Title: anyone know a good handout - pamphlet or brochure?
Post by: CharleneT on August 14, 2009, 03:27:33 PM
Hey,

Does anyone know of ( or have ) a decent pamphlet or brochure that explains TS to lay folks in an easy way.  Hopefully fairly short too ?  I'm about to go 24/7 and think it might be handy to have something to give to a acquaintance when they ask questions.

Charlene:

There really isn't a pamphlet or brochure that I've seen that give a point for point quick overview of trans-101.

Your best bet would be to either point them at the wiki here or over at tsroadmap.  Additionally you could print out certain sections from either to create your own brochure.

Also there are several good books that explain being trans from the family/friend/co-worker point of view.  Possibly one of the best is "True Selves" by Brown and Rounsley.

Possibly the reason such have not been created before is that the intended audience could be so wildly different, it would be difficult to put the relevant points into a pamphlet without missing something major.

And really, the best way is to write something yourself.  Prepare for that meeting.  Then write down what you would want to say.  As you may be aware, this is such an internal struggle for us, but people only see the external changes that are driven by those internal demons.  If you write something personal to describe your feelings, people would have a better feeling for your change.

Hi Sandy,

Thank you for the links, I did not know about the tsroadmap place!  I agree about "True Selves" by the way, great book.

My search is for some thing that would work when contacting a person you do not know well.  Not meeting with a friend and explaining to them in a personal way ( I do that and so far it has gone very well).  I'm close to going 24/7 and just trying to be a little prepared.  My experiences so far have been fairly positive - if there was any reaction at all.  Most of the time people just do not react at all to the gender change.  At least in a way that is obvious.  It just seems like in some circumstances, when you see someone you don't know well and they ask about the transition, that it might be handy to have something you can hand them that is short and informative.

{mods, I am sorry this is a cross posting - I'm new here and realized that this forum was much more appropriate for the question.  Go ahead and del if I've broken a rule though!}

Hey,

Thanks for any help !
