I saw the recent piece of a self-identified "transdyke feminist and LGBT activist" recently, entitled I'm (Mostly Not) Coming Out. She began her piece with a paragraph describing her initial process of being a visibly out trans woman in a university setting -- going up to professors and outing herself as a trans woman whose legal name and appearance didn't match her embraced gender identity. The story picks up on the beginning of year three of her transition from male-to-female:

Welcome to the reality of how "passing" impacts individuals in the trans community; welcome to the broader concept of how there are individual members of oppressed, minority populations who don't appear to be members of their population(s), and "pass" as members of the unoppressed, majority population.
