Title: What do you do for a living?
Post by: Robin. on November 10, 2009, 01:29:05 PM
I was just wondering what some people do for a living, maybe this will help give me some ideas.

Considering that I live in Alabama...one of the most conservative fundamentalest states. And also considering the town I live in I think I might have to look elsewhere for a job. So I was also wondering if anyone new a place that would likely have a bunch of job oportunities for people like me. I'm willing to do anything, but I'm currently working on a degree in mathimatics and have experience with mechanical engineering.... But I only did that stuff for money, now I'm thinking about doing what I really wanted and studying Psycology and Philosophy. But Money is a big issue.  :P

I'm a senior in high school and I am a cashier at a local grocery store.

Pay is low, and I am part time. It sucks kinda.

I need another job, but the only direction is adult industry (stripping, web cam stuff, phone sex). I really do not want to enter that.

I'm a technical support analyst for a software company in San Mateo, CA. In reality, anyone with seventh grade reading/comprehension skills could do this job. Get the users to follow the instructions, and most issues can be resolved.

I've been working in information technology since 1991, and in tech support since 1996. So, the experience gets me a good salary.

I have 30 plus years in retail in one form or another.  But right now I am unemployed at the moment, but I most likely will return to retail.  I have training in some computer programs and languages, but I only have a AA degree in programing.  And everyone wants a BS or higher.

I left my college because there was a conflict about my paying out of pocket, which I could not do.

I'm a full time student, studying psychology. I'd skip the Philosophy major if I were you. After almost four years without a break I'm getting kind of burnt out on psych and have been looking at social work instead of counseling and therapy, but that might be just from overexposure. I'm thinking about taking next term off and just cooking hamburgers or something to get my perspective back.

Yeah I think I'm going to stick with my math major, plus I would have to start all over for the Psych stuff, and now I only have about 2 years and one course left, assuming I don't flunk any courses. Although Ironicly I'm not doing well in my probability course but there is just so many new symbols to learn in that class! But I can't imagine what sort of job i could get with a math B.A. I'd like to do my M.A. but thats just more money and really my transition is more important to me and my happiness. I think I might just get a job at a gay bar or something. Maybe move to california... After I get my B.A. IDK....

I used to have an electronics surplus business - just small, buy stuff and stick it on ebay.

That crashed in 2007.

Right now I live rent-free on a 5-acre place in an old trailer that ought to be burned, but instead I have to, and am, fixing it up because it's what I have until I can build something better. Meanwhile I go to EMT school and will hopefully be an EMT in June.

I'm not counting on there being EMT jobs, or any jobs, by then. If there are, great - get my bankruptcy done so I'm hire-able and I may have a chance, Or not, there are a lot of people getting these skills now.

I figure EMT skills will be useful in the coming "doom times" anyway.

In the meantime, I peddle "awareness" ribbons I make, in Santa Cruz. I'm working on playing the musical saw for tips but so far, so bad - I'm not that musical yet. I'll do anything I can, because there's just NOTHING out there. We are degrading into a barter society, mixed with something like Yugoslavia of the early 90s.

What money I get goes into paying my friend back the loan for EMT school, surviving and keeping the motorcycle running, and preps. Preps are such things as enough contact lenses for the rest of my projected life (20-30 years) and stuff like tools, ammo, food stores, medical stores, etc.

Well, those don't know me might find this unusual but I've been in construction practically all my working life.  I started out as a union electrician and was one vote shy of being VP of the oldest electrical contracting firm in Chicago.

Along the way I've done what few in my trade have done.  That all ended when I came out.  From six figures to wondering how I can pay my bills.  That's the reality of coming out in construction.

I sold my property & casualty business with a large U.S. insurer last year to get out of debt and have funds for all of my surgeries. This year I started an investments/ life &  health insurance biz for us LGBT folks. It's still in start up mode.  I want all of us in the T, G & L , allied and in between communities to have a place to call home. You can write me and ask for our web address if you are interested.

In order to keep a local judge happy and off my back for child support based on a ridiculous amount he set, I'm also seeking p/t work outside of my professional career. Judges don't look favorably on start up businesses operating in the middle of a recession! I might be selling lingerie or shoes just to keep this guy happy! I was basically told in court that SRS is not a "medical necessity"-at least not enough to have need to sell my old business. Therefore, he's keeping me bound to make my old payments based on a $100k income.

