Title: T cutting back on lifespan?

So I was watching TransGeneration with a friend and at the beginning one of the guys mentioned how he researched testosterone religiously and one reason why he was wary of taking it was shortened lifespan.
Was he referring to the potential cancer situation or does T really affect your lifespan? I don't think I've read anything about shortened lifespan.

probably just the fact that women live longer than men and with T, you've got the lifespan of a man.

Testosterone puts you in the same cardiac risk category as men. That's all it means.
you guys who just started sure are freaking out about this stuff.

I haven't started T just yet, but I was curious. I'd rather take a shorter lifespan than offing myself off under the dysphoria and anxiety, no matter how much I am against suicide.

It does increase risks of heart disease.. you just have to be careful with diet and exercise. You cant mistreat your body.

I swear I heard that heart disease takes more women's lives than men's..
I think metabolism has to do with lifespan. T burns more calories from having more muscle mass, and I've read that animals with slower metabolisms live longer. also boys are more likely to be miscarried, get recessive genetic diseases, die from violence, war, etc etc
Ok I don't really know anything. All in all it's all just statistics.
I'd rather have a short, happier life as a man.

And I'm sure with anxiety cut back, it makes for a healthier life as well.
I kind of figured that the whole men not living as long as women deal was because men are usually allowed to work in the more 'dangerous' jobs and the army and all that. Pretty much the army, violence, everything that you've said. I'm more willing to go with that.
Don't women also have a lot of health issues to deal with? It's not as though this isn't anything new. It's hard to watch tv without a commercial or the news talking about why women should be careful with their health because of whatever.

Women have PLENTY of health issues to deal with. It's all a matter of what you're most worried about. As other guys have said, testosterone only shortens your life in that it makes your life expectancy that of a male instead of a female. If you'd been born male to begin with, you'd already be dealing with that. The only problem being on T can cause, beyond putting you at the same risk for things as any guy, is liver problems... the introduction of any drug/hormone/whatever can cause that. That's why they don't prescribe oral T unless it's absolutely necessary. Regular medical tests, though, should keep you from having any big problems... you'll be able to fix pretty much anything if you catch it early enough.
Actually, as far as women living longer than men in general, it's just a wonderful fact of life that women are, despite all outside appearances, stronger than men. It's in the genes. 90% of babies conceived are male, and yet only 50% of births are male. Why is that? Males are at a far higher risk of death in utero. The majority of stillbirths are male, as are miscarriages. If you think about it, even though men do a lot of the grunt work in the world, traditionally, it's women who have the biggest job: carrying children, continuing the species. Pregnancy and childbirth take a massive toll on the human body... a toll that the male body simply could not handle, by design.
Honestly, I wonder if despite ftms going from estrogen to testosterone, do we still retain that female strength? Haha. Maybe we're all just supermen.

Hah. I like that idea.
Who knows. I haven't heard anything definitive about FtM health. There just hasn't been a big enough study and transitioning hasn't been going on as long as the rest of human history (not in the way we think of it today anyway). We don't have the caliber of statistics we really need to understand life expectancies of transmen, transwomen, or anyone else who takes hormones for a transition of sorts.
