The Golden Eagle was for a long time one of the worst residential hotels in the world, I hear they cleaned it up some, so now its only one of the worst in the nation. Though it's the first time I've heard of a murder there.
On the other hand, SF has the worst homicide solution rate of any major police department, (in like the 30%) range - yes Virginia, you can get away with murder here - so its not like they are going to solve it or anything.
And when someone says - he could smell crack "wafting down" from the unit – "that acrid, chemical smell. Nothing else smells like it." - well, I tend to believe him because he is right, nothing smells like crack being smoked, and once you know what it is its as distinctive a smell as anything else in the world.
It's a shame so young and all, and no mention of a job, or education level, but its a very hard place to get on in if you don't have basic skills.

Yes, its tragic that she died so young. It seems so many transwomen are killed when they are just starting out on life.
Adding insult is the coverage by the SF Chronicle and the SF Weekly, both of which mis-gender her.

A light of hope for this world is mention in the BAR story that Mariah's family accepted her.

The Chron tends to hold to its standard that you have to be on HRT/SRS (wow, just like so many in here insist up also) before they will change the marker.
