Title: Hug the closest tall woman you see next! ..or, Affirmations of a tall woman!
Post by: mmelny on January 16, 2009, 08:03:20 PM
This post is probably more of a blot then anything, but if it helps one person, it's worth a few wasted pixels.  :icon_ballbounce:
----

Today's affirmation:

I am a tall woman.  Woman.  I find my strength within, when people look at me, they see a confident, tall, woman.  Height is a physical attribute.  It is not an identifier, nor a definition of who I am as a person.  My height is certainly a highly identifiable trait of how others might describe me when speaking about me, but it certainly doesn't define me.  I am a tall woman.  A Woman.

----
And no, I'm not a big self-affirmationalist (lol, that Stuart Smalley character was so dang annoying on SNL), analyze this and that kind of person.  I'm reflecting a bit on my past as I boldly stride forward into a new awareness for myself, both in introspective aspects of realizing a new level of self knowledge, and understanding the impacts that the changes in my life have on my real-life acquaintances, co-workers, friends, family and anonymous folk that cross my path.

When I first started transition, it was after many years of wishy-washiness.  MANY years of not having the confidence, and bundled with overwhelming self doubts to do so.   One day something clicked.   I looked at the reasons I hadn't been able to transition when I wanted to.  They all pointed back at me.   Honestly I was not ready.  However, I always wanted to point a finger at my height as a handicap to my viability as fulfilling the person that I knew I wanted to be, that I was/am.

I am tall, by any standard, at 6'2".  Men and Women look up to me, *usually*.  It's a rare opportunity I cherish when I have to look up to see the bottom of someone's chin. I am tall.   I'm so glad I could establish that fact.  Welcome to my post and dribble if you have made it this far.

Back to my point.  I used my height as a factor in delaying my decision to transition for awhile.  A long while.  Until life bore out the fact that I would never be happy living the way I was.  "There's no way I can pass being this tall",  "I'm a freak, freakishly tall", etc blah blah blah were things that crossed through me, excuses.  One online "friend" that I had talked to years ago, even said something that affirmed my worst fears,  saying to me directly.. "a 6'2" guy will never pass or come close to it".   A single sentence that took my breath away, and made me reflect/moan/cry (feel sorry for myself *yuck*) for a few weeks.  A very useful time for me, in that the results of my reflections then, resulted in the understanding for me that the true issue is not, and never will be about passability.  I'm not trying to pass for anything, I'm just being me.

Yikes!  I've lost track of my point... Ok, so it's my post, I'm allowed to meander...   :P

Oh yes, so don't let anything stop you from doing what you want to do, being who you are,  height is not a factor.  Many things that you think may be factors, that you are more cognizant of then anyone else, are NOT as important to other people as you think they are.

Still wearing heels when the occasion or desire dictates 'em!  Striding boldly and lankily forward... hello world, hear me roar, *giggles*!

*huggs*,
Melan

I am pretty tall by standards too being around like 6'1 and I procrastinated transition a LOT too just because I fear I will never pass being this tall.

It still dreads me today with my height, but I guess time can only tell.

I'm just under 6'2" and have heard a variety of comments both good and not so good. "Tall drink of water, Horsey d!ke B-----, Supermodel." Some folks are nice, some are not. But most important is your own self esteem. Walk proud and give a kind smile. Even to the meenies. When you feel beautiful it projects to others

Lol, 6'2" seems to be the magic number. ;D I'm that tall, too. I've only met a couple of women I look up to, in a physical sense, but they looked really good.

I'm not so much bothered about my height as I used to be, largely because there really isn't any point. Hating something doesn't change it. Particularly fruitless is hating something you can't change. Might as well use it. :)

Thank you for the post. *hugs*

6'3" here. Just like you, I get comments about my height all the time. Today the girl who waxed my brows told me, "It must be wonderful to be so tall." She stood about 5'1". We commiserated about the inconveniences of tallness/shortness. I complained about everything being built for shorter people, and she complained about everything being built for taller people. In the end we agreed 5'8" or 5'9" would be best because then you get to wear all the best clothes, and fit easily into cars, while still being tall enough to reach high-ish shelves.

On the plus side, I have super long legs and I knife through crowds with ease.

I have never really heard negative comments about my height, but people bring it up more often than the weather as a conversation starter with me, so it does get a little tiresome.

That is so funny and true.  How many times do I find myself the subject of "height" conversations, standing in a group of old or new friends.   I just smile and look quickly for a change of subject, or make a bad joke, like "anyone want cheese, grabbing some from the moon".

Thank you all for your replies, nice to see some women "standing tall" and pushing forward with their dreams.   If you are letting height stop you from being the person you want/know yourself to be, don't!, is the motto of this story.

I shouldn't say a thing given that im just 5'9'' But I used to or still do have some problems with being a tall woman.

