Title: Though you guys may find this interesting.
Post by: Ellieka on November 09, 2009, 02:59:36 PM
"Using tissue grown in a laboratory, researchers have engineered fully functional replacement penises. The organs were made for rabbits, but the technique may someday be useful for people."

;D Yeah, I saw it in another section on this forum. But I think it's worth mentioning again here!

My day just got even better.

I still feel a bit like I'm gonna find out it's a joke...

I don't know, dude. It could be... but on the other hand they have been growing organs for some time now.

That's pretty cool! Although hopefully by the time I get round to getting one they'll have worked out how to make it human sized and not rabbit sized  ;)

If only, huh?

It's a shame that if/when this becomes available to guys like us it will most definitely be horribly, horribly expensive

I don't mind never owning a house in exchange for owning my very own dick. :D who needs a mortgage when you could have a penis payment?

Okay... regardless of whether or not this is true, they're using male rabbits. I wonder what would happen if they tried to grow penises (penii? lol) on female rabbits or whatever mammal they choose.

Despite the fact that's I'm averse to bottom surgery (cost, whatnot and whatever), I'd be insanely thrilled if I were able to have a real, functioning, aesthetically right penis, regardless of the cost. I just don't have much hope it'll happen in my lifetime.

They're already building human hearts with this technology, that was last year. I don't think this is far behind.

Look how far we've come in just 100 years. Technology moves fast.

Sounds like they need to have penile cells to grow from. Pity.

Perhaps they could take psuedo-penis cells and grow those... just pickle it in T and HGH. It wouldn't look 100%, and it may not function to quite the same level as cismale kit, but it'd still be better than current methods of phalloplasty.

...At least that's what my forearm is telling me .

(Disclaimer : I know nothing about biology).

For a penis, we could probably use clitoral tissue.

For the testicles, that would be a different story. Perhaps they could just take off one of our X chromosomes and take a DNA sample from a father/brother and add the Y to the mix.

With such a small change, it's unlikely the body would attack the new cells. If that were a problem, maybe the Y could be transported via viruses. (Hey XXY would be better than XX.) This is probably a flawed idea (impractical/unlikely to work.)

I thought that too, but I just read a recent scientific article that scientists have discovered how to use fat cells as stem cells now. It's in the early process but this is huge news. Perhaps in the future?

That will be AWESOME when they get it working. Not just for us, but for everyone.

I suppose the whole point of stem cell research is for scientists to guide the development of the stem cell (overriding the DNA, I assume). If that's the case, I suppose it wouldn't matter if the cells came from an XX individual to grow a neophallus.

Anybody fancy a pizza?

That would require family being willing to help.

Well look at organ donation... The body doesn't reject those cells usually. And that's usually a completely unrelated person's body part that's being implanted! So it's not so much about being related as it is about blood types and antibodies.

So... they could theoretically grow it out of only a father/brother's DNA then, couldn't they? And that would still be a 50% match to your own natural chromosomes. Better than most who have their heart or kidney or liver transplanted can say. :P Because, last I checked, they didn't know how to do single-chromosome replacement... But the last time I took a genetics class was last year. So I might be outdated.  ;)

A good point... But I'm sure some lawyer somewhere would be willing and able to win a DNA petition for something like that... They've won wackier things.

I think overall it's a really cool idea and I can't wait to see where the technology takes it! You never know, science does move fast. Fifteen years down the road, we could be looking at being able to grow things like this... Now that would be worth whatever price they put on it.

...And I think this is the longest post I've made on this site. Heh...
