Title: Comic Books!

Does anybody here regularly comic books? Do you buy graphic novels, manga, monthlies, or some combination?
I, personally, get mostly monthlies with the occasional graphic novel and even more occasional manga.
The monthlies I get are New Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor (Best writing in comics right now), Transformers (the old designs, not the new ones,) Ultimate Spiderman, Ultimate Avengers, Ultimate Iron Wars, Hellboy, Uncanny X-Men, Aliens, Nick Fury: Agent of Nothing, and Predator. I read my roommate's subscriptions to Deadpool, Punisher, Moonknight, and Freddy vs Jason vs Ash.
My favourite graphic novels are Superman:Red Son, Age of Apocalypse, Transmetropolitan, The Watchmen, and y'know, all those classics.
Manga.... not often at all, but I've got some Berserk, Blood+, and Welcome to the NHK. Oh, and Dr. Slump.

I really enjoyed the graphic novel Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. It's an honest portrayal of her growing up in a family that ran a funeral home.

Manga: No Bra, Her Majesty's Dog, Fushigi Yugi, Absolute Boyfriend, One Thousand and One Nights, Ranma 1/2, Crying Freeman, Bastard!! (yes the double exclamation is part of the proper title :)), High School of the Dead, Naruto, Ah! My Goddess,
Comics: Spider Girl (Have not read recently - they cut her title and moved it into Spider Family compilation :(), Ultimate Spider-man, X-men and Avengers.
Graphic Novels: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Sandman (No! No, it belongs here! Really it does :))

I can't believe I forgot the Sandman! Best comic book series ever! Gave comic books the final legitimization they needed to be an actual form of art.

Well I get the new Alien comics. Working on the 30 Days of Night series (it's pretty good.)
For manga, I've got Death Note, some Shaman King (don't judge) and some Bleach. And I don't buy it but I read Soul Eater.

The Aliens comics have been running so long that Alien3 and Ressurection never happened (YAY!) and the first volume is about what happens to Hicks, Newt, and Ripley after the events of Aliens. For some reason they change Hicks' and Newt's names.
Yeah, DeathNote is the series/manga that got me back into anime after a four year hiatus.

I've got a whole bunch of manga, mainly shoujo... Let's see.
Just looking up, I've got: Otomen, Kashimashi, Cardcaptor Sakura, Kamichama Karin, Chobits, High School Girls, Honey and Clover, Love*Com, Yume Kira Dream Shoppe and a couple of Gundam Seed/Destiny.
At home I've got a bunch more, which I'll do my best to remember: Fruits Basket, Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon (the Japanese reprint), more Gundam stuff, and a year's worth of Shoujo Beat magazines. Possibly some others.
So, yeah. Discounting Chobits, Gundam and possibly High School Girls, entirely too much shoujo. I used to be embarrassed to buy them, but not anymore! ^_^
Semi-coincidentally, Kashimashi and Otomen deal with trans-ish themes (Kashimashi straight out, Otomen's main character is a girly guy with a transsexual father and a mother who really doesn't approve), and I was also surprised to see a T-girl in Love*Com... She's not hidden or anything, but it's a bit of a plot point, so I won't give it away.

I'm an ol DC girl, though I only occasionally get to buy anything nowdays - usually GNs.
I love the Batman titles, and the Bats/Supes team-ups.
I'm also a lifelong Legion of Superheroes fan
Particularly found of the recent Geoff Johns work in that title.
I'd love to consume the whole "Civil War" saga in the marvelverse but I think I'd have to hit the lotto to be able to afford it.

I've never really been into buying the monthly comics, probably because it's not such a big market in DK...but I've taken every opportunity to get them at the library!
Watchmen, Ultimate Spiderman, Uncanny X-men, Transmetropolitan, Red Son, Superman Seasons (I think that's the name), Kingdom Come and everything else I could get my hands on. And Sandman, of course! Much love to Gaiman, I own all of his books (except the graphic novels, they are nowhere to be gotten...)
Manga...hmm!
Naruto, One-Piece, Hellsing, Death Note, Gravitation, Vampire Knight, the Queen's Knight, Basara, Othello, Emma, The Demon Ororon, Nana, Kashimashi, Catwalk, World of the S&M, The Wallflower, Samurai Deeper Kyo, INVU, Her Majesty's Dog, Paris, D.N.Angel, Hack, Bleach, Chobits, Chrono Crusade, Shaman King, Full Metal Alchemist, Higurashi no Naku koro ni, Love Hina, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Paradise Kiss, Princess Ai, Cardcaptor Sakura, Fruits Basket, Ranma ½, XxxHolic...and a bunch more. Impossible to remember all the names. A lot of them are Korean, a few German (we buy most of our manga in Germany, they have a much better selection!)
Phew!

