A gay man has been appointed to a No. 2 position within the Democratic National Committee.
Ray Buckley, chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, was elected Wednesday as president of the Association of State Democratic Chairs, the national body of chairs and vice-chairs of state Democratic parties. Buckley also becomes one of five DNC vice-chairs, according to the organization's bylaws.
"I'm thankful for their early and enthusiastic support for my candidacy in this competitive race," Buckley said in a statement Wednesday. "I'm looking forward to deepening the partnerships between state parties and LGBT Democrats as we move toward additional Democratic victories over the next two years."
Buckley's designation as vice-chair means that he has displaced Andy Tobias, the treasurer at DNC, as the organization's highest-ranking openly gay official.