Its a bit annoying in the shoe area. Finding them its not so easy and clothes too.

But I have started to be more comfortable with my height. I mean its not so bad except for the part that im more noticeable than other girls.

Ohhh Zelane, you are right, you are not going to find much sympathy for a 5'9" height, at least from this woman.   :P

For shoes, have you tried Payless (Shoesource) ?  They have large women's shoe sizes going up to 12 in-store (or is that 13?)  They have a great online site too, before I was out, I would shop the online site, catching their BOGO sales.  Now I continue to shop in their stores, it's nice looking at my shoe size, and it not being at the END of the women's aisle.  (I am a size 10/11).

For clothes, where are you shopping that you have issues with a 5'9" frame?  The teenybopper shops in the mall?  That i could understand, possibly.  However even at my height, with my tall lanky arms, I find tall sizes in the "regular" clothing stores geared towards normal sized women, lol.   I've never had to shop a "big and tall women's" store.   Mind you, I always take things to the fitting room, women's sizing being chaotic at best.

Oh well, good luck, and thank's for hijacking the thread, *giggles*   :P  ... which I was most happy to continue, *smiles*.

Yay my first hijacked thread without intention :p

BTW Melan, hows the weather up there? Do clouds taste good? (Sorry could resist it) It would be interesting to stand next to a taller woman than me. I want to feel tiny at least once :p

Well, the point is I dont shop online and my shoes size its 10 (I still wonder if its a "normal" size for my height or im just having huge feet) And here in my city its kinda rare that stores carry up to that number. Mostly up to 9 which its annoying. And the few 10 that arrives are hunt like crazy since there are a lot of tall women here.

The problem with my clothes its that i fat and right now I dont want to show my bellybutton. So if they are shorter its annoying. And of course jeans that tend to be shorter sometimes -_-

Bad things about being told:

  • Your bed its shorter or the same height as you (so your feet go out of it)
  • The mirrors tend to be in a position for short people
  • The shower can hit your head
  • Bathroom, laundry and kitchen sinks are very low and your back hurts
  • People tends to look at you more

I love tall women. Tall = beautiful in my opinion. That said, at 5'10 I'm still taller than 99% of women in this country, and it can be a little unnerving. If I were president I would pass a law such that women taller than 5'9" could deduct the cost of high heel shoes from their taxes. It's a good thing I'm not president! :D

I've never actually uttered that joke in public, but perhaps I will now lol....

And yes, we tall women are hot!!!!  Although sometimes the attention isn't always desirable, like on a bad hair day *giggles*, days I tend to hunch a bit.

It is about smiling and embracing who we are, everyone has their "tick", that thing that makes you stand out that you can't do anything about ... short or tall..  it's how you accept it.

I'm 6'1" with a size 12.  I've shopped online for several years and have found clothing rather easily.  I tend to shy away from high heels, although I have worn them on occasion.  For those who aren't quite out yet, online shopping is great once you know your sizes.  I would be careful with those credit cards, though...

QuoteShe, for there can be no doubt about her sex, is visiting the house she finally lost for the first time in over a 100 years.

She does still have some natural advantages of course [from previously being a man]. She is tall and slim with a slightly androgynous appearance that many females at the time [now] aspired.

Yay!!!! Thank You Christine, I wish you the best with getting out!  You'll find it gets easier and easier with every trip out.  Even with my height, people don't even give me a 2nd glance when out shopping or traveling.   It's about getting out and getting comfortable, once you are comfortable and confident, height is just a number (and a bit of neck pain for a few shorter people when talking to you)  ;)

I think tall transitioners are generally overworried of their size, the city i work in i see women of every height imaginable so...

Just use what you have i say..some like tall some small who really care eventually, they can all look devastating :)

That's a funny observation that I've seen too.  Like to find a size 10/11 in most stores is impossible, then when I goto payless which has up to size 12 in women's, sometimes it's hard to squeeze in between all the women with my same size shoe.   It's odd too because they aren't really that tall, they just have big feet.  More stores need to carry the larger sizes.   Would be nice if to get a list of stores that carry sizes larger then 9.  The mall is the worst, a study in disappointment, going to the department and boutique stores, almost always only go up to 9, sigh.

Frederick's? Really?

I don't think this is what most women are looking for most of the time:

Heels are one thing. Five-inch stiletto cfm shoes are quite another.

I have no problem with Zappos -- just Frederick's. Well, not really a problem, just slight shock that you suggested them.

But okay, since you asked, here's my advice:

If you want to get shoe's from a lingerie retailer, I'd go for Victoria's Secret -- I've have a pair of ballet flats I bought online from them that I lke a lot. They sell shoes in their house brand up to 11, though unfortunately it's a lousy brand. But at least they have some shoes that you can actually wear outside, and they occasionally carry shoes from other makers in 11 (generally just up to 10). Overall, you might as well buy from Target.

