Title: sports
Post by: Ricki on September 30, 2006, 07:51:58 AM
What hapens when one transitions (i guess to what degree tells more physically) from male to female or female to male and grew up enjoying specific hobbies of that sex?  Say football>?  Obvious answer i know is you do not play it with the "guys" What about more unisex sports like swimming, tennis, skiing, climbing, baseball, basketbal, volleyball, etc?
Do you wear a womens outfit or coordinates?  Like instead of a tennis short and shirt a tennis dress??
Well i guess i can only say it the way i'm thinking it... For someone who is not modifying their appearance or body, then wearing womens ski bibs or a womens climbing harness is not "functional" the fact that i would wear a mans outfit or gear is stil not an indicator for me that i am less feminine or female just that i have to wear the appropriate tools for the task?
Does this make sense or do i not have enough coffee in me yet?

I was never into sports but enjoy swimming. When in public I wear shorts and a long t-shirt. In our own pool I wear a 2 piece bikini unless we have company who do not understand then its beach attire again. It's not that I am shy in public but I have not had GRS and well a swim suit of any style is sure to give away certain aspects that don't belong and then I'd have to take up the sport of running which doesn't appeal much to me!!  :D

Transition happens when you decide to live your life as your true gender and make some changes to your appearance to reflect that change, and that includes adopting the gender roles of your true gender as well.  If you are a professional tennis player, I would imagine that you can still play tennis as your true gender after you transition.

QuoteFor someone who is not modifying their appearance or body

Well, this would mean that this person has not transitioned, am I correct?  In this case, I am afraid, such a person would have to abide by the gender roles associated with his/her birth sex if he/she plays any sports professionally.

I was never a sports player, but I did become a women's gymnastics judge when my girls were gymnasts.  I did transition at the beginning of my third season in my new state of Washington.  Of course, I shifted from uniform pants to uniform skirt.  And I judged both as a preop and a postop.

I burned out after 14 years of judging but still love to watch gymnastics at any level.

As Tinkerbell has said, your clothing will change along with your physical change, uless you don't plan on a physical change. At any point in transition depending on who knows you as who you are, or not, play whatever sport you choose.

Thanks for the replies was just curious?
I think actually having thought about it, it can be complicated especially if you grew up hiding things as a lot of us did and conforming to the role your outward appearance dictated?  what an irony society has created huh?  So then you change or reverse some of those things you did due to the changes you make to yourself? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Amazing how outward appearnce can dictate so much on the way society views you and the things around you, and sometimes I am comforted in knowing what i know and not outwardly showing it 100%, I guess!

Don't take my word for it, but I've heard that in order to compete in pro/college sports, you must be tested and prove that your hormone levels match up with that of the gender you identify with. So, for example, a pre-everything MtF would not be able women's sports because she would have an advantage over the other women.
