Title: Slash
Post by: Walter on August 20, 2009, 04:47:55 PM
I think I put this in the right place..Not sure >_<

So uhm...for almost a year now I've been trying to get myself to write some fan-fiction. I take an interest in Slash (MalexMale or FemalexFemale relationships) and Yaoi. I like reading others' fan-fiction but some of my favorite pairings are rarely ever heard of or too deviant for anyone to make fan-fiction of them. So since there's none on my favorite pairings I thought of making the fan-fiction myself. I'm too afraid to make any though because I'm not exactly the best at wording things correctly..so if I did write one in might look like an amateur's doing. I really really want to write one though even if it's kinda short. But I don't have the nerve to do it just yet..

So I guess I'm wondering..has anyone else here wrote fan-fiction whether slash or not? Was it hard for you? Any tips on how to write one? I could go on. I guess I'm just looking for what y'all have to say about it

As I understand the term "slash," this refers to fan-fiction of another person's characters, right? Because it seems it is also sometimes used to main fan-fiction based on real people.

While I've delved in fan-fiction, I've never attempted "slash," in either of the forms above. To me, it seemed, well, wrong. I don't mind creating fan-fiction in another's world or universe, but I make only vague and/or passing references to original characters.

Yeah it usually means to someone else's characters. Like movie, anime, cartoon, ect. Though some people with a lot of creativity stick to their own made up characters

I just squee like a fangirl when I think of my two fav video game or movie characters together <3

XD

Nono.

Fan Fiction can and often is about other peoples characters/universe.

"Slash" is a sub-catagory of fan fiction that is specifically about relationships, romantic or sexual - Kirk/Spock, Picard/Dr. Crusher, Angel/Buffy - but usually it involves relationships that were NOT seen on screen (Imagine a story in which Sisko gets horizontal with Janeway for instance)

*suddenly realizes not everyone recognizes Trek references*

anyway, maybe I made sense.

I have not done fan-fic per-se.. but I have written for and been involved with fanzines.

The best advice is to write, Write, and write some more.
Don't worry about style, grammar, or what the audience might think.. just get it out on paper.

Then comes the fun part.. re-write.. edit, make changes.. check your facts.. and then re-write again...

By the time you have re-written it four or five times you are probably close to where you want it to be.
Let some one else read it.   Not someone who will spare your feelings.. but someone that cares that it's good, and who knows the genre and audience..  take their advice, but only as advice.. re-read their comments against your work.. if it makes sense then make changes, if not.. still think about making changes..

Next probably comes another re-write, and then maybe a few more for good measure..   Finally, send it off to a zine publisher or put it out for eyeballs to enjoy.. and wait for the slams.. they will come.. For every good comment will be six or seven who will consider it bird cage liner.. ignore them..  But do look for good solid criticism.. and then..   SEQUIL~!!!!! "muahhhhahhhahhaaaaa!!!!!!!"

And then you is a writer my son..

Have a ball and write, write, write.. :)

Oh, yea.. and maybe look in on a few writing how too books, and books that tell you how to write.. those poor schmucks need the money..  :icon_chainsaw:

(A final note on publishers? Guess what... more re-writes and editing.. but from them it is usually only to make the work better, more readable or fit the issue. They are good sources of advice.. but remember.. your story is your own - not theirs..  Shana)

Thank you for the post, Shana ^___^ It helped :33 It gave me a little boost to try and have fun writing instead of looking at it like a chore

My pleasure good Sir..  glad to be of help.. :)

Let me know where you publish.. I'd live to read it..   Manga is life's blood, Anime it's spark.. and fan-fic it's breath and bone..

I'll let you know, Shana. It will more likely be classified as "Slash" because it's gonna involve two game characters that aren't from a Japanese game (Mortal Kombat)

These two to be exact

http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Quan_Chi (http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Quan_Chi)

Gross pairing but for some reason I think they should've been together in the games X_X

I say go for it.
I myself don't write with other people's characters because I believe its harder to get a feel for who they are and it isn't my material. My original work is close to me and I understand the characters so it is easier. I love them more and have more passion for them as well.
I suppose fan fiction can be difficult because of dilemmas similar to this.

As far as writing skill goes it only improves with writing and reading. I say sit down and just start putting down words. Dont over think it. Jot down what comes to mind. Almost like a stream of consciousness. After that you can do some editing if you want. I suggest handing out a few copies to people and get feed back before refining too much. best way to make sure your good is to work at getting good with your audiences help.

Of course not everyone will appreciate or like your writing, good or bad. peoples tastes are different. Take it with a grain of salt... and write for yourself the artist  :)

Before I put it on a public site I'll let whoever wants to read it, read it. I just dunno who I'm gonna find to read it because....well uhm it's Slash. My brother loves the game those characters come from, but he thinks I'm a lame slashy fangirl and he can't stand Slash so...yeah XD he won't read it (unless by some strange happening that he actually wants to read it o.o then I'll question his sanity)

Last night I had a tablet and pencil in hand..but I couldn't concentrate or think at all so I thought "Eh I'll get to it on a quiet night like tomorrow night or something"

I'm stuck between two stories to write. I could either write that Shinnok x Quan Chi one...or the other one I had in mind

Y'all might know these characters

I wanna do a romance/sex fan-fic of these two..

http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Tron (http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Tron)

http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Sark (http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Sark)

*prepares for people to throw stuff at him* And yeah..the links are correct this time

But yeah...I realized there's only a couple of Tron slash stories out there. And the only one I could find of Tron x Sark was really short. Like no detail *coughs* I dunno why I posted this >__< I'm ranting cuz I dunno which one to try and write first

Hmmm. Well I've never seen Tron, but being a nerd and belonging to an animation school, I have seen clips of it. But I can't really make a judgment on the pairing. But I'm not to judge what someones into unless its morally wrong in my book.
So no trowing objects today. Your in the clear.

I don't know what other advice I can give you... you could probably find a site dedicated to slash comics. Then you can get readers and comments.

But chin up. If you didn't already know. Tron is having a remake very soon in theaters.

Yah I know. I wanna see it but I know it won't be as good as the first >_>

Well I shouldn't say "know". But I doubt it'll be as good as the first

I keep reading stories and watching AMVs on Sonamy. (Sonic the Hedgehog x Amy Rose) >.<

It makes me squeel like a fangirl... which I am, I suppose. o.o

Rawr.

:3

Oh wait, this is supposed to be about same-sex relationships...

I could never get into those... I always found it creepy if the characters are straight...

Slash? I stumbled on a Harry Potter fan fic once. About Snape and Harry, in which Snape had to give it to Harry for his own good. Is that Slash?

Harry Potter slash seems to be popular. I was never into that series though

I'm thinking of reading the book of Tron before I start the Tron x Sark fan-fic. The book might be able to help
