Title: Estrogen and weight loss?
Post by: Myself on August 03, 2009, 05:18:35 AM
I started estrogen about 2 weeks ago and I am starting to experience quite a weight loss, even if I increase my food intake.

Not that it is a bad thing! I need to drop 10kg at least :(

But usually estrogen is related to weight gain.
The weight loss is about 100-200 grams a day, although lately I ate more than usual and still lost weight or at least didn't gain as I would usually.

Should I ask my doctor about it?
I feel fine, nothing else noticed other than a sudden blessing of weight loss.

Oh! another thing I noticed is that I seem to drink more. although I might be wrong and just think I am.

I am not on spironolactone but on androcur so it is not related to that. I been on androcur much before estrogen, about a year.

I'm not on spiro, so my experience may not be relevant.  I've been on estrogen and a generic anti-androgen for four months and have been able to maintain my weight without gain or loss.  When I asked my doctor about my weight, he asked if I felt OK and shrugged it off when I said I felt fine.

So, my non-medical advise is that if the weight-loss continues to the point where you feel weak or bad, or continues below your normal range, see your doctor.  Until then, don't worry about it.

Drinking more water is rarely a bad thing.  What color is your urine?

I hope you are taking the hormones under the care of a doctor.  If not, by all means see your doctor.

I think anti androgens have a lot to do with weight loss. When I first started aa's I went from 63kg to 60 kg. My endo decreased the dose of aa and I went back up again to 64 kg. Now Im mid dose and Ive dropped to 57 kg. It has to do with diet in the end. Myself I eat a lot more vegetables now and lean meats but I still think the aa's play an important part

Yes, I am under doctor's care.

I said I already been on anti-androgen (Not spiro) for about a year, only thing changed is now they gave me estrogen.

So it's not the AA

AA's play a role, and also you'll lose weight as you lose muscle tone (muscle weighs more than fat). I think a lot of people I know have lost weight when they went onto estrogen. I know I did.

After I had SRS, I ended up gaining some weight, although. LOL

I keep losing weight on hrt (spiro and estradiol) as well, and my E and T levels have been the same as any natal woman's before menopause for a while now. I went on a big diet before I started and lost a lot, a bit too much really. Now everytime I manage to gain a couple pounds back it's gone again within a day or two and I end up weighing less than before. Overall my BMI is on the low end but still within a normal range for my height so no real cause for alarm, yet. I'm really glad to hear that weight loss is not uncommon, because I always heard estrogen makes you gain and was getting a bit worried.

I suspect also that part of it is because for the 10 months I was dieting I developed healthy eating habits and cut most of the fat content completely out, as well as making better meal choices. Maybe I should just eat more chocolate, hehe

Yes it is possible, but you have to try a little harder with the diet and exercise. Most of us gain a few pounds.

I lost 20 pounds in my first little bit on anti androgens. (Attributing to decrease in dense muscle mass.) Once starting estrogen, I began retaining weight while still shedding muscle. It all seems to be normalizing now.

I lost weight for the first year, about 20 - 25 lbs. I also cut out all soda pop and started a low carb diet at the same time. My goal was to lose the belly fat, which I did.

When I switched from pills to injections my appetite went crazy! I've gained back 10lbs and yes, it went to my belly. Seems to have stabilized now though.

I lost 40 lbs.

I worked really hard at it too.  Estrogen is not a magic weight loss hormone.

Estradiol is supposed to help keep weight off the waistline while helping promote fat deposition in typical female areas such as thighs, buttocks, more so when progesterone is added.

That has been my experience.  However, for the fat already on the waistline, it does not make it magically disappear.  It's also is going to be dependent on genetics and body type.  There are plenty of CIS women with generous waistlines.

Early on i saw this and more lately - as i see saw in weight up and down about 5-7 pounds, my belts have continued to get more loose, to the point i needed new ones. You can only cinch so much.
