Public defender Annette Kundelius told about 100 potential jurors that Andrade reacted when he learned Zapata had male genitalia.
Zapata was transgender and lived life as a woman.
"When he learned Angie was in fact Justin, he immediately reacted," Kundelius said. "He had been deceived, and he reacted. He reacted, he lost control, he was outside of himself.
"Everything happened so fast, it was over before it started. He couldn't control it. Those are the words you're going to hear from Mr. Andrade. He never knew he had that kind of rage."
