Angie ZapataA few weeks ago, Pam and I received an email from Jen Caltrider of ProgressNow Colorado. She asked us if one of us would go to Greeley, Colorado in April to cover the murder trial of Allen Andrade -- the man who is facing first-degree murder charges for the death of Angie Zapata.
As many readers of Pam's House Blend already know, Angie Zapata is an 18-year-old transgender woman -- she was found brutally murdered in her Greeley, Colorado apartment on July 17th, 2008.
I didn't know until talking to Mara Keisling a week or so ago that her murder is apparently the first murder in which a state hate crime law that specifically covers transgender people is going to be used in conjunction to try a murder defendant. This is going to be an important trial not just in how justice is served for Angie, but also in how this trial is likely going to be used to frame debate on the Matthew Shepard Act.
