Title: I HATE MY WORK!
Post by: Carolyn on March 13, 2009, 04:13:02 AM
Okay first and foremost, I work at KFC as a cook, I bread the chicken and all that crap. I work in a kitchen with NOTHING but guys, while all the females work up front dealing with the costumes (Not something I wish to do). Moving on, like I said I work with alot of guys in the back...about 7 guys and me (only two to three cooks at a time, so 1 to 2 guys plus me) I have been there for about 2 years now, started May 1 2007. Came out as female somewhere about a 7 months ago, and requested that the terms "He, Him, His, and Josh" stop being used when referring to me. So far only "Josh" has been killed off, Now I am either Schaible (My last name) or Carolyn at work. The only person that refers to me with the female terms is my Boss Jamie Day. But everyone else still says He, His, ect. I'm so sick of it, I just want to quit, I have told them I find it very disrespectful and still they continue. As an added bonus my co-worker "Bud" knows a few trans-women and yet he still calls them men, It really PISSES ME OFF!!!!! GOD I HATE THEM!!!!

Carolyn:

I'm so sorry for your situation.  This really is outrageous and uncalled for.

As part of a larger corporation, you should be able to contact Human Resources for advice and action if necessary.

It really is the responsibility of your manager to maintain a good working environment.  And while he may be accepting of your transition, if he cannot get the "guys" to toe the line with respectful and appropriate gender references, they could be up for disciplinary actions up to and including termination if KFC is a zero-tolerance company (I don't recall if they are).

You have a couple of options, stay or leave.  If you leave because of their harassment, that is your choice.  But if you stay, you can either take the crap that they give you or you can stand up for yourself.

I like to say that I have more b*lls now than anytime I had testicles, but I found the strength to stand up because I am proud of me for the first time in my life.  And you should be too, Carolyn.  Transitioning shouldn't be as hard as it is for so many of us, but the only way it can change is if we, each one of us, stand up for ourselves.

Carolyn, I am still facing this at work with certain people whether it slips there mind as they are thinking about something else is unknown I have corrected a few and they have been fine. But still continue to do it.

Can you not speak to your manager and get him to relay that you want the pronouns corrected?

Or like Sandy suggested contact your Human Resources place as your company should have one and talk to some one there.

Sorry I couldn't be any more help. *hugs*

Jay

"If you don't where you work, QUIT!!!!"

                and,

"be sure too have another job lined up first."

Are two of the best pieces of advice that I have ever heard.

If complaining to management does not work, write a letter to the CEO and send it certified mail.

KFC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Yum! Brands.

Just got sent home, I was suppose to work 11-8 today, but instead I got sent home early because as my boss put it "We have 3 cooks we don't need you" even though the other two cooks, aren't good cooks. 1 of them was moved up front because he couldn't cook the chicken in the back quick enough, the other is a 67 year old man who just does the dishes all day. Out of all the cooks I only get about 22-25 Hours each week, and the rest get about 34-37 Hours, and on top of that, one of them keeps having No Calls No Shows, he has had at least 5 of them so far, and on that of that I got into a fight with both Jamie and Brandy (My two Bosses) Thursday Night at close about the whole "He, His, Him" Crap again. Is it May yet? I'll take my two weeks paid vacation and them I'm gone.
