My all time favorite rock band was Uriah Heep. I don't know how many people have heard of them but outside my circle, growing up, it seemed hardly anyone knew them.

I've actually heard of the revolting cocks. Couldn't name a song they did, but I've heard of them. :P
LordKat - I was once talking to a guy who teched for Moby Grape. He said the drummer was so wild when he played (and probably stoned out of his gourd, as well) that they actually had to install a seat belt on his throne so he wouldn't fall off. :D (I think it was Moby Grape. It was one of those 60's psychedelic bands, anyway.)

I've heard of most of those, but Moby Grape, Revolting Cocks, Uriah Heap, Def Leppard, and Holly Near are all pretty well known acts. MG and Holly are very, very well known. Holly Near kept Olivia Records in biz for years just because she sold so well.
But I'd say, this week, its Janelle Monae. You're going to hear from here, and about her real soon.

The Residents are well known in some circles - the point of all this is really to demonstrate how much 'narrowcasting' as opposed to 'broadcasting' has taken over the industry and how people can settle on something, no matter what it is, and not ever have to listen to anything else.

Thou shouldst look them up on ye olde google then mate. I'm sure you would like some of it, they had a unique deal going down and it just was not related to selling CD.
But I always liked:
THE THIRD REICH 'N' ROLL - 76 I think
Santa Dog - 1972 - one of the best punk singles ever, way ahead of its time
George and James - 84
Wormwood: Curious Stories from the Bible – 1998
They did a pile of records, and some of them were very good, lots of other 'projects' also. And everyone still swears that no one knows who they really are.

It's probably partly because my whole school is in love with rap music and not much else (Rap is the ONLY type of music I don't like >.<). So the music I listen to is pretty alien in my school, including Dragonforce.

Yeah I can see that. Most of the people I know in my age range have less than zero idea of most of the bands I work with, but they know like Tom Jones. But if your favorite band is selling as much as Tom Jones, then they are doing OK.

The Wonzers.
I know no one has ever heard of them, save their mom. They broke up, on stage, during a show I was running. Have to say its been one of the highlights of my career. I mean you hear about that kind of stuff, but to be there, on the side of the stage when they do it - well it's pretty spectacular.

not bands but I'm really into glitch which is like a cross between drum n bass and dubstep with a little hip hop influence. some artists I like - edIT, boreta, dj ooah, kraddy, bassnectar, vibesquad, krafty kuts. also I like a lot of minimal techno like trentemoller, ellen allien, apparat, tipper. but then again most people I know aren't really into electronic music so that might be why I don't know anyone who's heard of them.
to the person who said lacuna coil - check out kidneythieves, I think they have a pretty similar sound and they're pretty dank. a lot of the bands mentioned here I haven't heard of though

you guys won't have heard of them
Orbis
Sedition
Metalurgy
The Kidney Thieves
The Dead
Alchemist
Sakkuth
1989
actually there's on that maybe fits the question better:
Die Krupps
I should really read some german history to get what their lyrics are about, i speak a moderate amout of german so i get a fair few of the actual words, but all i know about the history i know from Laibach (actually that's another good one for the list) and movies

Droagoforce aren't that obscure, at least not among metal-heads, can't say i like them much though. They seem to confuse souding impressive with sounding good, all they do is play stupidly fast, i think they need chipmunk vocals to match. No way i could play like that, but i don't think i'd want to.
But hey -if you like them good for you, you'd probably hate a fair bit of what i like.

Well a local band that I like is Bobnoxious. Very cool stuff, especially the holiday songs :D
But the one that I don't think many people have heard about yet, and I think should know about, is "Them Crooked Vultures". They haven't released anything yet but it's gonna be great when they do. The band consists of Josh Homme on vocals and guitar (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl on drums (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and John Paul Jones on Bass (Led Zeppelin!!)
This is all that we've seen from them aside from 14 second viral videos from small shows in Europe.
Nobody Loves Me And Neither Do I (Studio) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYYdli0P8YI#ws-vhq)

"Get Well Soon" a German Band with solid if eclectic musical roots starting to make waves in Europe. No pun intended. ;)