I guess there still are gender police out there!  :police: At this point, I just hope not to be thrown in jail because I had the audacity to spend money on gender reassignment surgery!  :icon_boxing:

Currently I work at a crummy restaraunt job as a line cook...on the side I work on various video game projects in hopes of turning a profit (just little cell phone games and such).

I also do little graphic design projects whenever I can find them for extra cash. Anything to feed me and keep the doctors paid.

I was an electrical engineer for a major US corporation until 9/11 when I was laid off along with a lot of other people. Since then I'm a free lance artist and make more now than I ever did as a corporate lackey. I own my own business and actually get paid for doing what I love. I never thought I could do it though until I was forced to.

I started off as a lab technician on a 6 month grant in sunny Liverpool UK. Now I'm a Prof. in Medical Science in Australia. My Oficial title is Head of... So my sister in law (who is a tower of strength to me) sometimes introduces as me as, "This is my brother in law, XXXX. She's a Head, we're waiting for her to be mounted
Of course I'm in drab (at the time) as I'm not full full time. Her pronoun use confuses the hell out of everybody, and we have to bury tears of laughter.

But money is very tight, research funds are slashed. Australia has come through the recession well, but then we have been deeply hit in the past.

I do feel for all of you guys in the USA. Hang in there. Where are the jobs going to be? My thoughts? there is an ageing population, many of whom have money (still). Not many are computer literate, not at all like you youngies . I reckon some service industry business's may work. You using IT skills to service oldies who want "old fashioned" service but have no idea how to get around in todays world.
Excuse me for a rabbit on: I have aged (80's) relatives in the Shrewsbury area, somewhere in Penns? They can no longer get to the shops, they have good disposable pensions. They phone the supermarket and stuff is delivered but no treats etc 'cos they don't know what's available. I reckon if people like them had a pamphlet distributed with some sort of shopping service that they could get to you by phone or maybe email, and you delivered really good quality with the extras, maybe some samples of specials etc. And build up trust it may work. I was thinking along the lines that " My company will give you a bond to the cost of your first purchase to prove our honesty. If we fail to deliver you always have that bond." etc etc.

I know there are heaps of online shopping services but not for the old, suspicious and IT naive.

Sorry
Just my $1m worth

Hugs

Maybe you should look into becoming an actuary. I understand that it becomes mind-numbingly dull after a few years, but the pay is good.

I think I would have made a good actuary, and I think I would have stuck it out for longer than most. I have that kind of tedious mindset.

But I couldn't work full time and still ace upper-division math classes. I just wasn't that naturally talented.

I have a graduate degree I put to use and also am a computer database geek, so two jobs one full time and one part time.  The computer job requires the previously mentioned graduate degree as well.

I'm also a former business owner sold it 1/08 and never looked back.

I didn't know what actuary was so I looked it up. I didn't know such a job existed! I have wished to have a job like that many times, I'm rather naturally talented at that sort of thing. Without useing math or statistics i can generaly point to the best solution to a problem of almost any nature, of course knowing the solution is one thing being able to put it into action is another. how would I go about finding a job as an actuary?

I'm a lazy ninja at the moment.  ;D

Actually, at the moment I'm not working 'cause of disability; however, I've been looking for work anyway and I haven't been hired anywhere yet. *shrugs*

When I was working, I was a cashier. That's pretty much the only job I've had my whole life... sux! Anyway, when in transition I worked at 7-11, a grocery store, a liquor store, and a drug store (cashier in all jobs). It's pretty concervitive here, too.

Ironically, I had an easier time finding a job being transgendered than having MS and epilepsy. I guess the fear is that I'll have too many sick days, won't be able to slave for long hours, and I might get overwhelmed and find myself on the ground in a seizure. Although I'm on meds, and the combo seems to be working and I haven't had too many troubles, I guess they don't wanna believe me. *shrugs* I guess with the economy sucking, too, there's not a lot of job openings and they're gonna pick someone healthy over someone not-so-healthy. *sigh* I never had a problem finding a job before, not even when I was on hormones for two weeks and was going full-time... no problems. I just explained to the manager that I'm trans, and that despite what my ID says, my name is Natalie and I'm a woman. I got the job over 10 other people applying for the job.

I was a facilities manager for a large footwear and apparel company. Most of my work was in the Caribbean in Pueto Rico and Dominican Republic and some in the states, a lot of travel. Then a few years ago I was DX'd with MS and knew I had to find another career. I moved to the VI and now manage a Resort Condo Complex. I like it and its work with my MS. I get to meet people from all over the world while they are on vacation. Although the VI is rather conservative at first glance I'm actually well accepted.

