtly racist many times.

I am curious about the first half of that first sentence though, "trying having not dated a black individual for more than a few years..."  what exactly do you mean by that?  You dated a black person and now you don't?  And your experiences of racism came while you were dating that person?  If so, from whom?

I live in Mississippi and yes their is racism but in a more cloudy way. Yes you see blacks and whites in public together all the time. But if you check out the local municipal government you will find discrimination in hiring and promotion. You will also find segregated neighborhoods and churches. Partly due to culture as each keeps to their own. Just as the schools in all black areas have a harder time scoring on Sat or Act as they favor culture.

Hell, the most segregated time in America is 10:00am Sunday morning, and that's as true in Oakland and SF as it is in Mississippi.
