"Ohio schools were not a safe place for many LGBT secondary students," says a research brief released by the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network on June 17.

The study, which surveyed 244 high school students in Ohio and 6,209 nationally, is a follow-up to the 2007 National School Climate Survey, which came to similar conclusions.

In Ohio, the study concludes, LGBT students still lack access to important school resources such as gay-straight alliances, and are not protected by comprehensive school anti-harassment policies.

hell, i could have told you this!!! where i went to high school, you were lucky not to have your ass kicked for just being you, it had nothing to do with LGBT kids. it was ok if you were a lesbian, but if you were anything else, you had better keep it so far hidden in the closet it isn't funny. and nothinh has changed. little children at my daughter's elementary school still yell homosexual slurs at other children.....and we all know why.

I was bullied in school because I was seen as being gay.  And when I fought back or complained to the staff, I got punished.  So I just shut up and endured it through out school.

Bullying in any fashion, for any reason, is just not acceptable.  It should be cause for immediate expulsion.  And continued bullying should be cause for charges being brought forth.

Teaching and training bullies just doesn't work.  It becomes a means of a joke to them.  Punishment needs to be swift and sure.

Never went to Ohio but bullies are the same everywhere. Two fights showed that I would not back down from anyone and that helped. Then I hit the weights and lost my femme frame, became a loner, and somehow ended up with a badass reputation which was pretty far from the truth but eh, it kept everyone away from me.
