I checked our employee handbook and "Gender Identity" is listed under their nondiscrimination policy... It doesn't mean that they will accept me when I come out but at least I am protected, correct?

Technically yes. Doesn't necessarily mean they will actually do anything unless you take it to court.

It means they can't fire you for being trans. And if I'm not mistaken, if you were to be fired and sue, it is the company's responsibility to prove that you were fired for performance rather than your identity.
Also, if someone were to harass you because of your identity, your company is required to deal with it. That should be covered under sexual harassment.

Thanks Guys! I have been a really great performer since I started with the company in 2004 and I have the performance review to prove it but anyway, I'll find out when I come out this December but I can't let my fear of losing my job stop me from being happy - I have to come out sooner or later...

I guess they can use the recession or any excuse if they want to let me go since my company has an employment at will policy but I'm sure they won't be using because "you-are-trans" reason. Anyway, they have a legal department to think of "legally" letting me go... I'm just hoping that since they have that in the employee handbook that they actually will not discriminate.
