Police officer and state Senator Kevin Witkos brought up a standard argument against such laws, opposing the measure on the grounds that "perverse people" could enter women's restrooms fraudulently, under cover of the law.
Said the Senator, "That would have to be addressed in the legislation or it will not get my support."
Witkos also argued that the law could have adverse effects on school children.
"It impacts the learning environment," said Witkos.
The article noted that transgendered people do not always have the support of the gay and lesbian community, but that in this instance the gay equality group Love Makes a Family has voiced its backing of the legislation.
