I would change it now if at all possible - legally and then through your school. It might be harder to get the records changed after the fact.

+1
that was a big concern of mine as well. If you still have time [and the means] I'd jump on that asap.
I'd imagine though that there must be a way.

Hi Mark,
If you are certain you are going to transition, and I apologise if that is a rude comment, it will save a lot of paperwork and hassle before you get the official degree paperwork.

in the us, by law, they have to reissue transcripts in your legal name if it is changed. they do not, however, have to reissue diplomas. so while your transcripts will be correct, your diplomas may not be...
thanks for that info

haha dont worry i rarely take anything offensively since I, myself say lots of offensive things without meaning too. However, nothing you said seemed rude to me what so ever so its not a problem to begin with =]
The real problem for me is that in Illinois they require complete gender reassignment surgery before changing your name/gender. :(
and thanks =]

They might be required to change the name on the transcripts, but the names you do a lot of the work toward the degree in - the papers, conferences, published stuff, is all but impossible to get changed later.

You should be allowed to change your name regardless. Gender perhaps not, but unless you get an assh*le judge you should not have any problems simply changing your name. Lots of people change their names for lots of reasons [and to nonsensical things like "Rainbow"] Why you want to change your name is your own deal. If they deny your request a lawyer can easily straighten them out, or if you go through a lawyer for the name change you should have no problem as long as you're not looking to legally change your gender at the same time. May not be 100% but at least your degrees would be under the correct name.

My degrees are 20+ yrs old. Both schools had an easy online form to fill out and only one required documentation ie original name change order. Easily changed. Both schools also have replacement diploma ordering, so I am about to order new diplomas. The only thing I can NOT change are my test scores for licensure, so that will haunt me if I ever need new professional licenses. Current states changed name no problem.
But yeah, it would be a heck of a lot easier to do it now if you can.

I was actually curious about that too - i'm about midway through getting my degree and the name change i don't see happening until after i talk to my therapist (still waiting for referral for that one) to see exactly what i have to do in NY and how long it would take. I'm guessing it won't happen until late spring semester or summer unless i'm really lucky.
I'm going to introduce myself to my profs as my chosen name and explain so there's no confusion later on when i DO change it. I know a lot of profs will use "nick names" and will allow you to submit things under those "nick names" - i'm guessing less hassle if i tell them it'll soon be a legal change.
I'm hoping it'll be easy to change at the college once i change legally - i'm guessing different colleges have different requirements....
Thankfully i'm only going for liberal arts and not something that requires state license testing (like vet tech, doctor, etc.)

all but one of mine agreed to change my diplomas, "for a fee" lol
i also want to know what cindy is dancing to.....
ps. with the disclaimer that i am not anyone's lawyer, there is not an attorney-client relationship existent, and that i am not engaged in the practice of law -- i will help anyone navigate their state's requirements for legal name change, and to prepare the petition and orders. just cuz i'm a nice girl ;)

Well, you know, you can change your name anytime you want, even before you start any kind of medical transition. I changed my name twelve years before I decided to proceed with my transition. I was a year away from my college graduation, but I wanted to be sure to get my college diploma, my senior thesis, and all of my future graduate work in my male name. I'm SO glad I did.
