We rented this movie for Christmas and it was awesome.  I love Sci Fi and this one is a keeper.  ;D

I saw this and I didn't really like it. I guess it was hyped up to much so my expectations where a little shot..

Would give it another watch though!

Why am I the only one who thought it was stupid  :-\

I'm sorry, but aliens coming to the earth is a great storyline and you can be preachy if your'e SUBTLE, but District 9 was everything but.

Firefly was an incredibly stupid concept, but was done in such a way that it's hailed as brilliant. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, same thing. The new series "V" is shaping up to be nice as well. I'm sorry but for me this District 9 is the "Twilight" of alien movies.

it wasn't really an alien movie at all, it was more of a social commentary that used aliens as a way to move the story along. but I didn't think it was all that great of a movie and the ending left me a little disappointed, but I want some of that cat food!

The only problem with that cat food, is a half hour later, you want to chase mice.

Wait there goes one now......................................................

I just watched it last night.  We were having a double feature DVD night and we had just made supper and sat around the idiot box for the movie.

It was a little gruesome in the beginning and put me off my appetite while I was eating.

The fact that humans can oppress anything different from them is a common theme, both in film and in real life.

We may start out with the best of intentions to do good, but eventually it becomes doing bad in the name of good.

I was uplifted by the ending of the movie, and the CGI effects were incredible.  It looked so very real.  But the transformation of the main character and the alien weapon killing effects were a bit gross, but that added to the realism.

Yeah I watched it awhile back and ...well.... I kinda fell a sleep through some of it but saw enough to realise I didn't like it, maybe if I liked guns *shrugs*.
Plus it seemed to rotate around one or two maybe three locations which got rather stiflingly boring. Was there a plot? I must of missed that bit, it may of been shrouded by cat food and ..guns. Did I mention there were a lot of guns in it?? Those kind that never run out of bullets.. *yawn*.

So, my philosophy professor's originally from Johannesburg.  Turns out that they actually call the people of Midtown the "Midtown Prawns" because they scavenge and stuff.  I don't even think they consider it slurring, though obviously it is.

after the main character is "infected" is when the story picks up, most notably when it's discovered he has the hand of a prawn.

That was actually the scene that was playing when I had to head home. Really it is no surprise, it was pretty evident that was the direction it was heading in.

I almost wish the movie hadn't done that and had kept it's documentary tone.  But then it wouldn't have been a Peter Jackson produced summer blockbuster.

If I had a prawn hand I would eat it off, wait for it to grow back and eat it off some more...yummy

Their fuel situation is interesting though and reminded me of a physics lecture a while back. There is this theory out there about anti-matter, and the Large Hadron Collider can make it in very small quantities. Supposedly a quarter-dollar sized disk of anti-matter would be enough to put the space shuttle into orbit, a gallon-jug sized chunk enough to power a trip to Mars. I know it sounds sci-fi geeky but it's real stuff! The LHC can only make a few atoms of it at a time, but a dedicated facility designed specifically for antimatter production would be less cost prohibitive.

Yeah, all you need is the bottle to put it in...

Sure, the metaphor was pretty obvious. But honestly, isn't it usually, in Sci Fi and fantasy? You always have to take it with a grain of salt.

Which is why I quite liked the movie. ;)

I just recently watched this movie and I loved it too. The main character is fantastic. Only one plot hole I noticed regarding the oil being wasted, but otherwise it is a great movie and very relevant.

When I first saw the trailer for this I was kinda just sitting there in the cinema thinking it was some kind of Anti-U.N. documentary which kinda had me intrigued. Until suddenly you're present with a gigantic hovering mother ship and before I knew it I was sitting at the end of my seat squealing with delight over the idea of this bizarre movie about alien asylum seekers. Went to see it with a few friends, was pretty fun, officially made it into one of my favourite movies of all time lists.

What I like most about the movie is how it actually starts off off some haphazardly created documentary and almost effortlessly drops in key points of the plot and even develops upon it's narrative without you really noticing all that much. Great way it was shot, I have to hand it to the guys.

And who the HELL can not admit that the Prawn Mech Suit at the end was not the coolest thing ever?

Sad enough to have got it on BluRay when it came out  ;)

lol, I like that movie. I'm gonna rent the sequel soon.

As for District 9, a lot of people thought the ending saved to movie, but I found the ending quite depressing actually. I don't mind a sad ending, I don't mind an open ending, but I do mind no ending. I found that D9 didn't really have any kind of resolution or sense of unity at the end.

But maybe that's film student snobbism leaking through. Or I'm not remembering it right. I can't really tell :P

I watched it, and I really liked it. I think it has many parallelisms to real life, about how we treat others based on fear and bias and I believe that the combination of all the emotions was really good.

I'd definitely watch it again :P

I think its a great film but I see why people dont like it. Most people are expecting some sort of epic alien movie but thats not what its really about. The film is about racism but if we had a bunch of white guys abusing a bunch of black guys we would of been like "Meh we've seen this all before." and plus it wouldnt of really interested a younger audience. The film was influenced by district 6 hence the name district 9.

District 9 is one of my favorite movies! Not the top favorite, I save that spot for Trainspotting, but it's pretty high on my list.

It amazes how so much was down with such a low budget, and done with friends and loved ones.

Argh, and I really enjoyed how incredibly human the main character was... he was so selfish and yet was still able to redeem himself!

The whole xenophobia aspect of the movie is a wonderful lesson to come upon too, but I can only wonder how many got distracted from this point by the action. It's something all of the human race seems to experience, at least some of us are able to break free from such ridiculous fears.

It's also why it's not a bunch of white guys messing with a bunch of Native Americans or a bunch of Hispanics messing with a bunch of Indians, though the Hispanic one might have drawn an audience because it isn't as well known.

I was going to use this movie in my socially class to talk about racism, actually.

For me it was less about racism and more about the Xenophobic behaviour humans commit, though, as it's the director's way of alluding to the true incident or law enforced racial segregation it makes sense to say it is also about racism. It can also be about human behaviour and how we are able to let others live poorly as long as we aren't affected.

I found it more racial, though the racism was based off of the xenophobia.  So it had both, at least in my book.  But it was easier, for me, to specify which parts were racism than xenophobia because the whole movie was about xenophobia...I hope that all makes sense.

I've been raving about this film ever since I saw it. It's probably easy enough to pick it apart - unsubtle message, gross presentation, etc. - but as films go, the whole is better than the sum of its parts. It's effective, it's moving, it's memorable, it's honorable.
