The nation's highest court removed some legal barriers confronting transsexuals making the switch from male to female.
The Supreme Court said yesterday that a transsexual is no longer required to complete or be legally exempted from military service to change his sexual affiliation on legal documents.

Oh I can answer that. Military dictatorships, and this is one, want people who are willing to die for them. The US military - and the Brits and their colonies also - want people who want to live. That's why they tend to win, all things being equal. But a dictatorship does not want soldiers in the field who are thinking of something to come back to, which is why they tend to lose.

What has that got to do with changing sex on legal documents?

Since when has South Korea become a military dictatorship? Did the North invade or organised a military coup in Seoul without the US even knowing or intervening?

Why unmarried and childless?
I would assume it might be simply to avoid complications about marital and succession rights

So those who change late in life can not change documents? I guess it still makes no sense. How would it stop your children from inheriting and people marry and divorce throughout transition. So how would the document part change that.
To me not married and childless reeks of Nazi type control over what traits they want bred out of a society.

I agree, hopefully this is only a first step in a gradual change in the law, towards more understanding and acceptance in a still very rigid and conservative society.

Exactly why I don't understand the point. It used to be thought that mentally ill persons would transfer their illness and were rendered sterile to prevent its spread. No longer the case but this feels the same.

Male-turned-female transsexuals will no longer need to fulfill their military service before changing their legal sex in family records.
The Supreme Court said Tuesday that it had revised a regulation on transsexuals' legal sex change approval to delete the clause stipulating that when a man changes his legal sex to female, he should have already fulfilled military service or been exempted from it.
The clause was designed to prevent men from dodging the mandatory service by getting a sex change. Male-turned-female transsexuals, who have not changed their legal sex, used to be exempted from the service due to their ``mental illness.''