I don't think it's possible anymore, it's been a long time since I cared. With bittorrent and widespread broadband these days there prolly isn't much of a

I have 30 level 80 characters from World of Warcraft (i multibox multiple accounts at once). These each could bring me between $500 and $1000. So tempting but it is against their policy and I can't bring myself to do it. Oh well.

I used to play an mmo and I never understood why poeple buy endgame characters. All of the fun for me was the leveling and adventuring and bonding with orgmates including someone who would become a r/l love. Once we got top levels and items we all just kind of sat around and got bored.

Let see I held quite a few jobs. Target in high school, then 4 years in the Navy as a Torpedo Man's Mate. Got out of the Navy earlier because I had like 40 days of vacation still, so I worked at a consignment shop, which was bad because I pretty much spent my pay check there lol. Moved back to my home state for few years where I worked as an armed security guard and then worked tech support for gateway.

Decided to move again, so I worked at Sears for about a year where I had some problems come up and pretty much you can say burned that bridge there. But it all worked out I got a job a month later at a call center for a wireless carrier where I started out in tech support. Pretty much people called in when their email/internet/mms/ringtone did not work. Currently I still work for the same company, but in a different position. I pretty much do what the recording you hear first says when call customer service "This call maybe recorded for Quality Assurance."

I spent twenty years in the military, then five years as a manager/instructor in an IT company.  Now I'm a security contractor somewhere overseas for the last six years.  I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.  Don't have a clue how I'll earn my living when I begin rlt, something I'm deeply worried about...

Becca you rock! I used to sell the "pogo pins" used in the various hacking setups (and lots of legit stuff) and in fact kind of created the pogo pin market on Ebay.

OK so I aced my First Responder class, am signed up for EMT-1 used to be called EMT-B that will be 5 months of learning/fun then a national exam and I'll be a real one of those EMT thingies. Then it's on to getting a chapter 7 bankruptcy done so I'll actually be employable.

In the meantime, what's worked out well for me up until the last few weeks is making and selling "awareness" ribbons, that actually got me what I'd take home on Minimum Wage, if the weather was good, I worked hard, etc etc etc in other words that was the golden ideal I'd reach once in a while.

Now it's so bloody cold I can put in 8 hours and only net about $20, still good of you're starving but I'm not that hungry yet.

I have the EMT school paid for and money for the bankruptcy to do right after, so all I have to obtain is survival money, $30 a week or so, $50 is dandy. Since the market is dead in Santa Cruz for the next 4-5 months, I'm thinking of doing things locally. The local Walmart may let me set up a display with my ribbons, so that's a possibility. I was working on my Musical Saw playing and all ready to get out there with that, but it turns out to KILL my wrists/elbows, imagine having tennis elbow on both sides. And I'm working on something else but don't want to say anything more until I'm good if I get there. Right now, the options are work 8 hours to make $20 or less, last time I didn't make much more than expenses, or try some things locally, maybe I'll only have to work 4 hours to make $20.

Deflation is here and the Apoc .... oh wait that's here too. I'm amazed at the wide variety of jobs here and how many are still employed, it's good to see but remember it's not gonna last. Save, stock up, eyeglasses, medicines, supplies, books you always wanted to read, nails fishhooks socks you name it. Remember it always made sense! Ralph Nader bought up pairs of surplus Army dress shoes when he was in college or about that time, and wore 'em for years. Thrift and preparation are IN and the time and money you save can save your life if things get bad, and will always save time and money for fun things if times stay good.

I work in manufacturing. Basically, all I do is stand in a warehouse all day and run a computerized saw. I cut steel for parts used to make the grass cutters seen along interstates, highways, and otherwise large expanses of grass. Mostly we work with John Deere and other tractor company's, but occasionally we get independent orders. It's not much, I only rake in just under $400 a month. I also write music in hopes of being a musician someday, but so far, it's not looking that great. I've only got two songs.

Thank you! I have to admit I miss that job, and some of the people. There's a certain honor among thieves that the (insert unladylike word here) I rub elbows with in academia these days just don't get. I remember when I got into it, I was hanging out in a friends store when the local police chief came in. He took my friend aside and I thought there was trouble, until I saw a pair of football cards come out of the cops pocket, lol. I worked considerably more discreetly, but my buddy got away with murder in that town and was widely seen as a criminal that everybody loved...but you know, as one of the few people he truly called a friend he always had my back...unlike these so called educrats who will stab you in it then turn you around and stab you in the face, too.