I don't really like Zappos, actually -- they tend to have lots and lots of of shoes that I don't want to buy. If I find a shoe online, it's usually by searching through a bunch of different stores -- Macy's, Ann Taylor, Steve Madden, etc. They usually have completely haphazard size selections -- but they also usually have search functions which allow you to pick a size. I've seen sizes up to 12 where I really didn't expect it.

But of course, it's always best to buy in person. Uncomfortable feet are unpleasant. I got a pair of cute, quite comfortable shoes from Ross a size down from what I usually wear (10 instead of 11). If I'd gotten them online, I would have gone for size 11, and they would have been too big. I have another pair of shoes from the same maker that also fit well. So in general, I'd recommend against buying shoes online.

Then again, I just bought a pair of ski boots online -- from Sierra Trading Post, in case you're wondering. ;) -- which everyone says is a really dumb thing to do. Luckily they fit well, size 27.5. My feet are pleased. :)

I guess that at 5' 10", I'm the shortest woman here!  When I wear my heels, I come in at a solid 6' 1".  Does that count?  ;)

I find that I tend to sit when talking, that allows me to be on eye-level with the other women around.  It also gives the men the opportunity to look downwards in my direction (as opposed to looking down at me).

I usually shop at either payless.com or avenue.com for shoes.  (13W)  The sizes at Avenue.com tend to be very consistant.  I first discovered their cloudwalker shoes via ebay.  I also think that their shoes are the most comfortable I have ever worn - this includes 3" heels.  As a high school teacher, I am on my feet a LOT, so comfort is important.

Well I'm 5' 7" and still feel that I'm taller than most women in the UK (bring in the young Scandinavian women who now have an average height of over 5' 8" !) !!!

Do like my height though.

UK shoe size 6 - 7, US 8, so no issues in normal shoe shops ...

That is a great link.  The tall woman thread knows no boundaries, we have shoes and online shopping almost covered here!  *giggles*

Totally joking, the two issues are very akin.  Being taller, larger sized is directly related to finding clothes/shoes that fit our larger frames.

One thing that I've never understood about shoe sizing, is how I can be a 10.5 in men's shoes, but in women's, a size 10 or 11 depending on the shoe/boot type.. when all sizing charts (not just your link Zelane),  indicate I should be around a 12.  Oh well, I'll take it!   Makes life much easier that the two match ;)

I guess I count for this, though the circumstances are kinda unusual. I'm about 5'10 and a half, but tallness seems to run in the female side of my family anyway, because two of my aunts are taller then me - at 5'11 and 6'1 respectively, with my grandma just a bit behind me at 5'9, and my cousin at 5'7-8 and only coming up on age 16. So I probably would have ended up this tall no matter what. Which is a good thing? I guess.

I guess.

You shorter girls are definitely not getting any sympathy from me *giggles*.  5'10" is a nice height, I have at least a forehead on you lol....  oh well, we draw the straws and we get what we get out of the genetic sludge of the human genome.   I'm by far the tallest person in my family *ever*, no one else has ever been this tall.. why me lol....  I blame it on growth hormones in ice cream.. I ate A LOT of ice cream growing up ;)

My growth stopped at age 16 at 5'9'' It was between funny and weird seeing a cousin catch up to me. In junior HS I was the 2nd tallest in the classroom being the 1st another girl.

At work, there are only 3 other women on the mgmt team, and one of them is 5'10, but insists on wearing heels.. much to my delight :)

Eye to eye is so nice.  Once I'm full time, I need her to wear a REALLY tall heel to keep up with my 2-3" ones ;)

Just kinda posting on this thread keeping it alive for no real good reason ;)

So it turned into a shopping thread for tall women.  On that subject, I finally meandered into a Tall Girl store (today).  The first rule of Tall Girl is, make sure there is a sale on.  Today there was a sale on!  The winter close out, get the stuff while it's hot, and still on sale.   The 2nd rule of Tall Girl, that even at 6'2", there is a good possibility, even in 3.5" heeled boots as I happened to be wearing, that there will be yet a taller person then yourself in the store.   There was!   I love tall women, I love women that are even taller then me even more!  ;D

One of the clerks was tall, like 6'5", and I had to catch myself from saying, you are really tall girlfriend, like she hasn't heard that enough in her life, or me in mine lol.  NOW, I see why this happens lol.   The shoe's on the other foot.   I did not say it, thank goodness.