Debora Iyall is a goddess to me, I loved them, Never Say Never is one of my all time favorite songs, so creepy. And if we're going to fish from that pond, how 'bout Pearl Harbor and the Explosions.
I might like you better if we slept together.
If time itself was his demeanor
There'd be no sunlight or a glimmer
Of sunlight landin on the street
Sunsuit girls must be discreet
Sunsuit girls must be discreet
Nursing their fathers locked inside
They masqueraded as his bride
I might like you better
If we slept together
But there's somethin
In your eyes that says
Maybe that's never
Never say never
The slump by the courthouse
With windburn skin
That man could give a <not allowed>
About the grin on your face
As you walk by, randy as a goat
He's sleepin on papers
When he'd be warm in your coat
I might like you better
If we slept together
But there's somethin
In your eyes that says
Maybe that's never
Never say never
There's no easy way to lose your sight
On the street, on the stairs
Who's on your flight
Old couple walks by, as ugly as sin
But he's got her and she's got him
Never say never
I might like you better if we slept together.

I'm not surprised you're a Debora Iyall/Romeo Void fan. But if this thread was called "Your favorite bands that Tekla has never heard of," there'd be very few posts indeed.

I loved a band around that time called Translator, they were out of LA, did a song called Everywhere That I'm Not. Other good ones too.
And where you live has a lot to do with it, growing up and living in SF and the Bay Area you get a lot more exposure to that stuff, than you would in other places - or if you were in New York, you'd have a whole bunch of other bands that were good, but never really made it out of the region.

Both Split Enz and Fleet Foxes have done moderately well, Split Enz was popular for a week or two back in the Eighties - they seemed to shift generas a lot, which always confuses fans, but I think the two brothers from there Tim Finn and Neil Finn are still touring and selling like 2K tickets in major markets. And their record True Colors did OK, back in 80 or so.
And I thought - ok, I know - that the Fleet Foxes LP/CD/recording release last year was on everyone's short list for LP/CD/recording release of the year, and they are selling out shows all over with the kind of Alt-hippie-folk-country types who like My Morning Jacket a la Bob Dylan. They are about to 'do' Europe including a gig at the Isle of Wight fest deal, which is pretty big.
What Fleet Foxes did - other than being one more 'indy' band out of Seattle - was get huge exposure from their MySpace/Facebook whatever site. That really gave them a big boost. But it tends to be the under 30 somes who know all that stuff.

I'd mention Dissonance and the Enharmonic Whiteboys (formerly known as Buster Heilman and the Penetrators), but I get the impression that mentioning bands made up of my old high school classmates doesn't really count.

Mr. Bungle was the popular band made up of fellow students at my high school. They did release a few albums and the lead singer was in another band that was popular for a few minutes (Faith no More).

Ra Ra Riot is new to me...they're touring with the Killers, so I suppose they can't be that obscure, although I'm the only person I know that listens to them.
Also, I get to see Unknown Hinson this weekend! He's pretty spectacular, if you like really offbeat musical humor. He also voices "Early" on the Squidbillies.

Mister Bungle was my older kids favorite band for a while.
Check out this girl, I think she was a guard on Rikers Island in NY before she joined the group.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - "Let Them Knock" - Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0iGhFwZx6c#)
They are called Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (or the 'terrorist fist bumb kings' for you Fox News people).
She's not just a performer, she's a force of nature. Lots of vids on Utube.

Mine aren't really that obscure, but these are the ones I like that nobody I come across usually knows:
Splashdown
Supreme Beings of Leisure
Casey Stratton
Devin Townsend
The Divine Comedy
Splashdown is my favorite of all these. They were an electropop/rock band with a quirky-cute lead songstress. They recorded and played live in the late 90's but didn't sell many records. I recall rumors of a massive label dispute. I collected all their music after I heard Karma Slave from the Titan A.E. Soundtrack. They split up and now do solo projects (i.e. Universal Hall Pass, Symbion Project) that are sometimes fun, but don't scratch the same itch.
I know Devin isn't that obscure, but for some reason I haven't met anyone (i.e. face to face) in years who has heard of him. He's done voices on Metalocalypse, so someone else out there has to be listening to his albums.
Also, I liked a band for awhile called Groovelily after I saw them live, but I've found their actual records to be a little dull. They feature a lot of electric violin, and the instrument isn't nearly as cool on record as it is in person. I have yet to run into someone who has heard of them.