I'm reading Batman and Robin, Ultimate Spider-man, Secret Six, Blackest Night, Green Lantern/Corps, Madame Xanadu, Supergod, Doktor Sleepless, basically anything Morrison, Ellis, or Alan Moore write. I also like Jonathan Hickman's stuff.
Yay comics!
I also make comics. Right now I just have a few webcomics out, but I'm working on some larger books.

Man, I'd love to make webcomics (well, comic books that actually get printed would be better but I'll take what I can get) I just don't think my drawing is up to par.
I tried reading your comic. . . But I just don't get it. Sorry, what's going on there?

It's not really a linear story. It was put out on a weekly basis. Each one is kind of self-contained. It's a silent comic as well. It's about a shamanic veterinarian and a possessed rabbit, who have surrealist adventures.

Yeah, I noticed your Spider Jerusalem avatar. Nice one. :D
I've been really enjoying Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield's webcomic FreakAngels. Really outstanding stuff!
I'm a comics artist myself, and a total comics nerd.
Some favorites:
Yoshihiro Tatsumi, incl. A Drifting Life and his various short works
Osamu Tezuka, esp. his later and more serious/epic works (Phoenix, Ode To Kirihito, MW)
Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics and Making Comics
Charles Burns' Black Hole
Los Bros. Hernandez' Love And Rockets stories
Maruo Suehiro, both older and newer works
Chris Ware!! God, that guy's amazing.
David Mack's Kabuki
Masamune Shirow's Appleseed and Ghost In The Shell
Katsuhiro Otomo, esp. Akira
Shintaro Kago's short pieces
Dan Clowes' David Boring - I didn't like Ghost World that much, surprisingly
Takaya Miou's shorts collections
R. Crumb! His shorts are always a trip, and I love his Book of Genesis.
Edward Gorey
Alan Moore
Jim Woodring's Frank titles
etc.

I used to, back in the day as it were. LOL. When comic book shops were first few and far between and then everywhere. Odd titles like Love and Rockets, some stuff called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (before it was watered down for the kids), The Crow, The Tick, Watchmen, 2000 AD Presents, Warrior, V for Vendetta, various X- titles, Batman, Spiderman (loved Kraven's Last Hunt at the time), Cry for Dawn...
Oh and Tank Girl (what a trip!), Albedo...

I try to pimp all the Ghost in the Shell that I can, wherever I go. It's pretty much one of the few non-Western animations I've ever watched.
Anyone remember those Corum comics? 1970s, says the wiki link.. That was some badass ->-bleeped-<-, was before Lone Wolf and Cub.. I remember seeing the adverts in the back of the Corum comics for LW&C, and tons of other ones...

I'm going to show exactly how much of a geek I am and say I only own three graphic novels....I have loads of collected editions though.
I've got all the sandman trades, plus most of the spin offs, Neil Gaiman is easily my fav author ever.
Collecting the re-releases/trades of transmetropolitin, Y the last man, fables, lucifer and preacher when I can. Collecting Ex Machina, DMZ, Allan moore's League of Extrodinary gentlemen and this wicked little indie title called wasteland as trades and I'm always on the look out for interesting titles that are a bit out there. Oviously have Watchmen and also Maus (I don't think you can call yourself a comic fan and not own those books)
Monthly I collect The boys by garth ennis, Northlanders by brian wood (just added demo to my pull list as well), The Unwritten by mike carey, Jack of fables and sweet tooth by jeff lemire.
Yes, I am a vertigo fan girl!
I also religiously by 2000ad every week...yay for british comics!

As far as stuff I've actually bought and own... ::)
Manga-wise: A load of Shaman King and Fruits Basket, some DNAngel. I also own some random volumes of stuff like .Hack, Othello (nothing to do with Shakespeare, I'm afraid :P), School Rumble, Beauty Pop etc. Not got it here so can't remember exactly! To be honest though, I prefer Korean manhwa to Japanese manga, not just for the way they draw the characters but also because the female characters can actually be quite cool/not annoyingly reliant on everyone else around them/with their only flaw as 'clumsiness/timidness'.
Read too much stuff online to keep track of though. Not just manga, but American comics too (even though these are normally so-bad-they're-good ones like Captain Awareness). I'm very into webcomics (just come out of rereading the massive archives of one I love called Kagerou) but seeing as I don't actually own them, not listing them here. ;D

A buddy of mine has all of Preacher, I'm gonna switch him for my All of Sandman and then get ready for the Saint of Killing, who sounds AWESOME.
Oh Vertigo, you complete me. I want to read some Northlanders too, because let's face it, Vikings are awesome.
Is Deux Ex Machina Vertigo? I don't think so, but I can't remember. Oh, and I need to read Y the Last Man.
I need like, one of those necklaces with the hourglass that make you able to time travel so that I can make the time to read this stuff.

