Yep I ride, it broke my heart to put it away for the winter :( .  I've been riding for years.  I plan on riding to Sturgis this year, it will take me about four days :)

Here's my bike - A V-Star Classic Custom Canadian edition.

You look at home Steph.

I've only ridden on the back of one. I'd love to get one but I'd need to take lessons and stuff.

Hey Rita Irene, thanks for this thread. I was considering the same topic not long ago.

I hope this (graphic) works. I was having trouble earlier trying to post a seasons greetings graphic.

Steph seems to have it down pat.

I was trying to link to an image at myspace, but it didn't work. the evil X was always there. :-\

note: this was taken before I scraped the right bag on an off camber right turn trying to stay  in my lane, that was a fright!! Only going 38 mph, gps was there to doc it,,,

I have a 08 kawasaki 250r. I wanted to get a bigger bike, but everyone I know as well as the bike salesman said that I should start on a smaller bike.

It pretty much looks like this

No, but seeing as I can't afford a car anymore I'm thinking about learning to ride and getting one.

20 minutes waiting for a bus in the freezing cold and driving rain is a pain.

I stayed away from bikes for 38 years. When I went back to school a friend suggested taking the riders course to get back into the classroom thing. The rest,, in the rear view mirror getting smaller quickly.

I was going to get a cruiser, but the K11 (used) was in the showroom for about $4K less than the cruisers I was looking at. And insurance is less than for sportbikes. It seems the paper pushers think only conservitive geezers ride BMW's.

It has to do with theft rates for BMW, there is little to no market for used parts, so they don't get jacked like H-Ds and Hondas do.

Well I would think the big cruisers have a slightly lower rate then the crotch rockets (also called, sucicyles and donorcycles in California) and people are not tempted to drive as fast on them, and they handle like an ox in heat, so that kind of 'right on the edge' stuff is right out too.

Ridgecrest, gateway to Trona?  I have an interesting story about that place, and the CLNWTC.

But I got to the point where I no longer trusted the other people on the road.

I've never been to Ridgecrest, maybe this spring. I need to visit my ma. I googled Trona, so I guess Yes is the answer.
Couldn't readily find info on CLNWTC, what's that?
Trusting OP is why I'm not riding much w/o medical coverage, which is a bummer. My gf loves riding.

China Lake Navel Weapons Testing Center - its right there in Ridgecrest.  Or. more to the point, its this huge thing outside of Ridgecrest.  But go north from there and take Hwy 190 into Death Valley, its a great ride.

One definitely must keep there wits about them when riding that's for sure.  I've had a couple of close calls myself because other motorist don't see us, but luckily I was "Seeing" and avoided a collision.

Personally I love the freedom that riding brings.  It is also a great way to meet people from all walks of life.  And yes I love the attention I get when I'm dressed in a black bra, leather vest, jeans, chaps, and boots.  While lady riders are nothing new we still get the looks some good some bad but what the heck I love to ride.

I-190 looks like a sweet ride. GoogleMaps, gotta love it! From a mile up it looks almost as twisty as the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire, but longer. Maybe i can rent a ride if'n I get there,,

Yeah, and the entire Death Valley trip is pretty cool too, but we used to do it on trail bikes so we could get back to all the old mines and ghost towns.  Just don't do it in the middle of summer, can get up to 140 degrees F surface temps.

Adventure bike/ dual sport is on the shopping list. I've had the K11 over babyheads, throught pastures and across a 2 foot wide 300 foot long ridge to find campsites. I'd post an image, but there on my PC some 30 miles away.

Yup, 3 white knucklers in 7 years, and our group has been called "aggressive riders', but it's still scarey .
I'm always scanning, and I never hit a speed where I can't stop where I can see.

The "left turn" is another major threat. Wrecked two friends bikes last summer. The rate of travel was legal, gps proves it, but it happens quick. Both were seasoned riders, years on bikes of all kinds.

Alway remember the two rules of riding.

1: Ride like you are invisible.  Not that people can't see, they just don't.

2: Remember who is in charge.  The Bike.  Always ask it for permission before doing anything.

To forget these two rules will result in road rash, broken bones or worst.

Love that first bike !

Would never be happy with my image on a sedate V-twin Harley cruiser (or Yamaha copy) ...

My dream bike would be a new Honda Fireblade, but its not the cash, more so getting my license and keeping myself alive !

My track record with cars is none too good ...  ::)  ...

I'm still in the process of getting mine up and running.  I've cleaned the carbs out (well about 90% at least), gotten new fuel lines and aftermarket filters to keep those carbs cleaner.  Now I am just waiting till I have some extra money and some warm weather to really get started with cleaning the tank (the inside  :)).  Oh, btw, it's a 1980 650 Yamaha Maxim if you're curious.

Hi Laura,

There was a year or two in the US, where cars and bikes were required to have speedo's that only went up to 80 mph.  The theroy being that people would not speed so much.  Needless to say that failed to catch on.... Thank goodness.

Beni
Title: Re: Anyone ride a motorcycle?

heh. Not to mention the 10% speedometer/actual speed nonsense that's still done because US laws say it has to be done.

For the non-rider folks: it means that motorcycle speedometers read at least 10% higher than your actual speed. So if my speedometer says I'm doing 50, I'm really only doing 45mph. 50 x .10 = 5, 50-5=45.

The whole idea was to curb speeding. It just made us good at math. :P

Here is something I found about speedometers and the law at the time this bike was made.
Quote55 mph speedometers
On September 1 1979, in a rulemaking that also regulated speedometer and odometer accuracy, the NHTSA required speedometers to have special emphasis on the number 55 and a maximum speed of 85 mph. However, on October 22 1981, the NHTSA proposed eliminating speedometer and odometer rules because they were "unlikely to yield significant safety benefits" and "[a] highlighted '55' on a speedometer scale adds little to the information provided to the driver by a roadside speed limit sign."
