Title: Hi to all!
Post by: Rebeestef on July 28, 2009, 09:54:46 PM
My name is Renee and I am a pre-op TS. I have known of your site for some time. After many years I have decided to transition. Tired of wishing, tired of faking. Ready to accept whatever consequences may happen.

I want to make new friends with those with similar needs and hopes. I want to learn from those before me and just maybe find myself through all of you wonderful people!!

I love travel, good restaurants, clothes, shopping and shopping :)  I am single after many failed attempts and intend to stay that will until this journey's end. I am looking forward to being me!

Thanks and I will quit rambling on....

Renee

Hi Renee, :icon_wave:

Welcome to our little family. Over 2900 strong. That would be one heck of a family reunion.

Feel free to post your successes/failures, Hopes/dreams.  Ask questions and seek answers. Give and receive advice.

But remember we are family here, your family now. And it is always nice to have another sister. :icon_hug:

Thanks Janet Lynn.  I appreciate the kind words. Well, I may as well ask a tough one - has anybody on this forum travelled "en femme" and if so how did all the security issues etc go?!
My ID says male, my image does not!

That's about where I got to when I decided to cautiously throw caution to the wind and tranisiton. ;)

I've travelled a bit.  My ID says male but shows my female picture and name.  I haven't had a problem.  But perhaps you mean flying, which I haven't done for years.  I also haven't tried to cross fromn the US into Canada as Katherine.  I haven't changed my passport yet because I'm not planning to go outside the US this year.  (I spent some time north of the border last year, pre-transition.)  I think the passport would be good, though, with a certified copy of my name-change papers from my state.

I have no problem explaining that I am in transition if questioned.  It's happened a couple of times.  I've been matter-of-fact and they've accepted it in a matter-of-fact way.

Again, welcome to Susan's.

Well, I did mean to ask about flying. Can one fly while presenting as female if your official ID says and shows you as female??

Hi Renee

International travel could be a problem, as it my be seen as a disguise. Local travel in Australia, I have male DL but present as female. None of their business as to how I dress and present. Sue the c**p out of them if they did.

Oh and BTW welcome Hon

Cindy

If it is for medical reasons, get a letter from your therapist and/or doctor.  The TSA here will be suspicious but you have an out at that time.

Are you speaking from experience flying with male ID but presenting female?
I really don't care what they think, but sure don't want to end up in some retaining room !!

I know you want one of us to chime in who has flown while in transition.  I haven't, so you can ignore what I have to say.

I've been through a lot of checkpoints in my life.  Go with confidence but not arrogance, be cooperative and willing to explain without drama.  You are who and what you are and there is nothing wrong with that.  You intend no harm, so they aren't looking for you.  You will arouse less suspicion if you are comfortable with youself.

And now we shall wait for someone who has flown in the US during transition... ;)

In the recent past I traveled between the US and Canada on bus and plane.
My passport at that time had a masculine photo and an "M" gender marker but had my correct female name.
I greeted the border agent, handed them the passport and waited patiently.
The only question I got was the purpose and length of my visit.
I told them "medical treatment". That was sufficient.
I did have a state ID that had an "F" gender marker as a trump card, but it was not necessary.