That'd be Denmark.
Usually when I ask people about Meat Loaf, they go "Who?" "Yeah, hmm, I think I've heard about them." "Anything for love, that was them?"
Meat Loaf is a person, people.
And I guess The Cure is a bit too old for people my age (1987), as are Culture Club and Blue Oyster Cult.
Everyone knows "Pretty Fly for a White Guy", but that's it. Nothing else by The Offspring.
Eels, nobody has a clue. They've heard "My Beloved Monster" when they watched Shrek, but not one person I've asked could tell me what band made it...
Oh, a few more that nobody's ever heard of.

Syd Barrett, like the guy who founded The Pink Floyd? That Sid? Yeah, no one knows him at all. Group he started, no one ever heard of them.
And the Offspring sold a pile of records back in the last century, enough to keep their founder going to his concerts by flying his own Gulfstream. Yeah, no one ever bought that stuff either.

Hi all, there are a few names her that ring a bell, I am surprised anyone overseas had ever heard of The Swingers. Lena Luvich was just very, very weird!Cat Empire are great.
I can go way back- Master's Apprentices, Max Merrit and the Meteors, JoJo Zep and the Falcons, Goanna Band, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, The Loved Ones, Tamam Shud, Tully, Chain.
More currently- Butterfingers(hip-hop with a sense of humour), John Butler Trio, Wolfstone, DIG, Tame Impala.

Honestly no, some people that consider themselves pink floyd fans don't even know him. They'd be damned if there was anything before Darkside of the Moon. How many people really own The Madcap Laughs or even Piper at the Gates of Dawn for that matter?

Madcap Laughs is pretty good proof that Syd wound up being where he was supposed to be - Piper* on the other hand is consisted on the first true psychedelic records and Intesteller Overdive one of the early Floyd theme songs, while Astronomy Domine was played through out their career and See Emily Play was a charting hit 45, at least in England.
*Piper at the Gates of Dawn, is also a record by Van Morrison, (totally different material) the name comes from The Wind in the Willows.
/yes I have both records
//no, I never listen to Madcap, but PatGoD has aged very well.

EOTS is good stuff :)
I saw Stardeath and the White Dwarves as one of the opening acts for the Flaming Lips. it's Wayne's nephew. the flaming lips/stardeath collaboration on the cover of madonna's borderline is awesome!

I'm just wondering at what point does 'not heard of' transform into 'heard of'? Is it with air play, or ticket sales? TLG has sold back to back nights at the Fillmore, so that's 2K+ tickets, so someone has heard of them.

Kind of a slow song for Flogging Molly (who, BTW, sells out 2000+ tickets a night for performances in large markets), I think these is more representative of the Flogging Molly shows I've been at. I always thought FM was a bit better live then their arch rivals The Dropkick Murphy's, but they both pale in comparison to their inspiration, The Pogues. - at least when Shane isn't too drunk.

Yeah, but you'd hate someone to show up at one of there shows expecting all them Irish type ballads only to find themselves in the middle of a (very) drunken mosh pit.

When I was a kid, we didn't have mosh pits. We were slam-dancing.
And we were thankful to do it!

Iron Maiden is pretty popular too. Enough to see lots of teens wearing their shirts.
But then, Metal hasn't exactly been mainstream for a long time.

We do at least one metal show a week between the two venues. Matter of fact the day after T-giving I'm doing Hatebreed/Trivum/Canibal Corpse/Unearth/Dirge Within and 4 other bands, that's 9 metal bands on the same bill. Sold Out. Heaven and Hell, sold out. Motorhead, sold out.
Actually most metal bands do a good job of keeping the ticket prices low (they don't need to buy any more than the 3 chords they know, so it keeps costs down) which keeps the people coming. We have a full time metal club in town too.

I don't doubt that at all. It's just not something that's played much on the radio anymore, and if it is it's a select few that cater to the current fad. At least what from the radio stations I've heard in North America.
But yeah, Metal shows are usually pretty cheap and I'm glad for that. I'm going to see Hammerfall(come to think of it, I don't hear many North American metalheads talk about them) in March and it's 25$ Canadian, which is kind of on the pricey side for a Power Metal band, but cheap enough that I don't really care.