Ex Machina is on wildstorm, but it is Brian K Vaughan so it's pretty damn good. Wild storm have a really annoying habit of always collect 5 stories per trade. grrrr damn you.
Definitely start reading northlanders, because like you say, vikings are awesome.
If you find some of those hourglass necklaces can you save one for me. Now I'm just going to go look for a money mine.

Have I mentioned how much I love the webcomic FreakAngels (http://www.freakangels.com/ (http://www.freakangels.com/))? I mean, a Warren Ellis story with sooper-'mazing and dynamic art by Paul Duffield, incorporating post-apocalyptic, geek-leftist (perhaps "BoingBoing leftist?") and posthuman themes, and it's a free webcomic.
What more can you ask for?

Never really bought into marvel much...or superhero in general really. Do love Garth Ennis' punisher max run tho. As for kick ass, it is a huge amount of fun, but at the back of my mind i have this thought it's trying too hard to be the next big thing.
Cheers for the link to Freak angels hun, bookmarked and reading as I type.

Yay! <3
Enjoy FreakAngels. I certainly do.
Yeah, I don't do superheroes much. I'm not really into the whole vigilante-who-knows-what's-best, black-and-white good and evil thing, and you can only do so many deconstructed "moral gray area" superhero titles before it gets a bit old. Of course, the whole muscles-on-muscles-on-muscles thing (being drawn by skinny dweebs, of course) doesn't do much for me, either.

You know, the Rob LOLfeld look.

Deadpool's like... the coolest thing ever. Cable's kind of lame, but put him WITH Deadpool and you have a good old fashioned Odd Couple.
I like black and white specifically because I don't believe it really exists. I find it comforting that I can pick up a comic and, for once in my life, know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. That, and Marvel's not so cut-and-dry these days what with the Civil War, the Secret Invasion, and Norman Osborne's procurement of SHIELD. Though, Siege is on the cusp of re-establishing the status quo.
Is it really so bad to want there to be good guys and bad guys?

I used to collect comics... way back when! I was a Marvel fangirl. I even put them in those mylar protectors and wanted no creases in my comics- at all! lol. I remember the old work from John Byrne and Bill Sienkiewicz when they were both with Marvel.
Love their work!
Wow. Thanks for bringing this thread up! I'm getting all warm and fuzzy remembering those old comics!

My latest love is Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma, the same guy who created Azumanga Daioh. It's about an extremely energetic and adventurous little girl, and can best be described as a celebration of the pure joy she feels at everyday things: shopping, visiting the neighbors, going to a Shinto shrine, Dad's friend coming over. Yotsuba's sheer joy at everything never feels old, and makes me want to be a kid again.

I enjoyed Yotsuba. Though a friend of mine did that thing where they insist that you borrow their comics without consulting whether or not you'd like them, and that always turns me off of things a little bit.
Interesting note: She's 4chan's mascot.

Appropriately so. 4Chan is like a giant crowd of basement-dwelling, 30-something Yotsubas on crack with Asperger's, Tourette's and serious clinical depression.

I absolutely love Takako Shimura's "Hourou Musuko" is by far one of my favourite stories as the main character is transgendered and struggling with it. I figure just about anyone here would either identify with Shuu or tatsuki. 10 volumes in and I still can't get enough.
The same mangaka does "aoi hana" and that is another decent one. Then again I love yuri, I also like Sasameki koto, I think it may be a bit better than Aoi Hana. Girlfriends and Ameiro Kouchakan Kandan are also among my favourite mangas, all of which are in the yuri genre.
Legends of Galactic Heros, Elfen Lied, Bleach, and obviously Strawberry Panic! are also all great series that I like alot, even though I probably prefer the anime of these ones (even though the anime of elfen lied was really short).
Oh, and Azumanga Daioh always makes me smile, even on the worst of days

I spent almost $80 at the comic store today.
Got The Boys Volume 2, my usual assortment of Marvel monthlies, a new Tank Girl comic (I know, right?), a Mass Effect comic, and Volume 1 of Haunt.
If you do not know what Haunt is, it's Robert Kirkman's writing + Todd McFarlane's character design and if you're a fan of Venom (which everyone is) then it's a must have. That reminds me, I really have to read Battle Pope.

Have read through most of Ranma 1/2, obviously.
Also read Death Note and Yotsuba.
Nowadays I read the Blackest Night / Brightest Day part of DC, but nothing else.

Yes! I just found this now I can be my true self AND discuss comics!
<basks in awe for a moment>
Ok. Me I am HUGE into X-Men. I love the newer movies. I found online via freeware just about every X-Men comic (Title is just X-Men so I guess thats the original run) in PDF format. Just finished watching X-Men Evolution tv series on Youtube that Marvel put up.
I also am getting into Captain America too. I am new to comics, but I really like Marvel. Not much DC experience other than Batman, which I like.
Also Playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance on my PSP....awesome game.
Oh and can not forget Watchmen!
