Kinky Boots was pretty good, I'm still pretty fond of Pricillia, Queen of the Desert had an interesting mixture of humor and pathos combined with some of the most spectacular scenic background I've ever seen. The American remake was not nearly as good.

Few 'transgender' - or at least gender shifting - performances are ever going to equal Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. Beyond awesome.

Boys Don't Cry
Myra Breckinridge
To Wong Foo
The Birdcage
Transamerica
Different For Girls
I hope these class as mainstream they all made it to TV or DVD. :P
The only TG film I haven't managed to sit through is 'A Girl Like Me', I lasted about 15mins the first time... it's been a few months now but I still can't build the courage to finish it, it's quite heavy.

His costumes were fru-fru (Keira Knightley's dresses were almost more masculine) , his gestures fey to the point of being camp - beyond camp really, and if they had put any more mascara on his eyes they would have been too heavy to even open. I always liked the review that said Depp had changed "swashbuckler" to "swishbuckler."

:) I think this would be considered mainstream, even tho it was
made for TV (CBS, 1986): Second Serve, about the life of pro
tennis player and ophthalmic surgeon Renee Richards. Vanessa Red-
grave did what I thought was an outstanding job of playing the main
character both as Richard Raskind (called Radley in the movie) and
Renee Richards after transition.
Has anyone seen it?

Bruno (now called The Dress Code) is great.
Better Than Chocolate, mostly a lesbian movie, had a strong TS character played very well by Peter Outerbridge.
Look up other roles he's played you'll be hard pressed to believe it's the same person.

Bruno is a charming little movie with some major acting power to it. I ran it one day at work, and all these macho guys were cheering at the end.
It's a winner.

But you see, TG people are supposed to be all sad, and pathetic, so happy endings don't work.

I do my best to be chipper even when things are not so great.
Sure, I feel a bit down at times, but I'm always looking for a way to create that happy ending
Maybe we should make a TG inspired movie complete with rock shows and all kinds of fun stuff

Thats the movie I saw when I was 12 or 13 and stayed with my parents our of curiosity and horror... I was catatonic, and it something about my mindset and that movie that made the prospect of chemical and social transition that much scarier to me. Maybe its cause I'm used to the actor being effing Cornwallis, and not MtF. DX
I'm not that stupid now, but at 13 I was a product of my environment, no matter how BS I sensed it to be.

At the moment it's a toss up between Switch - I WISH! and XXY which is rather closer to the horrible truth for me.
BUT
My favourite Transgender film hasn't yet been made and that is the one that I wrote as my MA dissertation (and folks this has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the J.Michael Bailey book by the same name)
My film for which I have a professionally edited Script now in it's 6th draft which also already has some coverage (if you are in the film industry you'll know what that means) is entitled "The Man Who Would Be Queen" and it deals with the struggles of someone who has the misfortune to be born both Transgenderd and the heir to the British throne.
If anyone with contacts in the film industry is interested to have a read without prejudice please do PM or email me.
Here is the pitch:

If anyone with contacts in the film industry is interested to have a read without prejudice please do PM or email me.
Here is the pitch:
Quote
Imagine you are heir to the most powerful throne in Europe, but as you have grown up you have become aware of a problem. You are also transgendered. What do you do?
When you are a Royal, have undergone gender surgery, and the establishment are united against you, perhaps your people are the only ones who may save you.
Set in a parallel contemporary world, this is a modern re-telling of the 1936 abdication crisis complete with updated issues for the 21st century. The motivation for the story arose because my maternal grandfather knew Edward 8th personally, and further, whilst growing up I myself suffered from issues of gender identity which happily I was able to resolve before I became an adult. However I wondered what might happen to someone like a royal, who was barred from any solution by their social position.
The story thus follows the dilemma of someone who has two mutually incompatible sides to their being. Both are aspects of their personal truth. Which side should they choose and which sacrifice? Or is there a way for them to have both? And what of the morality of keeping national figureheads locked in gilded cages in which they must sacrifice their humanity for the sake of appearances?
The prince's double life, a shameful secret carefully concealed from his father King James III, is outed in a tabloid newspaper. His father first attempts to cajole him into giving up his lifestyle, then resorts to coercing medical staff to subject Julian to electric shock treatment with the hope of straightening him out. This fails when Julian's mother rescues her child concealing him where he can be treated with more sympathy.
A secret decision is taken to explore gender change. Julian now undergoes meadical treatment to become Julia. She explores her feelings with her psychiatrist, realising that one cannot run away from one's own identity. Both side of her nature, her royalty and crossed gender, are a matter of heredity. Ultimately determined to play out her hand she elects for sex reassignment surgery but, fearing her fathers interference, conspires not to inform him until afterwards.
At first things seem to go to plan. When the king finds out about Julia's change he appears to accept it. However Julia's sister, Helen, disagrees blowing the story to the media before the King and Prime-minister are ready. The stress causes the King to suffer a stroke and brings Julia prematurely to the throne.
A full blown abdication crisis ensues with different factions of the royal family and political establishment battling for the heart and soul of a nation, and indeed the very survival of constitutional monarchy itself as the prime minister calls a referendum.
Julia makes several early errors. An over enthusiastic young PR agent suggests she appear in a Gay pride event, which people hate, and she appears on a television phone in, which backfires horribly with the audience voting to get rid of her.
Isolated and losing ground Julia gains a surprise ally in the form of Jerome, an estranged old school friend and now an injured war hero. She learns fast and the battle turns as the various characters begin to reveal themselves and the people realise that, for all her unconventional behaviour, Julia is compassionate and just to the core with a passion for upholding the rights of her people. A charity rock concert, held in the palace grounds, in aid of war victims also goes down well.
People are unimpressed with Helen's attempts to subvert the succession, the true depths of which are explosively exposed in an edition of the BBC's flagship political program Question Time on the eve of the referendum which will decide of the future of the monarchy. The final result is that the people vote to retain monarchy with Julia as sovereign, thus proving that sometimes the best man for the job is a woman!

