Title: Something new to talk about
Post by: cindianna_jones on September 08, 2006, 10:35:22 AM
Other than personal relationships, what is the most enjoyable activity you love to do in your preferred gender?

For me, it's an afternoon in the salon having my hair done.  I don't spring for it often.  But a couple of times a year, it is heaven having someone dote on me like that.

For me in the following order it's:

1. shopping,
2. a trip to the salon,
3. then it's horse back riding.

It's a really great day when I'm able to include all in the same day which happens from time to time.  While I love the outdoors, kayaking and canoeing etc. my real weakness is shopping.  I'm embarrassed to say that I have cloths in my closets (yes closets) that still have their tags on from last year.

But what the heck, I love doing it. :)

I will add "not shopping" to my list of preferred activities, just under "not ironing" and "not moving".

Dennis, you cracked me up!  You know it is funny, but I have disdain for mall shopping.   You know, I can't drag Brick into the hardware store.  It's not that he minds going in, but he really hates pulling me out ;)

Muscle cars.  1972 was a good year for Oldsmobile Cutlass, and the 442, Chevy Chevelle, Corvette Stingray, and the Pontiac Firebird. I had 3 0f the 4 of these cars. Wish I had them now! $$$$$$$

I was thinking about what my answer would be and I realized that I have no answer.

I mean, I know I'm pretty much a homebody but when I thought about it I found that I don't do anything.

My life consists of getting up, doing household chores, chatting on the computer, cooking dinner for the family, maybe watch some TV and then go to bed....repeat...

I live fulltime as a woman and I guess I just have a boring life.  With the exception of the bi-weekly grocery shopping trip I don't go out.  We occasionally go down to the nature park and walk when the weather is nice but that's it.  I don't do anything that would be gender specific.  I've never been to a salon or for that matter ever done anything "girly".

Money is probably the biggest reasoning factor...better to keep the power on than go out I guess.

Meh...how sad is that? LOL   :-\

So far all I've done in my preffered gender is sit slouched, with my legs splayed out, looking like a sullen 15-year-old.  But I had a blast doing it.

Mikko, I can just imagine you in baggy jeans, backwards baseball cap, slouching on a sofa with a hand in your pocket saying "Sup?" :D

Heh, they're not that baggy and I don't own a hat...  I've got more of an emo/metro look I guess.  But, man!  It felt good to go out in public in boy mode, it's still so new and makes me feel a whole lot less self-critical cuz no one will care if I don't smile and look friendly like you're supposed to if you're a girl...  Not that I pass at all, but it's cool :D

I'm still in the stage where you get a thrill going outside to get the mail dressed, so EVERYTHING is my favorite thing to do :D

Soccer. And boxing. And checking out cute chicks. And cars, yes, Marco. 1969 Pontiac Firebird is my favorite. Oh yeah, and then there's the requisite sitting with legs splayed. I do have baggy jeans, and I do have baseball caps, and I do love wearing them... but you know what I realize? I did all the same stuff when supposedly living as a female, and I do it now. I guess the only difference now is that it's slightly more socially acceptable.

If even remotely possible I would be kicked back on the beach.  I love to sit and stare out into the ocean.  Eventually I see the dolphins jumping and playing as they swim by.  Maybe one day I'll be able to make the beach my permanent residence since my heart already lives there.

I'm with Mikko on that. Having had chest surgery, I can add in hanging out shirtless, in my boxers, with a beer in my hand, belching as appropriate. I still don't like watching any sports but tennis though and that just doesn't fit with the boxers/beer/belching.

I think that's part of it.  I think what is meant by male priviledge, is essentially not being treated like you're stupid regardless of how smart you are.  However, I think in order to "hang with the guys", you generally need to like sports.

My bf is a guy who never liked watching sports, and guys still respect him.  Granted, they mostly thought he was gay before he had me on his arm everywhere, but I *am* gay, so that's fine :)

When I watched football with my dad and brother I was always looking at the skinny ones' butts :P  Those pants they wear are quite flattering.

um... no, basketball is definitely NOT just for people who like staring at guys' armpits. Being a Hoosier (from Indiana), I grew up on basketball, and I catch a Pacers' game on TV any time I have the chance. I've only been to a few live games, but that's the result of 1) only having lived in Indiana again just recently, and for a short time, and 2) having no money. Live games are awesome! And... tennis? Well, to each his (or her) own.