Great academics stab you in the face first, and the real good ones don't need a second stab.

oooooh that could be tricky! - What's your range? Luckily, and thanks to a small genetic aberration which I didn't know about until years later in life, my voice never really broke - so I'm a contralto. (only amateur) But strangely enough I do know of a couple of natal female barritones and tenors!

I guess it could make getting parts a bit awkward...

I'm a tenor! It's a huge bummer because there is no way I could get work if I transitioned. The only thing I can think of is to lead two lives, but I can't even begin to see how that would work if I developed breasts! Just imagine the leading "man" being prettier than the woman... then again to think about it? Lol

<=== IT Manager at a large distribution center (ie: a freaking warehouse!) ... needless to say, it is an interesting (and very male-dominated)  environment to transition in, but co-workers and fellow management were surprisingly supportive, and it's a non-issue at this point.

Opera singer wow! I'm impressed!

Yeah, I'm the crew-cut, leather jacket and boots wearing tough who goes up to someone painting out in the open and says something like "Ooh, nice plein air work, nice use of colors" lol.

The rules are .... .going away. I've seen more than one classically trained musician do quite well "busking" or playing on the street. Your skills give you more job security than you think.

About voice changes, yeah, that might be a problem. As a girl you can do a lot better though, as far as the street singing thing goes.

You might want to google or IMDB Adele Anderson, she is a transgirl tenor, originally classically trained, who made a good living out of joining an all girl singing group in the UK called Fascinating Aida. And like I said female tenors are more common than you may realise. In fact my own mother was one! Yes I know  ::) but like many on the fringes of the English Upper classes, we were a very strange family!

Looks like a lot of people here took the stereotypical 'macho' road to the Army, Navy ,etc.  30 years in the Police, also an Electronics Technician and for the past 8 years working as a Lab Assistant in Pathology.  The pay is lousy, but as it took me 18 months to find work after leaving the Police Force, I'm not going to complain. Obviously being a copper was not a worthwhile reference after all.
There is unfortunately no rospect for promotion unless I want to do a BSc, which would take a long time studying part-time. I would have to resign and try and get a job as a Medical Scientist as I would be too qualified for my current position too.
Still thinking about going to University, perhaps to do a language, once I get myself sorted out.

I've made my living through various Internet projects for several years. After getting laid off, I decided to try making a go at eBay selling, which worked very well until my product source began to dry up. Then I stumbled upon someone reasonably honest who teaches people to do affiliate marketing/web development and that's what I've evolved into. This business has kind of a bad image from how-to hustlers and junk site builders, but most people I know seem to run pretty sound businesses. The vast usage of the web these days makes for a lot of opportunities, but you have to get your head around the right way to do it if you want to make a living, though. I messed with it for nearly 2 years before it started paying off.

A web business is a pretty good way to go for a transgendered person. I'd suggest more of you look into it. You do have be able to think a bit like a salesperson to some extent and you have to do lots of writing about sometimes not-so-interesting topics. For the income potential, though, it's certainly worth it. It absolutely requires a strong ability to motivate yourself and keep a postive attitude about what your doing.

Well I'm not exagerating when I say that I could easily voice double for Maddy. My friends say I sound eerily like her - I can also do a reasonable Joan Baez...

But as for opera - well inevitably as a contralto I always end up playing the dowager duchess or some hideous old biddie who looks abour 103 years old! For example in light opera, (Gilbert &Sulivan) of which I've done quite a bit I've sung both Ruth in Pirates, and Katisha in the Mikado.

But I think this topic is getting to the point where we will need our own thread or we'll be accused of hijacking ;) anyone care to begin one?

I'm not Nigerian, although some of the third world countries like that are fast becoming the most web business savvy spots in the world. I think one reason so many people are reluctant to take Internet business seriously is because their first intro to it is from spam.

I got into it after running across a couple of interesting folks on Twitter who seemed to know what they were talking about. One hard thing to do in this business is look past all the "amazing offers" that want your money and realize you can pretty much learn it all-- and even start making money-- without spending anything. There are many free services and open source things these days, you don't have to pay anybody anything.

There's also no real one-stop place to learn it. You pretty much have to bounce around a bit. Here's a few links to some good free info, though (I've got no stake in any of these links, BTW):