1) Soldier's Girl. Lee Pace's portrayal of Calpernia Adams is beyond extraordinary.
2) Normal. Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson star in a very believable tale about a midwestern family's struggle to come to grips with the father's GID.
As for Transamerica, I found it utterly shallow and forgettable.

I wouldn't consider either "Hedwig" or Priscilla to be "mainstream", but they are by FAR my favorite in the genre. "Hedwig..." is my favorite movie of the decade (at least). The stage musical of "La Cage..." is excellent as well.

Loads of really good movies here, so I won't repeat them. One of my favorites is 'Tipping the Velvet', Okay, it's more of a lesbian film than a TG one and more of a 'made for TV serial' than a film. ??? But the two main characters do an awful lot of cross dressing and it is brilliant. I've made my choice and I stand by it :P

I have to agree with a previous poster about disliking RHPS. Same with Hedwig. I personally detest them in a Silence of the Lambs kind of way. Last thing I want is for somebody to equate me with that.
Gotta second the votes for Ma Vie en Rose, Different for Girls, The Crying Game and Better than Chocolate... But that's getting a bit off mainstream. Just watched XXY. Another great one. Can I toss Beautiful Boxer and Iron Ladies in the mix?

I am a really big fan of Cillian Murphy, so I watched the movie more for him than I did for the TG factor. But I ended up really loving it. I wish I could find the book somewhere too. and 'To Wong Foo- Thanks for Everything' was an adorable movie. :)

Not specifically a tg movie, but a good movie...
A dog day afternoon, 1975, based on a true story of John Wojstowicz robbery of the Chase Manhattan bank in 1972, the robbery was committed to pay for his partner Elizabeth Eden's, SRS, which, he succeeded in doing so when sold the rights to the film.

Favourite? I don't think I can call one favourite, maybe important is a better term.
This site and its many members do a very good job in patiently providing information and help on this subject, also by reccomending movies. You have moved me to find some of the movies and so far I have been able to watch "Different for Girls", "A Girl like me" and today "Soldier's Girl". Especially the last mentioned has struck me and left me in some sort of daze. I did not know the ending when I started watching it this afternoon. Normally when watching a movie with a bad ending I am comforted by the idea that it was just a piece born from the directors imagination. But this was no fantasy as proved by the widows website: it happened and still happens.
This movie outrages and saddens. The fake happyness of of movies as "Different for Girls" cannot neutralize the real horror that is written in blood.
Todays questions are once again why people cannot appreciate life in all its diversity, and why I did not see it so clearly untill a person stepped into my life to show me?

The best movie that hasn't been made yet is:
The first 20mins is trans related...going through the change etc etc.... and then the rest of the film is just adventures and normal day to day stuff....yet interesting, but very much typical stuff. Just to show people that being trans is such a small part of our lives and then we move on and live like everyone else.

I really liked The Crying Game... I thought that Jaye Davidson's portrayal of Dil was excellent.
I live in the US, and The Crying Game hadn't been released or marketed extensively here yet when I saw it in . I didn't know anything about it, I just happened to see it at a small artsy theatre that screened import films. So, I saw it knowing nothing of the film, at all... and I thought it was truly extraordinary. I didn't clock Dil as TS at all... until it was revealed in the film.
XXY was the same, I saw it screened at Facets in Chicago, knowing nothing about it. Another wonderful film.
I seem to get the most enjoyment out of films if I know nothing about them beforehand.

Ma Vie En Rose - I loved the imagery in that movie! But more for the fact that it reminded me so much of my childhood. There was a film I watched in the early 80's about a soldier that transitioned can't remember the name of the film, but it stuck in my memory - tried googling for it but could never find it!

But I might change my mind in a couple of weeks.

XXY was fantastic, it's a Brazillian film about an intersex person. Doctors from... I can't remember where, come to their town and try to convince the parents to give the child "corrective surgery". Story is fantastic, but the kid goes through hell...
I liked Transamerica when I first saw it, though the story is kinda off the wall, and I was really disappointed to find out the main actress wasn't even trans. I'm seriously craving more media where transpeople are actually directly involved... Yar, I need to get myself back into film classes.

Has anyone seen the movie "Just one of the guys"?
1980's era flick high school flick starring Joyce Hyser as a girl who dresses as a boy to see what it's like. I think she did a great job and the movie struck me as insightful and realistic (except perhaps the barechest shot of Hyser at the end...)
Near as I can tell, that was Hyser's only movie.

Not a bad movie as far as those types go, but it wasn't really about transgender either, just her wanting to write and that being her means of getting into the competition for working at a paper.
