Title: Your plan
Post by: cindianna_jones on September 08, 2006, 06:24:35 AM
For us MTF's, one of the things that we sorely lack is an exercise plan.

Your body has been on the T for all of your life.  As you begin HRT, the new hormones will begin to redistribute and add fat.  For many of us this is important to help develop feminine traits.  But the hormones don't quit!  It will only worsen after GRS.

I've known many MTF's that gain significant weight after surgery. In my family, women are predisposed to carry more weight than typical females. And my body really wants to carry on that family tradition. We are spending thousands of dollars on therapy, medication, electrolosys, and surgeries.  Why would we no make the investment in an exercise program?  This is the hardest, because it doesn't cost money.  It requires a comitment and a little time each day.  We all know that exercise is important. But do you have a "program"?  Do you have a "plan"?

I hate machines.  And due to some physical problems I have, I can not participate in sports.  I'm prety much limited to walking.  Fortunately, I love to walk, and I love to walk in the area where I live. It is pretty and there isn't much traffic.  The problem for me is that walking is a very slow way to get the heart rate up and maintained for a reasonable period.  So I must walk for at least one hour each day to get the benefits of exercise.  I do some simple stretching exercises before my walks which are important for many reasons.

So that's my program.  Do I keep to it?  Hah?  You got me ;) I need to get back to it.  With hot weather, I have to do it before the sun comes up.  So I've been off it for a couple weeks cause I've been on a tight schedule and I've been working during those hours.  I find that I do better when I keep a calendar with all the things that I should do for myself every day.  And I check them off.  This helps motivate me and keep myself honest.

So what is your exercise program?  Are you keeping with it?  If you are one of those that can do it every day, what do you do for motivation?

Well due to my social disability (genuine homophobia - the fear of PEOPLE, not just men!), I find going out in public a great problem. :(

Normally though, if given a nice quiet night I can be found on my bicycle just cruising around the neighbourhood. Yeah, I know it is not much and certainly not enough for MY tastes but at least it is a start!

Hey Cindy...

I swim twice a day, morning and night....

I play netball on Tuesdays and Sundays and softball on Wednesdays and Fridays....

I guess I keep pretty fit, just the age is creeping up on me.

Somedays the mid is willing, the body, just don't want to know.

Hi Cindi!

I'm a running fanatic but it was so hot in July up here I was a little lax on my running for around a month.
I usually run about 55 miles a week to maintain a siz 12. I always have a fear though about losing all of my weight and having no boobs left!!! ;) :o So if I see myself losing too much weight I simply run less and eat more to gain some weight back. I usually float between a 12 and 14. :)

Do I exercise?  Not nearly as much as I need to.

My knees don't like running.  But climbing stairs or running up an incline I can manage for a half hour.  And I can use one of those 'elliptical' machines.

So on Sundays, I do a 6-story parking structure at the local college campus -- one run up the ramp inside follwed by two ascents of the staircase, repeated four times.  Wednesdays, I take advantage of my free membership at the base fitness center and program the elliptical for 35 minutes, [current weight], and age 14 (I'm approaching the big five-oh) -- my heart rate has to be on the high side of the 'target heart rate' curve to get any benefit

I wish I had time to do more.  Bicycling long distances is too discomforting now (neck & shoulders), so I'm thinking a recumbent model may be in my future.  I like to hike.  Give me a trail that goes up and I'll follow it, but a good hike takes a day and a half to plan/prep/do/recover.

I just got my HRT scripts yesterday and I'm worried about the potential weight gain (why can't I just keep the weight I have - it's MORE than enough - and just have it move around a bit?).  I bought a used bike a few weeks ago, I used to walk but my knees began to sing so loudly afterwards I had to give it up.  I don't ride as much as I should and now I get pains in the groin muscle after I ride.  My sister is quite large, just like my paternal grandmother - I hope I'm not in for that much gain, fer sure!

I wonder if the cholesterol med (Lipitor) is giving me the muscle probs.  So, I have a bicycle but no plan  :(  The hills in this town make bike riding tough on beginners too.

Cindi  I'm sorry for going off topic for a bit here but I'd like to share something with Helen if I may.

Helen  atorvastatin can sometimes cause muscle problems such as pain, weakness, and tenderness on some people, so make sure to tell your doctor as soon as you can, please! :)