This is the first time I've put on pants, and they were TOO long lol.  What a wonderful thing.  Ok, I loved the pants, and was disappointed, but the feeling that the clothes were too long for my legs was too much of a rush to care about the improper sizing.   So, the clerk brings me a pair of Foxy stretch denim jeans.  Something I would have never picked up to buy on my own, but I take them into the fitting room anyway.   Squeezing size 8 jeans onto a frame that normally wears a 10/12 in pants, was a chore, but I fell in love with the stretch, and the styling, and now, I'm one of those people, that wear Foxy jeans, lol.

Oh well, *huggs*,

I have been putting off going through my own transition because of my height...
I'm 6'3" and finding things to fit is rather hard, online shopping is my best route but then I don't know how things will fit.
I think that I have finally set a date that I want to start down the path to being me full time.
This is my first time posting here and I'm hoping that I can find a nice community that will be there if I need help.

I'm 6 foot even and I love heels. I get alot of looks but I like attention. There are some larger sizes at Payless shoes. Usually 11W and sometimes 12. The price is good. Those sizes don't sell much so they are usually on sale. Hurrah for tall girls. While wearing heels do you bump your head alot? I do but not too often. Leslie shoes on line has nice shoes. Hugs, Genevieve

HUGS,HUGS,HUGS

I love this thread.  How have I missed it for so long.

I am 6'4", and of course, before I transitioned I thought how impossible it would be, but now on the other side for 8 years, I am having the time of my life.

I wear 2" heels in the summer, and flats in the winter (except for boots), so I am so looking forward to warm weather to wear heels and less clothes.

But of course, at 6'4" I am noticed, and looked at, so it just gives me another reason to look as good as I can every day.

A SHOUT OUT to all the tall girls!!!!!!

Hello again Melan, You appear to have nice hands in the photo. I feel self concious about the size of my hands. Many tall people have large hands. I've heard that many GG's get jealous over tall girls like you with great legs. Hugs, Genevieve

I feel like a necromancer... " Rise, Dead Thread! RISE! *evil laugh* "

But seriously, I just came across this thread (Thank you Melan!) and HAD to go all Evil Dead on it. I am 6'2", with a womens size 13 shoe. (I can squeeze into a 12 when I am at my optimum weight though.) I was all doom and gloom about it, but hearing everyone's stories has helped immensely.

My $0.02 for shoe shopping - you knew there had to be more shopping links! - http://www.pierresilber.com/ (http://www.pierresilber.com/) Not the best shoes by any means, but they have high heels up to size 15  :o

Melan, that's a beautiful post!

Gotta agree with Alyssa.  Tall women are awesome!  There are several tall gals (genetic females) who work at our local mall.  Naturally, they are young ... in their 20s.  They are SO attractive.

I love the part about when your confidence kicked in ... yes!  Good for you!

Melan, that's a beautiful post!

Thank you LaceyLynne!   It feels like so long ago when I posted this thread initially.  So much has happened since then, and I'm so happy that I had the courage to push through apprehensions, especially regarding height, to see transition to 'completion'.   I hope that others are helped by hearing stories of success and can also push past this perceived obstacle to fulfilling their dreams.

And Alyssa, I sooo agree tall women are hot!  Relate a story of this weekend, where tall women were everywhere I looked, beyond just the mirror ;)

I met a woman on, of all places, Plenty of Fish.   She was looking for another tall woman.   We went out this last Friday night, dancing.  Funny enough, the two of us, at 6'4 or so with heels, meet up with another tall woman that we lock eyes with above the heads of the other dancing folks, that was out, dancing on her own, and we proceed to hit other clubs up the street, gathering tall women around us (LGBT bars, have to love 'em!) .  It was such a blast, and so funny to see this group of beautiful tall women proudly and happily frolicking  :P.  You would have swore it was a model convention (which, one of the women was!).

Tall woman power!  :icon_geekdance:

What a thread,

I was in the gym this week and two of the girls from the Adelaide Lighting basket ball team were either side of me on the tread mills. I won't mention names :-* I'm 5' 7'' average to tall for a girl here. Next to two wonderful and totally beautiful  6' 5'' women ,they rocked. They both said hello and a quick female chat to me after, neither seemed phased by my rather androgyne look I now have in the gym. I think we need to remember, women come in all shapes and sizes.

Wow I've never posted on an Evil Dead thread before!!!!  (i have the special edition with a book of the dead cover!! LOL)

I'm 6'2...i am blessed with size 10ish (really closer to 11) feet... i can wear size 10 strappy heels but otherwise 11...

I have to admit i'm sheepish about putting on some heels and when i look around the only time i see women as tall as me, they seem to be 5'11 with 3 inch heels....

maybe i should just get over it, but so far i havent even shopped for heels

I've just got to chime in again and say, "Tall women ROCK!"

I see tall women, genetic girls mostly, of course, at our local mall who are tall and SOOO hot!  Take what you've got and work it!  Here's to ya!    ;)
