With the recent scare around Bisphenol A in baby-bottles, renewed focus has been placed on the impact industrial chemicals are having on us and other species. We've been seeing stories like these fade in and fade back out of the media for years now, but a report released this past Monday details for the first time just how widespread and serious the problem is.
The report, published by UK research group CHEMTrust, details widespread feminisation of vertebrates across the world, from polar-bears and gemsbok to entire fish populations under threat because of widespread intersexuality rendering male animals effectively sterile.
And human beings are not immune either. The report goes into some detail about how endocrine-disruptors and phthalates are affecting the male children of mothers exposed to them during pregnancy. These chemicals suffuse our environment which means that we are all being exposed to them.

"but populations don't jump 60 times in a few decades because of social change alone."
Yes they do. Especially when the numbers are made up by people with changing agendas.
