Title: Homemade dog food
Post by: Mister on July 04, 2009, 02:03:11 AM
Does anyone here do it?  I'm getting a dog in the next couple of days and am looking into food options.  I'm torn between the frozen raw foods (primal, mostly) and making my own.

It doesn't matter nearly as much as people think, but you can pretty much replicate store bought dog food with kibble and gravy.

Have you ever read the ingredients on a bag of pedigree or even iams v. something like primal?  Sorry, I don't believe in feeding my animals crappy food.

And most vets will tell you that they're fine and healthy for your dog to eat.

If you want to feed your dog primal then go for it. It seems you've already got an idea of what you want to do.

Yep, which is why I asked if anyone here made their own dog food, not who dumps ol' roy into a bowl.

For the record, it was advice that was given to me from someone who does prefer to make their own dog food. :P

We used to have two great dogs, sadly passed away.
We were into making our own food for them. We would but kangaroo mince etc from the pet shops and mix with cooked vegies. But after a while it was a heap of work, and the more meat the dogs got the smellier the end product :embarrassed:. So we went into commercial dry food which they took to straight away. We would also buy bones from the butcher to keep the teeth and gums healthy. They seemed as healthy on the dried food as on meat etc. No science just their attitude and general well being. One was a collie (Lassie type) the other a small Heinz 57 terrier.

Kangaroo?  Not sure I could find that here.  Not sure I'd want to try.

Dog-to-be is only 8.5 lbs, so I figure making food for a week or two and freezing it should be pretty easy.

Before we go killing bouncy creatures, I'll wait for Amazon to send me my book of canine cuisine.

What about meat scraps from a slaughter house? I'm actually clueless to tell the truth. last dog I had was a Chiwawa about 17 years ago. fed him table scraps against better advise. I swear that dog would still be alive if he had not got hit by a car.

Cami, there's a few books that are all dog-friendly meals.  A buddy of mine makes these balls of hamburger, sweet potato and a few other things.  He's currently fostering dog-to-be and she's loving the fresh food, so I figured I'd try to keep it up.

I've actually been thinking about volunteering at our local pet refuge... I may have to look into that.

Dog-to-be is from a rescue that takes dogs in on the day they're going to be killed in shelters.  There's a shelter in Bakersfield that only holds owner surrenders for 48 hours before they're put down.

Aww, thanks.  This'll be my 3rd shelter dog.  I can't stand paying hundreds of dollars for a dog from a breeder or pet store.  I'll post some photos of her next week.. she's freaking adorable and sweet as hell.  I've had nothing but luck with shelter pups.

I actually saved my two kitties from the street. some one dropped them off outside the factory I worked at last winter... they were sooooo tinny! I just had to take them home. If i ever do get another dog it will be from a shelter too.

Then you are now one of *my* favorite people.

My girlfriend volunteers at the SPCA socializing cats.  She has to stop by my place to shower and change on her way home or her cat (also a rescue) gets pissed.

It's actually quite "OK" if someone chooses to eat food made from dogs.  It's just not traditional in the West.

I feed my dog homemade food all of the time.  Usually he gets boiled chicken or beef with rice, carrots, and celery.  Sometimes steak, pork, or hamburger meat if that is what I am having for dinner, and lamb for Easter.  He is nice and healthy.

My grandfather used to make stew for his dogs. I'm not sure how biologically correct his approach was, but he basically wouldn't feed his dog anything he himself wouldn't eat.

Congrats Mister.

All my pets have either been street strays, shelter, or low cost out of the paper varieties.

The two posts previous too mind are among the best advice your going to find.

Just don't spice her food up the way you would yours. For instance... while baking chicken for dinner hold back a small porion and bake it plain for doggie. We humans should either eat our veggies either raw or steamed, same goes for your dog.

Among the reasons why humans and dogs have been side by side for close to 20,000 years, are diets are almost identical to one anothers.

My basset hound growing up was referred to as the "living garbage disposal" post dinner time. I miss my hound dog.

Happy times with yours Mister.

My Cocker Spaniel is a rescued dog also. He use to cower allot when I first got him four years ago. Now people comment on what a friendly and happy dog he is. I mix part of my dinner (fresh cooked) with some dry food. He's healthy and strong as an ox for a little guy

A friend of mine cooks for his dogs every night.  Sometimes it is what he is going to have and sometimes it is special.  But they get no spices at all.  Not even salt.   Meats, rice, veggies.  They like lamb the best but he is like me and can't stand the smell of cooked lamb.  So they only get it on special occasions.  Chicken, pork and steak mostly, and always well done.  Nothing raw at all.  And never hamburger, because it isn't good for them.  His opinion not mine.
