I am saddened and frightened by news that Professor Lynn Conway, a dear friend and outspoken advocate for the trans-community, has been threatened with a lawsuit by attorneys on behalf of the University of Toronto Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH, formerly the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry) and CAMH psychologist Dr. Kenneth Zucker.[1] Dr. Zucker is chairman of the Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders Work Group for the upcoming fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. He and CAMH colleagues played central roles in authoring the current gender pathology categories of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) and Transvestic Fetishism in the DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR. Zucker's controversial practice of gender-reparative psychological therapies upon gender nonconforming children was highlighted in a National Public Radio interview last May.[2,3]

It is great publicity for one side to threaten legal actions, especially when they can get the publicity, publicity, publicity----bzzzt!! zzzzaaaapppp! Spoingggggg!!!!

In reality, some of this could badly backfire on the aggressor and in this case would be well deserved.  The only real problem though is that such cases get two shots at publicity, when they are made, and when the court verdict is finally read (oh, one or two squibs during the trail of course), but the worst thing is that it will be several years between the threat and the verdict, during which time there will be distraction upon distraction for the parties, but nothing for the masses. In real truth, the point is the distraction that prevents real attention to the point that both the parties are trying to present.

Lets hope a water bucket gets tossed on this one fast!!!
