Transgender ed : San Francisco's budget problems have forced a clampdown on overtime throughout the Police Department, but somehow time is being carved out for all inspectors to attend mandatory training on "transgender community awareness."
The class is being taught by Lt. Stephan Thorne, the department's first transgender officer.
"I'm not sure what the point of a class is," said police union spokesman Steve Johnson. "They could have just summed it up with a six-word memo: 'Be nice. Be professional. Be polite.' "
