It was a transition that had been a long time coming. Even as a boy, he knew he preferred playing house with the girls to kicking a football with the boys, but, as a man, he suppressed those feelings and grew a beard to hide behind. It was Gillian who helped him become who he needed to be, he says.
Gillian admits she wrestled with the idea of Mandy formalising her new identity with gender reassignment surgery. ''I had a niggling doubt about whether I really wanted her to go through with it.
