Title: Aaaaargh!!! Hairdressers

Are all hairdressers deaf.
I have been growing my hair out for the last eight or nine months. After about three months, I went to get my hair tidied up and trimmed. The hairdresser took about an inch off and I was not happy. After another three months I went for a trim and I thought she had got the idea as she layered my hair and took very little off the length.
I went today for a tidy for Christmas. My hair was at a length that on the sides it was just past my ears and at the back I could form a short ponytail. It was just starting to get to the length I wanted.
So I sat in the chair and clearly stated that I was still growing my hair out but wanted it presentable for Christmas.
She held my hair out at the crown and indicated that she intended to take about an eighth of an inch off my layers. this was ok and she started to cut.
By the time she was finished, she had chopped about an inch off the sides and made the back so short that I cannot put my hair in a ponytail at all.
I have come to the conclusion that all hairdressers are deaf and no matter what you want, they will cut your hair to the style they want.
I will now have to wait until the summer to get my hair back to a decent length.
To say that I am pissed off is an understatement.

Ah But it is tidy for Christmas. :-\ That is why I won't go near a stylist for at least a year.
Maybe it would look so bad in a couple, three weeks. :-X
Have a Merry Christmas anyway,

Speaking of the Devil...3 days ago I got my hair cut in over an year! I got it extremely layered and got wisp bangs...That way it feminizes my face--Also it's not to short but it's about a little bit past shoulder length!!!
You just gotta communicate very well with your hairdresser or else...Well...You know... :-X

That's probably the best advice, and that might or might not be hard for me. I mean, getting the ole' male barber shop trim was easy - walk in, sit down, and go through the routine "how do you want it this time? Oh, the regular. Oh, regular guy's medium uh. Yeah." Whatever, just get it off, I couldn't care less. Now I've been growing it for 6 or 7 months, and plan on a real hair appointment maybe next month. The secret is finding an accepting and supportive hair dresser, not just one that would barely tolerate me. With that drama involved getting hair work done, how much can I dream up for a surgeon? :-\

I've heard from a few friends that the cheaper places are the ones who tend to do it too short. So it's probably because the stylist isn't very experienced yet (if they ever will be) and keep cutting it shorter to cover their mistakes. Maybe.
I've got decent length now and need some kind of styling. My mom used to take me to her salon all the time when I was a kid because I refused to go to a barber, and I always had long hair from age ten on. It's funny looking back now and they clearly knew something was different about me, and talked to me like one of the girls, I loved that.

I refuse to use cost cutters. My son and I both discovered that they don't listen to what you say at all and think 1 inch is more like 10.

Pippa,
I know your feeling. About 6 years ago, I also experienced the same desperate moment.
Last week, I again had my hair cut short because my hairs tended to get tangled while drying. I barely can make a ponytail now.
Hairdressers here do listen what I say and are careful in guessing what my hair will look like. They know that I am a man, but wish feminine styles. When they recommend me not to tie my hairs, I also explain that I have to tie my hairs at my workplace, unlike other women. They figure out the proper length of my hair, and the results have not been surprising: I got exactly what I wanted.
I am considering having a new hair style very soon, very short, but still looking feminine like:

I searched on line for days looking for just the right style and cut, then printed out all the ones I liked and took them with me to the stylist. I showed her the photos, and just said "that one". I was dressed as Evie so she smiled understandably, and got started. 2 hours later I was in love, as she ht it right on.
I guess having a visual reference was what made the difference. ;)

I'm getting my hair done Monday and am determined to get an androgynous style. I've got some possibilities from the web which i will take with me, but I think a chat with my hairdresser will pay dividends. My hair isn't that long yet - just about ao inch over my ears and about at the nape of my neck, so I want more styling than cutting

I got mine trimmed a little to get rid of the split ends and had it under cut to thin it out in spots so it will lay better when it comes back out again. I told my hair stylist that I wanted a woman's cut and she gave me one. I rarely get mine cut more than once a year and then it won't be very much. The lady that cuts mine has been styling mine for a good while and usually does a fantastic job of giving me what I want.

FIND A NEW STYLIST.
That's all :)
But no, really. A good one will listen to what you want.

Hi NB,
Thanks but I am afraid the pic is not me, darn! I would like to have long thick hair like I used to. I always wore mine long when I was younger-at least shoulder length. Well, now mine is recovering from a bad cut last year from someone else I had never met before-won't make that mistake again. I am happy with the repair job a friend of mine did last week. I can't wait to see what it looks like next year. By the way a few years ago I had to take some meds that made my hair fall out and still has never fully returned. I am just glad to have what's left!

I'm going back quite a few years now, but I had a couple of really nice cuts from Supercuts!
I haven't had my hair cut now for about 5 years so it's longer now than it is in the pic.

Quote from: Renate on December 22, 2009, 07:10:58 AMit doesn't sound like she got a man's hairstyle, the stylist just cut a little more off than what she wanted. i mean, hairdressers don't take a ruler, and cut the hair to the exact length. it could happen to anyone.

I wasn't a mens cut she just took far too much off. I don't think she would have given a male cut considering the heels, make up, clothing and jewelery I was wearing at the time!
