Title: Did you alter your surname at all?
Post by: Nero on July 26, 2009, 03:03:45 PM
Hey guys and dolls.

Did you alter your surname in anyway?  Change the spelling or rearrange the prefix/suffix/sound? Or change your surname completely?
What were your reasons for changing or keeping your surname? Was stealth a consideration?
Thanks.

No, I did not change it.  My surname is part of my Mexican heritage and I could not bear to part with my roots.  I do not care about being stealth.  I like my unique first and last name.  They are still believable, but more ethnic, and I like that.  I did change my first name, though.  But I feel like my last name is a part of my identity and I would feel phony and not myself if it was switched.

I'm proud of my family and of my accomplishments under my own surname.  I basically kept the name I was given, just masculinized it.  Works for me.

I am changing my name soon, but I'm leaving my last name as it is, just changing first and middle names.

I changed everything.  Surname was out of respect for my parents and i just did not care to have it anymore.  Being adopted I could have any name I wished.

From German, which I am not, to Irish, which I am.

I changed all three but kept the initials.

Last name belonged to someone else anyway, it was never mine.

I adopted my great-great-grandmother's maiden name years and years ago because A) It's a cool name and B) I was really, really tired of people mis-pronouncing my birth name.  However, when I have my name changed for transition purposes, only my first and middle will be changing.

My last name is french, and my family stopped pronouncing it as such a couple of generations ago. I started again. Sometimes I forget, heh, but after almost 2 years I usually say it properly.

My name sounds so alien to me now anyway that I don't think much of it these days, but I think it's more interesting pronounced properly. What kills me is that no one would say it the way my family did... until I started saying it the right way. Now about half the time people say what my parents would say.

I have not changed my first name yet.

I'm Icelandic, I'm changing my surname from "Jónsdóttir" (Daughter of Jón) to "Jónsson" (Son of Jón).

I'm still a member of the family, so no need or desire to change the surname.

Me too.  After all, I'm still the same person, just happier and finally fully me.

Same with me.  I did not have a problem with my surname.  Only my given names really bothered me.

That got fixed along with everything else.

I'll be changing the first, last, and (most likely) dropping the middle entirely... but not for the reasons most people would think.

Dropping the middle because I consider middle names to be redundant.  I see no point in having a name that I'll never use, and nobody will ever hear or see unless it's some sort of official paperwork.

And the last name? Well, none of my family share a last name, not with each other or with me . I see no reason to hang on to it when I'd prefer something else.

The first and last name I'll be changing to were something I picked about 10 years ago, and have no relation whatsoever to my birth name (either of them). I've always loved the name and always wanted it for myself.

So yeah, it's changing - but not over family ties, and not over stealth.

Changing the last name does not make sense to me. Honestly if it wasn't for my middle name being feminine id just keep my name because my first name is unisex.

I plan on taking my mothers maiden name.
I'm much closer to my mom's side of the family and considered doing it years ago so this is a good time to do it. I figure it will help if I do decide to go stealth.

Yes, I plan to change my name completely when I get around to it. Partly as a way of disassociating myself from my family and also as a way of declaring who I really am.

Took my middle name and used it as my last name.
My original last name was constantly mis-spelled and mis-pronounced.

First name I started using at seven years old when I was asked at (boy only) school what my name was. Life at school went down the drain from that day

The first day of kindergarten, I was asked what my name was. I told them it was Danger Mouse. I even went to the trouble of spelling it for them .

At the time of my legal name change I did change my first and middle
name to the those that my Mama renamed me with but not my surname.
Now because of the information that my father (dead now, lucky him)
took a swing, at my 5'0''/95lb mother, with a crowbar. I will be
charging it to my mothers maiden name, as she is also.

I changed all 3 of my names. I have been with my partner for 13 years and it looks as though we will still be spending the rest of our lives together. I took her family name. My old family only has a small amount to do with me for years. My new family accepted me from the start and was just as happy when I became Melissa. So I joined them.  :)

Lets see, I've changed my first name, want to change my middle name (havn't decided on one yet), but surname? Nope. I havn't had any reason to at this point and it is a good last name.

My previous initials ironically were M.A.N , not surprisingly I changed all of them.
