Title: Me again...inventive ways to style hair?? Tried the rag...PICS
Post by: Rita Irene on December 29, 2008, 03:56:39 PM
So, Im learning the super close shave, good make up application, losing weight, learning how to dress myself cutely, walk less like a man, BUT...

The thinning male pattern hair is my downfall...I cant be the only one, so besides a wig...what have you done?

Pics would be awesome...of you, or styles that work.

I have some fairly long hair, but my top rear "donut" and the left side front corner is driving me nuts...as well as a thin strip along the upper left side connecting to the donut.

I dont want implants or whatever bosley does for you...just looking for some ideas that may help.

Ive always worn a doo rag or bandana as a guy, and Im considering wearing pastel ones in girl style...with my hair hanging out the top.

Thanks girls.... :)

I have a real problem with male pattern baldness.  I basicly have no hair on the top of my head.  My avatar doesn't shown it because it is a hair system.  Way different than the old wig.  It is attached to my hear by special tape and adhesive.

But you would never know it by the picture.  If you are interested, PM and I will give you the link to the site I got it from.

Have you tried the Minoxidil (Rogaine)/Finasteride (Proscar/Propecia) combo?  It won't necessarily help the front recession as much, but the crown is a good target.  I've had about 4 months of Minoxidil and 3 of finasteride and it has made a HUGE difference for me.  It isn't just stopping loss, but I'm actively getting it back on the crown.  I had large patch of NOTHING and larger patch of thinner hair up there before I started shaving my head (part of an elaborate mental denial mechanism).  Now I've got no part of my crown without at least some real hair (not just fuzz, but true hair), and the parts that used to be thinner are actually acceptable now.  Still no big gains on my hairline, but I am seeing a lot more fuzz there so I've not given up hope yet.

My plan is to milk this combo for all they are worth for the next few years and by then the new hair cloning research (intercytex) may be on the open market to fill in the hairline holes.

Minoxidil is over the counter and available cheaply generic (like $70usd for a years supply from Sam's Club).  Finasteride is a prescription, but most people just have to ask.  Unfortunately the hair loss dosage strength of finasteride is still non-generic (the prostate reduction dosage strength is available generic though so some Drs will prescribe a partial pill of that dosage to save you money) so it can be spendy (insurance isn't going to cover a vanity drug), but you can find it cheaper if you look around.

YMMV of course.  Just so you don't think it only works for if you catch it quickly, I'm in my mid 30s and my hair started thinning more than 15 years ago though so it may be worth a try.

It would depend on the extent of the loss, but would hair extensions help?

I noticed that the hair loss I had was beginning to fill in after about the first 3 months on
antiandrogens, and at that point I also hopped on the min/fin wagon and I am very pleased with the results on both my crown and hairline. The results came slowly, but now being on
prescription meds for 14 months I can say with a smile that I have recovered at least 75% of the
hair I had lost....so Hiddenflame's suggestion is certainly worth trying.

BTW Rita, my hair loss was real bad and I have a pic but
I can't bring myself to show it so you will have to take my word
for it

Also, to add to the people using min/fin you can add a shampoo called nizoral. It's available pretty much everywhere.

I've been on min/fin for about 8 months. I've definitely made some progress, and where the scalp appears bare I can feel some fuzz now. Progress is frustratingly slow, but all i've got is time.

Rogaine works!  Not like I would prefer, but it filled in the top-side baldspot, which was almost tennis ball-sized, and actually brought the front forward enough that I can live without (but would love to have!) microtransplants.

Oh yeah....
Cute, short styles that cover and frame your face are better than long 'guy hair'

One always thinks of the front facial view when presenting but the side view  also can cause problems. I agree whole heartedly with you Bev on a hair style that frames the face as it tends to hide some of the side views until longer lasting remedys are taken. Hugs

HRT, t-blockers and meds can help.. there are other options too. I have a few friends that have some kind of hair system that's glued on -- it looks really good and no one would know it's not real.

I'm using rogaine too.  It works well for me and new hair growth on the head and for a while the back (yuck).  Luckyly the back hair is gone now.

Depends on the person.  For me it worked on the front quite well.