Ignorance allows contempt,

I would bet there isn't one person here that could drive a stock car 5 laps without being out of breath and their arms burning.  These comments remind me of transsexual jokes by people who have no clue as to what transsexual means. Researching that and the fan demographic might be the thing to do.

Beth, I bet you're right about not one person being able to do that.  I'm sure it takes a lot of skill.  It is a sport and it does take practice to become good at it like any other sport.  What I posted was something I had found on the internet before, but I'd be happy to remove it if you find it offensive.

I didn't find it offensive at all, just ill informed.  Motor sports take way more strength and conditioning then people realize, not just skill.  Nascar events draw hundreds of thousands of people a year in New Hampshire, California, Michigan, Delaware and many other places.  I was just trying to make people think about their sterotyping. No offense taken.

I'd imagine it would take that.  I mean you're driving a car at around 200 miles an hour and weaving around a bunch of other cars going at that speed.  1 tiny mistake could be disasterous.  You would need to learn how to take precautions in order to avoid these tiny mistakes.

Personally, I' not a racing fan (although I loved the cartoon speed racer) and I don't know anybody who is, and I'm not sure about the origin of the basis of the joke, but I would venture a guess that there a lot higher concentration of nascar fans in the midwest or other typically "redneck" areas.

By the way, the term redneck was originally referring to pickup truck drivers, because the sun could shine through the back window and cause a sunburn on the back of their neck, whereas with a regular car that didn't happen.  People eventually involved this into a stereotype.

Melissa
Title: Re: Something new to talk about
Post by: BrandiOK on September 13, 2006, 12:10:35 PM
Actually the term "redneck" was around long before pickup trucks.  Back when all crops were planted/tended/harvested manually by people they spent much of thier time bent over the fields with thier neck exposed.  These people were often identified and looked down upon by others who didn't work the fields.  The negative "stereotype" attached to "redneck" stuck and has been with us since.  It's unfortunate that a name that should, if anything, be associated with hard work, courage and honor be accepted now for what it is.  Of course without those symantics there would be a lot of funny comedians scrambling for material.  Let's face it...it's just not funny when you say "If mow you your yard and find a car....you might be somebody associated with living in the south"   :P

P.S.  Sports don't make the man.....I've known many MANLY men who weren't interested in sports.  Just another stereotype busted there.  Of course men often pretend they are interested because you can't tell who's interested in the game and who's faking it.  I'm depending on you FtM guys to finally break the cycle ...LOL

I do find parts of that article offensive. They article states it is a term similar to the "N" word but if you compare the two articles they are treated differently.  I don't think listing all the stereotypes of a redneck is helpful to anyone.   I would classify those that use the term in a derogatory way are the ignorant group, rather than the group they think they are defining.

The term is really more comparable to ->-bleeped-<- or drag queen. It is used for humor by a majority of people without any condemnation.  I know southern comics have made their fortune using it but that in no way diminishes the fact that it is an ignorant stereotype.

Yeah, that is a pretty interesting read.  Based on what I read, it actually sounds like rednecks would be more accepting of transsexuals, than the major conservative christian population.  Maybe we should embrace our rednecks of this country. ;)

OH MY GOSH! I'm a redneck. Thats where my ancesters are from Scotland and Ireland.  No wonder I don't get along with some of my family. I have redneck blood running through my veins. I do have a 4x4 toyota truck. I don't have the confederate flag though, I've got butterflies in my window. My truck is clean and free from dents and it is a pretty periwinkle. I have tinkerbell flying from my rear veiw mirror and not a gun in the back window. What happened to me? I don't care for the jokes you are a redneck if -----. I do have bears all around my home and they are called Teddy Bears. I don't eat that much meat, in fact I really don't like meat. I try to keep my pants up so as to make sure that people don't think I'm a plumber. I have all my front teeth but I have a few missing in the back, I hope that doesn't count. If my ancestors can see me now. I guess they are all rolling over in their graves.

I am still very new to understanding being transgender and in the closet so to speak so about my only item would be taking a long bath and using a beauty stone on my feet. (pretty boring I guess)

I do have a 1984 Firebird my son built for me. It has a 350 v8 from a police car and a Vette 5-speed. It's kinda fast. If I transition in the future I may see if my son will put a "trans" am front clip on it for me just to personalize it a bit.
