QuoteOMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha couple is allowing their 8-year-old son to openly live life as a girl. It's a decision that means the child is no longer invited to attend Catholic school.

Therapists and the child's parents say the second grade student is transgender, a medical condition where a person's inner sense of identity doesn't match their biological gender. Some gender experts say as many as one in 500 people may be transgender or carry significant traits of the opposite sex.

The uneducated are calling for the child to be made to live as a boy, with the usual arguments.  Please consider signing up and posting a comment (or 2, or 5...) =Karen

I admire the bravery of both the child and the parent is this story.

I wonder what my own life would be like had I came out at that young age.

Quote"Now I can wear nail polish, get rid of all my boy clothes and not worry about that name," the child said.

What a truly beautiful gift to give a child.

I cannot seem to find a link to sign up, else I would leave comments.

Omaha mental health therapist Ellie Hites said she's worked with more than 200 transgendered clients in Omaha over the past 35 years.

Hites said she does psychological evaluations on all of her clients.

"One hundred percent of the time, I've never had anybody show up anything other than healthiest in the chosen gender role, as opposed to biological," Hites said.

This is something that needs to be said by more therapists.  Where else in the mental health world can you find a success rate that even comes close to this?  We try to get everyone to conform to social rules and look at the results, a world filled with unhappy people.

It isn't about changing the brain, it's about social acceptance.

People are different.  And that's okay.

If this kid's parents were forward thinking enough to allow their kid to dress the way they identify, you'd think they'd be smart enough to also shelter their child from the freaking media.

I think it is great that more parents are accepting their children being transgender. Our society is still moving slowly but at least it is moving. I wish American culture would actually live true to its cliché of the "pursuit of happiness" where if someone is doing something that truly makes them happy but is not harming anybody, not only do they have the right to do that it is also up to nobody else to question. The child wants to be a girl and if that is what makes her happy, then society should stay out of the kid's business. As to someone's comment about the media, I am always skeptical of the media but in some cases such as this article it can give us positive exposure.

Judging by the few comments I read, my response would be like pissing on a house fire. These people already have their minds--what there is of them--made up.

For once I agree with Mister.
She is going to have a tough enough time without the sickies and comic book magazines following her life.
But good luck to her and her parents. Wish mine would have done so. I'd even have posed for the magazines.

I hope the family has found and become part of Trans Youth Family Alliance (http://www.imatyfa.org/).

Kim is an absolutely great person and a number of families and parents I have contact with across the country are. Parents and families have a great resource possibility for aid, comfort and society in this org.

As for commentary on the article, I rather think Arch is right.

Marvelous! like Kim Petras.  The younger a person starts in this journey the better.

Good on the parents and the little girl  :-* :-*
:'( I only wished my parents understood it more when I was a little boy.
As the number of time I got court CDing by my parents at a young age and told by them I was some sick little kid and locked in my bed room with no dinner. Now look at me  living my as who I am meant to be Wendy
